This review is from : eSata / Sata / IDE PCI RAID Controller Card VIA VT6421A Chip Set
Inexpensive and it delivers . There are a lot of negative reviews about this product out there, and yes, most of their gripes are valid. This card won't support 300G transfers, and it won't be detected before booting the OS, so you can't use it for a system drive. But it does everything it promises: supplies you with a SATA RAID controller, and even an extra IDE bus.
The long and the short of it is - a hard drive can barely keep up with the 150G transfer rate of the protocol version this uses, so unless you're using solid state storage, that gripe doesn't count. If you just want to add more storage to your existing computer, or just want to add SATA to a non-SATA computer, this works like a charm. Setup was easy, it worked right out of the box. I highly recommend it.
Some background on me - I have two electrical engineering degrees, and have worked in IT off and for the last 20 years. In my opinion, this is a good product for the money.

No problem with it . My cheap SATA card I got from eBay died, so I decided to buy another one with some assurance (Amazon reviews). Put the card in, Ubuntu 8.0.4 Server recognized it fine. Hookup my Seagate 1.5TB and it's working fine so far. I didn't test speed or anything, I just know I was able to read/write to that the 1.5TB drive w/ this SATA and so far it's working fine (~1 month). I'll update if this card ever give me trouble.
eSata / Sata / IDE PCI RAID Controller Card VIA VT6421A Chip Set Opinions
card works - after os loads . SATA card works in XEON XP system - after boot - I was hoping it would work off BIOS so I could Ghost system to SATA instead of problematic IDE. It works well after boot using a driver.
Just plug it in and it works. . Great little SATA/e-SATA card. I just plugged into the PCI slot on my old XP system and it works. Just a note: As was mentioned in other posts, only two ports work at a time; either the two internal SATA ports, or one SATA and one e-SATA. Still, a good little card for the price.
great for compatibility . The reason I got this one was because I had a few devices that weren't compatible with the integrated controller on my PC. I have yet to plug anything into this product with which it wouldn't interface.
Works well . Arrived quickly and it works. Came with a cable, which was nice, so I didn't have to buy it separately.

My computer didn't seem to recognize it at first, but after a couple reboots, it did.
Great combo card . This PCI card provides an upgrade path for older PC's without SATA support. It allows you to configure the SATA ports for internal or external use (with limits). Works fine under Windows control, but no onboard BIOS so the usefulness at boot time is more limited. Although I had no need for an extra IDE connection, the board also includes one IDE socket.
Must buy for PC's lacking sata ports. . This controller card works beautifully on a lot of Sata devices, I have since used it for a hard drive, and 2 DVD drives and both were recognized perfectly on Windows XP SP2. Very cheap yet good quality. Recommend definitely especially for older pc's lacking Sata ports. Buy it.
Awesome inexpensive RAID solution . I have this card installed on an E-machine running XP for the past week, as a RAID-1 mirror configuration. It is controlling two W.D. 640GB SATA drives and has eased my mind about loosing important data! with this inexpensive investment (one raid card, cables, power adapter and two sata drives) I can back up my three machines and also store my CCTV video. set up was easy, if you buy OEM drives make sure you have the necessary hard drive jumpers to slow down the hard drives (1.5gb transfer rate instead of the 3gb they run at) western digital has literature to show the jumper settings. I had the jumpers and i bought everything else hear at Amazon. i shopped around and I found the parts at amozon were the best price and value other sites were crooked!

Cons Review
Didn't work well at all for eSTATA Hard Drive . Bought this card specifically for doing system backups to an external hard drive. I can't attest to how well the internal SATA or IDE ports work. Installation went OK, Win7 correctly identified it and automatically downloaded drivers for it from Windows update. So I thought "Hey great, no need to fool with the mini CD driver disk labeled SUTUP SOFTWARE (sic)". I was averaging about 25-30 Mb per second transfers on the external hard drive via USB 2.0, and expected to multiply that by at least 2-3 times. But sadly, this card's eSATA port would jump off the starting block at about 75 Mb per second, then very quickly slow down to 50, then 25 then 10 and within 30 seconds transfer rates were down to 2-3 Mb per second. I benchmarked the drive using this card's eSATA port with no less than 6 different hard drive benchmark utilities, and every single one of them timed out (program not responding), due to bottlenecked inability to access and test the drive. I thought maybe the Win7 obtained driver was a possible culprit so I used the SUTUP SOFTWARE (sic) mini CD and it had NO DRIVERS for OS newer than XP on it, and all it did was install a startup RAID Tool that I didn't want or need and had trouble getting rid of (wouldn't uninstall through Control Panel - had to do it the brute force way). Then I searched the web and found a Vista driver for it that I also tried - it had a newer date by one month than the Win7 driver, but it was much worse - the whole OS bogged down with it in use and it took almost FIVE MINUTES for the external hard drive to even be recognized. I re-installed the original Win7 drivers and did one last eval on it. No dice. Ten minutes after commanding a 4 Gb file to be copied to the external drive, less than 2 Gb was transferred and the transfer rate was down to 2 Mb per second. What was I thinking expecting more from a $17 card? Didn't work for me.

