HD home Network dual tuner for HDTV MAC and PC
This review is from : Elgato HDHomeRun Network Dual Tuner for HDTV for Mac or PC (10023030)
Solid HDHomerun + Solid EyeTV software . This is an excellent product for having two accessed from multiple devices on your network at the same time.
In the box you receive.
- HDHomeRun device w/ power adapter.
- Coax cable
- Ethernet Cable
- Elgato eyeTv 3 CD-ROM
- License card (with 2 license keys)
- Quick Start Manual
Setup is very easy. You unpack the device, hook the power up, hook the source up (coax/antenna/etc), and hook it up to your network. Then install the software on your mac. eyeTv then guides you through locating your device, setting up the software, tuning the channels, etc.
The HDHomeRun on it's own is a great product, and can be bought for cheaper on it's own. However, you won't get the two copies of eyeTv that you need to use on a mac. If you have a Windows Media Center Edition (I think?), XBMC, or a few other pieces of software, you can use this without using eyeTv software, and you would then purchase the cheaper stand alone product.
However if you have a Mac, this package is the way to go. The eyeTv software is excellent. Allows easy recording, encoding (for playing on iPhone/iPad/Apple TV/etc), and works incredibly well. It's a stark contrast to most third party windows clients that don't seem well thought up, and a lot of times are just a pain to deal with.
You can also play live tv (requires Core 2 Duo mac, or the elgato Turbo .264 HD) on your iPad/iPhone, and recorded tv as well. The catch is that you have to have a computer with the eyeTv software running on it to do this. There is XBMC for iPad, which can connect directly to it, however since it is uncompressed, over wifi it means a lot of stuttering.
Using this on my ~2006 iMac worked very well, and worked even better on my wife's ~2010 MacBook Pro. It's nice to be able to open up and use it on either computer without having to move a hardware tv tuner. It's also especially nice on a laptop because you don't have a dongle and antenna hanging off the laptop.
I'd recommend this product over any of the other elgato tuners, unless you need a product that can take in video (composite, etc) which the HDHomeRun cannot do. It records/views super easy, and since there are two tuners you can record one and watch another.
Edit: I failed to mention that this little box has TWO tv tuners in it. On my iMac eyeTV will even record two shows at once. Don't have recording setup on the other computer, so not sure if it can do one in each place, but it should be able to. This is also the updated version of the HDHomeRun hardware, the only differences I could find online were that this box is smaller and better looking, and instead of two antenna/cable connectors, there is just one for both tuners.
Elgato HDHomeRun Network Dual Tuner for HDTV for Mac or PC (10023030) Reviews
Awesomeness!! . Elgato HDHomeRun Network Dual Tuner for HDTV for Mac or PC
Cut off my Comcast cable TV that we only used to record our weekly shows that are available over the ATSC airwaves for free. Put the HDHomeRun on the network, installed EyeTV on our iMac and started recording all of our shows, I have it set to automatically export an h.264 AppleTV formatted copy to my iTunes library when recording is complete, so all we have to do is flip to my library on the AppleTV and bam save $150 a month!
I also installed the EyeTV app on my iPhone and my daughters iPod from the App store and we can watch live tv or the recorded shows from anywhere we have an internet connection (even 3g) utilizing the free "My EyeTV service"!
Elgato HDHomeRun Network Dual Tuner for HDTV for Mac or PC (10023030) Opinions
Best free tv ever! . Using comcast internet, so getting the weird free cable channels. All the basic channels are there, plus some extras, including local radio stations! Very cool
Elgato HDHomerum great product . This is a great product. Set up and running on 2 macs in about 20 minutes. Great picture quality, easy to use.
Goodbye to pay TV . The set up was easy as pie. Very sensitive receiver brought in more channels (with a Winegard SS3000) than I had expected for my rural setting. The software is intuitive and stable, very good picture and sound quality. The guide is easy to use and the iPhone app makes recording a series very easy. Five stars if they had provided more information on using a remote control. For that purpose, there is good support information on the El Gato website. You just have to hunt for it a bit. My set up is a Mac Mini with and HDMI output via a Marantz pre amp to a Sharp projector. I'll never miss DirecTV (and the $80/month fee).