Caution: Only Wireless N ! . I can't use this device, because it is only wireless N. I'll need to replace my router to use it. So it will sit dormant until I decide (for reasons other than this application) that the router needs to be replaced.

So the purpose of this review is simply to warn other potential buyers that it is only N capable.

This review is from : TRENDnet 108Mbps 802.11G MIMO Wireless PCI Adapter
TRENDnet seems to be a good brand . I have had no problems with this wireless PCI Card. I bought it to replace a Linksys that did not have MIMO technology and I am very impressed with it's performance so far.

Cons Review
Good hardware bad software . After owning and tinkering with this for a while, I've found the hardware to be a good performer and that it works well IF you follow the right procedure to install it.

The supplied trendnet software is old (over a year as of this writing) and the one more recent update to the driver is not functional.

It appears that the software that comes with the product as I received it is the older 1.0.0.56 driver, which is microsoft WHQL certified. It appears that this driver does NOT support the WPA2 encryption method, as stated in the products marketing documentation. a newer driver (1.1.0.22) is posted on their web site and shows WPA2 support as its primary feature.

I've tried many configurations of both drivers with and without the trendnet supplied client configuration/monitoring/tray icon software. I get frequent windows blue screens (driver faults) with the WPA2 driver, windows explorer crashes and boot delays with the trendnet software.

I have had success in removing all traces of the trendnet software (if you installed any yet), download and unzip the 1.0.0.56 package from the trendnet web site to a directory, installing the card, and when windows boots and asks for it, telling it you do NOT want it to find the software itself and that you 'have disk', point it to the \driver subdirectory you created by unzipping the trendnet files, and using the windows networking configuration tools to configure your wireless connection including the security bits.

If you want WPA2, do not buy this card.

Under the trendnet and windows tools, I get three out of four bars of signal, which is less than my two laptops (dell 1390 equipped e1705 and intel centrino pentium M toshiba) but my actual download throughput is up to 20% higher with the trendnet card, so the MIMO/802.11g turbo capabilities are apparently providing some benefit, even though the reported signal strength isnt as good.

Do note also that i'm using this with a trendnet MIMO router that uses the same Atheros chip set. It may or may not work better or worse with routers that employ other chip sets, that do or dont have MIMO, or that do or do not employ a compatible 802.11g 'turbo' mode. Seems on reading reviews that some people enjoy less success with non atheros based routers but that may be just because they made the mistake of installing the trendnet software.

A parting shot, its fairly lame to release a product and then have the only update for the buggy software in over a year take the form of an uncertified, even more buggy driver...just so you can say you have a particular checkbox feature.

Feature TRENDnet 108Mbps 802.11G MIMO Wireless PCI Adapter

  • Supports Ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) mode or infrastructure (AP-Client) mode
  • Supports Super G technology with Data Rate up to 108 Mpbs (8x faster)
  • Enhanced MIMO wireless coverage -- up to 800% more
  • Dynamic Data Rate Scaling at 11, 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps for 802.11b
  • Dynamic Data Rate Scaling at 52, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9, and 6 Mbps for 802.11g

This review is from : StarTech.com PCI Express to PCI Adapter Card (PEX1PCI1)
Works as described . We are using this adapter to install ISDN adapters in rack servers that only have PCIe slots.
It works ok for what it is intended for, with no additonal drivers or whatsoever (at least under Linux). If you can live with the mechanics and the limitation to Low Profile cards, this device can provide a solution for you.

There are also external boxes where you can connect multiple PCI cards, but these are much more expensive, and have the disadvantage of "another box" and cabling.

So, zero stars to the server vendors who provide no solution to continue to use PCI cards,
and four stars to StarTech for providing a workaround.
StarTech.com PCI Express to PCI Adapter Card (PEX1PCI1) Reviews
May work for you depends on your situation. . I do not write reviews very often. I felt compelled to write one for the PEX1PCI1 in hopes it will help others.

Background:

I purchased the PEX1PCI1 to overcome my motherboard's limited PCI slot issue. Most motherboard manufacturers are slowly phasing out PCI slots and adding PCIe slots. My ASROck H67M motherboard only has one PCI slot. The PCI slot is populated with my Promise SATA controller card to control 4 of the 5 hard drives in my software Raid-5. I also wanted to use my Audigy 2 ZS sound card. In comes PEX1PCI1 from stage right to possibly fix my problem. The computer I am using the PEX1PCI1 in runs Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit.

Problem:

Based upon another review mentioning the PEX1PCI1 working in Linux, I decide to buy this and give it a go. I did realized the PEX1PCI1 is low profile and did not have a problem with that for what I was doing. I used this in my Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit computer. My problem came about when trying to use the PEX1PCI1 card with the Audigy 2 ZS in it AND the Promise SATA controller card in the PCI slot on the ASROCK H67M. I am not sure what was conflicting, but the sound card was not being recognized. The PEX1PCI1 was being recognized, but not the Audigy 2 ZS that was in it.

Here is the kicker: if I unplugged the 5th hard drive of the Raid-5 array (which was plugged into the H67M's SATA connector) the sound card would be recognized and work perfectly. Of course this meant I could no longer access my files which I wanted to use. I powered down my pc and reconnected the 5th raid hard drive to the H67M's SATA connector. I powered the pc on once again, what do you know the raid is seen and the sound card is no longer functioning. For kicks and giggles, I switched the Promise SATA controller card into the PEX1PCI1 and the Audigy 2 ZS into the motherboard's PCI slot. I powered on my pc and it had no video coming from the video card. My dream of using both the Promise SATA controller card and my sound card came crashing down. Obviously something "wonky" was happening. Yes, "wonky" is a very technical term :D

Other Thoughts & Findings:

I contacted StarTech's technical support and told them my situation. StarTech was quick to give me a response of:

"Thank you for your inquiry! We are sorry to hear about your technical difficulty.
It sounds like there may be a conflict between the PEX1PCI1 and something with your PC.
First, if possible attempt to install the PEX1PCI1 into a different Windows based PC to test if the PEX1PCI1 is functional.
If the card functions in the different PC the drivers for devices on the original PC such as video card, bios etc. may need to be updated.
If the card does not function with the original PC please navigate to the link below to begin the exchange process."

Per their request, I did test the PEX1PCI1 in a Windows pc (Windows 7 64-bit) and it worked as it should of. The Audigy 2 ZS sound card was recognized. Super awesome fun time! Heck it does me no good if it works, but not 100% in the pc I needed it to. Another thing to note is I didn't have space to put my Promise SATA controller card in the Windows pc. I am not sure if that would of effected the results. The StarTech response was not what I was looking for, but did help me come to a conclusion.

Conclusion:

I will go out on a limb and say if your using the PEX1PCI1 for a Windows pc you "should" have no issues. The PEX1PCI1 in a Linux pc "could" or "may" work for you, but depends if the motherboard chipset will play nice. For example, if the motherboard's chipset controlling the PCI/PCIe slots will play nice with the PEX1PCI1 and whatever you have populating the PCI/PCIe slots. The cheapest non-creative labs sound card with SPDIF output which is fully supported in Linux is anywhere from $90+ to $180+. I am in the process of RMAing this back to Amazon for a refund. I hope this review is helpful in some way. I wish the StarTech PEX1PCI1 would of worked for me. $35 for the PEX1PCI1 is a paltry sum compared to replacing a $200 sound card. Hopefully it can work for you for your situation.
StarTech.com PCI Express to PCI Adapter Card (PEX1PCI1) Opinions
Perfect but fragile . I've been using one of these for 6 months now with a low profile digital TV tuner.

While it is a given that this will only hold a low profile card it does it flawlessly. Just plug it into the pci-e slot, plug in the power cord and install your low profile pci card. No drivers, no software, no problems. Perfect.

My reason for not giving 5 stars was I had to return the first one I received because an electronic part (a choke) was broken off, hanging by its wires. But it still worked! I could have glued the choke back on with super glue but decided to return it for a replacement, which arrive intact.

I just purchased another one. I am adding another TV tuner to my second pci-e slot.
Works great in Windows XP and 7 but... . I ordered 2 of these adapters because I wanted to use an old SCSI PCI card and a Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS in motherboard which has no PCI slots. I was skeptical at first because many interface adapters I've used in the past "partly" work at best. I was pretty worried when I opened the boxes for these adapters and neither had a driver disk.