Good product no major flaws . I have a hard time finding any fault with the homerun tuner or the eyetv software. The tuner is as sensitive as any modern tv, but is does tend to run a little warm when the tuners are in use. The eyetv software is elegant and stable. The only drawback so far, you can not record on both tuners in the manual record mode, it is possible if you use the program guide to schedule simultaneous shows.Relying on over the air guide data can be a little wonky at times. The option to convert recordings to ipad, iphone etc is handy and makes very good looking files, but on my july 2011 model mac mini it takes forever and causes the mac's built in fan to spin up to a level I didn't know it was capable of, I'm a little concerned that continued use would lead to my macs early demise?
works as specified . Turns any computer into a TV screen and records shows. Picture quality excellent. it completely works as specified is reliable and good software.
The only weirdness is the TV screen jumps ok and I've no idea why.
Great device - but be sure your Wi-Fi is top notch . I like this device overall. It has worked well for me. Just know that it passes the digital stream *directly* into the network, with no compression. If the network is wireless (i.e. Wi-Fi), it can be easily overwhelmed and produce chops and delays in the resulting video.
Great Solution for DVR on Mac . This Tuner works very well for getting a TV signal to multiple Macs. The software is mostly elegant, and includes an automated workflow to move shows from the EyeTV software to your iTunes library (and by extension the Apple TV). The quality is great as long as the bandwidth holds up. HD content uses about 1.9MB/sec, SD about 600KB/sec. On an 802.11n, with the computer in close proximity to the router, things work great, though obviously it would be better if wired. The companion eyeTV software for iPad & iPhone is also excellent and overall this is a neat way to convert one ClearQAM or OTA signal for digital television to something that can be captured by any computer or i-device on your home network. Believe it or not, the eyeTV iPhone & iPad app will even let you stream your home TV signal to your phone or iPad ANYWHERE (even on 3G). Block and compressed, sure, but it does work!
Cons Review Limited cable channels available . I am sure this is a fabulous device for people using an antenna or who are happy with limited cable channel availability. For this group, this is a 5-Star device. What was not clear to me when I purchased the HDHomeRun is that the device only receives unencrypted cable channels, which turns out to be a fraction of the available cable channels available on your TV through your cable box. This website will let you see what channels are available for the HDHomeRun in your area [...] The following is taken from the Elgato web site and explains why this device receives a limited selection of channel choices.
HDHomeRun (2011, Dual) has two tuners, and can receive either Digital Antenna (ATSC) or unencrypted DigitalCable (Clear QAM).
Digital cable service typically is made up of a few different types of signals, all on the same cable line:
1) Unscrambled analog cable - "Basic Cable" is what many people are familiar with, offering up to 125 channels of standard definition analog content. Analog services are being phased out.
2) Scrambled analog cable - "Premium Cable" includes channels like HBO, that can't be viewed without a cable box. No EyeTV product can receive premium analog cable directly. Analog services are being phased out.
3) Unencrypted digital cable - "Clear QAM" is similar to basic cable, but in digital form. The channels are not scrambled or blocked, but only a small number of channels are available for viewing. Some channels may be SDTV (standard), and some may be HDTV (high definition). Typically, networks like NBC or FOX will be present, along with public access, shopping, local, PBS, and perhaps some radio channels.
4) Encrypted digital cable - "Digital Cable" is typically encrypted, or encoded so that you need a cable box (or CableCARD) to view it. If you have 500 digital cable channels that you receive with a cable box, then the majority of these channels will be encrypted. A Clear QAM tuner can't receive encrypted digital cable; HDHomeRun (2011, Dual) can't receive the majority of your digital cable channels.
Therefore, HDHomeRun (2011, Dual) only receives a few cable channels, those that are Clear QAM (unencrypted). It cannot use a cable box, and it can't receive most of your channels. The channels it can receive vary city by city, and some channels may be there one day, and gone in a few months. Essentially, your cable company reserves the right to encrypt and decrypt channels at will, but usually you'll see the networks, and some other content.
To find out what Clear QAM channels may be available in your area, please use this website:
[...]
That said, Clear QAM tuners can receive HDTV content, if available. For example, ABC may start airing HDTV content at 8PM nightly. That may be 720p or 1080i, depending on the channel.
Clear QAM also sometimes offers more than one channel on the same frequency. In that case, EyeTV can open up all channels on the same frequency, at the same time (or any combination of channels on that frequency).
If you use digital cable, please be aware of the strengths and limitations of Clear QAM tuners before purchasing HDHomeRun (2011, Dual). You may want to contact your cable company, to find out if any of their channels are in Clear QAM format. You can also search the internet for such information - it's common to find an article or message board post from people in your same city who are already using Clear QAM content. Unfortunately, no master list of Clear QAM service providers is available to Elgato.
If your goal is to receive all of the channels that your Cable Box can get, including HDTV, then please consider EyeTV HD hardware.