However, I simply plugged the adapters in with the two PCI cards and the PCI cards were detected and installed flawlessly. It's been alittle over a month since I started using them and I've encountered no problems. I will note that if your PCI cards are not "low profile" You WILL need to cut away part of your case if there are multiple ports on the back of the PCI card. I used tinsnips to do this but a dremel would also work.

Overall for windows XP/7 they work great, but the physical attributes of this adapter are clumsy. Just make sure you have a big enough case for this adapter before order. I didn't measure it exactly but I'd eyeball this adapter at raising the PCI card 1.5 to 2.0 inches away from the motherboard.
this thing ROCKS! . I have a couple of PCI items I can't live without, and as we all know, PCI is nearly gone... this saved me. The computer doesn't even seem to know its there (no drivers) it just sees the PCI card with no issues through the PCIe slot. The chassis has to be a little larger than normal because it makes your PCI card an inch taller. But I've had no problems.

Cons Review
Be Sure It'll Handle Your Situation . The key word in the description is "low profile" but what it means practically is this adapter can only handle PCI cards such as ethernet adapters requiring limited space in certain sized cabinets.

I was unable to fit an Audigy sound card in an HP Pavilion desktop without cutting away chunks of the cabinet that I'm sure would have voided my warranty. On an older machine I might have gotten out the metal snips so, if you're so inclined, perhaps this will work for you.

It's really a shame because, although I'm no hardware engineer, the problem in this case doesn't seem that complicated - attach the PCIe male on a bendable cable or some kind of bracket so as not to force the PCI card so far out of alignment with the cabinet. In the worst case, allow the PCI card to mount completely inside the case and let me run the connectors through the slot opening using a makeshift dust shield.

Even if the end result is using up the space of two PCIe slots to accomodate one PCI card, I'm sure a lot of users would consider it an acceptable interim solution for the price until they eventually shell out more for PCIe cards - which are still not ubiquitous for all applications nor have full Win 7 support.

Fortunately Amazon's return policy is very fair and I can return it.

This review is from : New 150mbps Wifi USB Wireless LAN Adapter 802.11 B/g/n
Fast inexpensive and easy of use . I was little skeptical when I ordered this USB WIFI adapter. I saw many reviews of other adapters that drop signals. I never heard about its brand. It came in a small box and was wrapped with protective plastic wrapper. A mini CD was also in the box. I inserted it to the USB slot on the back of my PC and attached the antenna to it. After I started my PC, I saw that the wireless icon indicated five bars, a good sign of signal strength. Then, I input the security key and launched my Firefox. Ban, my Yahoo homepage was displayed immediately! It took me about two minutes to see the internet page from installation of the adapter. I did not even bother to install the driver in the CD. My internet connection is definitely faster than my old NETGEAR PCI adapter (WT311). I am very pleased with this adapter.
GREAT . It was perfect! I Bought it for my xbox 360 but it didn't work! So I use it for my desktop Perofect!!!! Torrents download at 10 MB/s!!!!!

Cons Review

This review is from : PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan
Confused About Why People Talk of Problems? . I have Windows Vista 64 bit and I find I am rather puzzled why people left so much negativity in regards to this product. It works perfect for me. I had no issue whatsoever in installing, and there was no "Engrish" in the instructions. I bought this so my son could use the WiFi for his Nintendo Dsi and, as I stated, it does the job just fine. Very pleased with my purchase.
PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan Reviews
Exceeds expectations . Plugged into on Windows 7 64-bit and the driver got installed automatically.
Although the driver reported itself working it actually didn't until I rebooted. No big deal.
I knew it'll be about 6 times faster than my old D-link G, what I didn't expect is that now I get "very strong" reception as before it was "very weak".
Same location, same network and although it is very tiny, it still has a better antenna and radio.

I haven't even tired using it as an access point...
What?... Access Point?... Really?...
PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan Opinions
Works very well . I bought this for my Asus computer since the built in wireless is having all types of issues (common with this model, but otherwise a great laptop).

This has been a great solution for wireless coverage. Works very well and is small enough that I don't worry about it getting tore off and breaking.

I highly recommend this for anyone needing a usb wi-fi interface.
Great adapter . This is a great wireless N adapter. Easy to setup and connect to the top 150 Mbps speed as described.
Working with Asus 1005HAB with Mac OSX 10.6.4 . Installed the MacOS 10.6 driver using the included CDROM with an external USB reader/writer connecyed to my netbook. Inserted Planex WiFi device into USB slot. It worked with my Linksys wireless N router. 'Nuff said.
Not working with 64-bit Win7 Home Premium SP1 . This was the first Wireless-N adapter I bought (after buying my first N-band router, a Vizio). It worked great in a 32-bit Vista desktop (HP Compaq) and a 64-bit Win7 Home Premium laptop (Gateway). It had good range, speed and reliability in both machines. However, I just finished building a new desktop with 64-bit Win7 Home Premium, SP1, and as of June 30, 2011 the Planex drivers aren't working.

Here's the play-by-play on my new computer: After installing the driver from the disc that came with the adapter, I got an error message saying the driver wasn't compatible with my 64-bit OS (I thought this was strange because I didn't get that message when I installed the same driver on my Win7 laptop.) So I downloaded the latest driver from the Planex website (v1.1.0.1) and installed it. I promptly got another error message saying I needed to uninstall the old driver first (shouldn't Setup do that automatically in a well-written program?) So I followed the instructions and uninstalled the old driver, then reinstalled the new driver. I promptly got another error message (my third) saying I had to manually install the new driver because Setup couldn't do it automatically in a 64-bit environment. So I followed the instructions again, and now I no longer have a yellow exclamation point beside the adapter in Device Manager, but the Network & Sharing Center reports no wireless networks are available. I suspect the issue is somehow related to my having Service Pack 1 installed, but I can't be certain. So I'm going to have to relegate this adapter to one of my older computers and buy another one that comes with fully functional 64-bit Win7 SP1 compatible drivers. (Oh, and yes there was a bit of Japlish in the on-screen directions.)

BTW, here's my plea for all the Win7 users who review this adapter in the future: Please state your version of Win7 (Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate, 32 or 64 bit, Service Pack) and the version of the driver you're using. Without these details, any review (pro or con) is incomplete. Thank you, and good luck with your Planex product!

Cons Review
Good Hardware- TERRIBLE SOFTWARE - IF 64-BIT Vista - DO NOT BUY . I needed a replacement WiFi adapter for my "daily driver" laptop when the built-in WiFi gave up the ghost. I chose this one over a couple other "mini" USB versions because of good reviews and limited availability of the others- bad choice.

This might be an OK device for use with 32-bit systems, I don't know. I will tell you for 64-bit Vista it is an utter EPIC FAIL. A disaster of the highest magnitude. First - the automated installation routine does not work at all for 64-bit machines. You have to search for the website (it's listed nowhere in any of the printed documentation that comes with the device). Next, manually download, unzip, and install the new set-up routine. Then manually install (using DEVICE MANAGER - remember that dinosaur? )the 64-bit device driver But OOPS... the documentation is all very poorly translated Japanglish, as is the software interface you will have to deal with forever once the device is installed. And OOPS... the listed location of the driver (x86 Programs\ doesn't exist. So expect to go on a fishing expedition to find the drivers.

Once the drivers are installed, now you can proceed with the client software installation. As far as I can tell, there's no way to make the device work without this clunky, Japanglish , almost comical software. I tried several times to make it work without the third-party software but forget it. After two hours of fooling around - trial and error - finally got the adapter to connect to my wireless router (sitting 10' away).

Now that it's running- the speed is just "OK" - and worst of all - this thing really sucks the battery life. It also makes the CPU work for its supper- my whole laptop gets too hot to touch pretty quickly,

Conclusion - I think the 64-bit drivers were a total afterthought. Poorly written and executed. The client software is equally terrible and with Vista at least there's no way around using it. Win7 might be better but I'm not going to test it to find out.

To leave you on a positive note:
The actual hardware is nice. I do love the tiny size of this thing, so I'll keep this around for use with my older 32-bit computers. But for the 64-bit laptops, I'll be purchasing something else ASAP.
DONT BUY PLANEX LIED TO ME . Planex claimed that it would work with an ipod touch. when i recieved my item it took forever to set up on my windows 7 64 bit laptop. then it only wanted to use the device as wireless adaptor in replace of the built in wireless on my computer. i contacted planex and they took again forever to respond. they told me that they dont lie and were very cocking over email about this. there company does not value their customers after hearing what they had to say to me. They should not have told me that it worked with certian devices if they in reality do not. I want a refund of my 20 bucks after being lied to. they said that i have 30 days for my refund. but the wait a week to replay to the 10 emails back and forth. therefore it is not my fault it has taken so long to write this review. I AM VERY UNPLEASED WITH THE QUILITY AND THERE CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO NOT BUY FROM PLANEX OR ASK THEM QUESTIONS, YOU WILL BE LIED TO!! again i wou;d like a full refund due to this

This review is from : TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black)
Small Package with Lots of speed - if it works! . We recently bought 2 of these for system upgrades for our personal computers.

The units are pretty compact - only slightly bigger than the old wired antennae for our old PCI G-band cards. The software installed quickly and easily in Windows 7 Home Premium. I really like the detail in the Trendnet application software showing the connection speed (initially was >350Mbps with router about a room and a half away). I was online in <10 minutes.

On the next computer, 2nd unit turned on, but didn't detect any wireless networks. After about a half-hour of troubleshooting - swapped the 1st with the 2nd and found the 2nd to be DOA. We went to an electronics store to pick-up a new one to replace the dead unit. That one worked great.

So to conclude - 2 working great, 1 DOA.
TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black) Reviews
Great Speed & Range - this is the one to get! . Having used the Netgear WNDA3100 and the Cisco AE1000 adapters previously this adapter beats them handsdown.
Neither of the previous adapters could maintain near the 300Mbps advertised, they would typically fluctuate between 54 & 150 Mbps (maybe hitting about 200Mpbs on 5mHz channel), but never holding a constant signal. The TrandNet holds 450Mbsp constantly. I am using the Cisco E4200 router (it also performed well on a Neatgear n750 router).
Range and signal reception are both FAR better than either of the mentioned USB thumb-tpye adapters.
This is the way to go if you need a high speed network connection for streaming or gaming and have a router that supports 450Mbps.
TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black) Opinions
Increased Down/Upload speeds. Very Small! . I was surprised at how small this adapter was based on the picture. I am using this with the Cisco-Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router.

Initially after getting the Linksys E4200 router I kept my old G wireless adapter. The download/upload speeds didn't change at all. I decided to upgrade to a new 450mbps adapter so I ordered this.

When installing the drivers install the whole Trendnet utility. The first time I just installed the drivers and my connection speed was only at 150mbps. I uninstalled and re-installed with the utility and my speeds are at 450mpbs.

Before installing this adapter my download/upload speeds were at 6mb/1mb. After installing this adapter, paired with my Linksys E4200 I am 26mb/1mb.
Awesome 450mbps transmit 405mbps receive . I have this adapter connected to a Cisco-Linksys E4200 and getting 450Mbps sustained transmit and peak 405mbps receive connection to my pc (Windows 7). The pc and router are in the same room.

When I connect the adapter to my netbook (Windows 7) in the other end of my house, separated by a few very dense walls, sustained connection of 130Mbps.

The software installer will give the option to install the "drivers only" or "software & drivers".

The drivers only option would not allow the adapter to function, you need to install the software & drivers.

Luckily this option does not install some junk 3rd party software that supersedes the Windows 7 wireless configuration utility, they work together.

The software provides more options for the adapter and connection speed info.

BTW Amazon is not the lowest price, B&H
GREAT LITTLE ADAPTER . Great, Wish I had gotten this earlier, easy install, no problems, I recommend this product highly. Lowest price from Amazon. I always look at Amazon for low prices.
Awesome Product. . Customers who have tried this product can not beleive the amount of spped they get out of it. Whatever the speed of your modem is it will run at that. It is good for 100 meters indoors and 200 meters if you happen to be outdoors. It definately make a two story building easier, faster access to high spped internet connections
Great little device . Quite easy and intuitive install. Real speed is ~56 Mb/sec in a distance of 3m (10 feet) through two walls. This allows to stream DVD9 iso wirelessly from a different computer in a house.
If you need it to work in 5GHz mode only, installation of a utility is a must, luckily the utility is really small and doesn't seem to have bad memory and system productivity footprint.
However, I give it only four stars because of a high price. Technically I don't have any complains.
Works like a charm on Win7 640bit i7 processor! . Purchased a new desktop with Win7 64-bit ULTIMATE - my old adapter left a lot to be desired - couldn't keep up and after trying the latest NETGEAR device - THAT DID NOT WORK - I read lots of reviews and it was between this one and a Cisco Lynksis -- this took less than 5 minutes to install and my upload AND download speeds are improved. Live in the country and have to use a Sprint 3G Sierra Overdrive for all connections (amazingly better than our 9 years with Hughes.net satellite service!)and this TrendNet adapter fits the bill! LOVE IT

Cons Review
A Big Disappointment . The purpose of a cutting-edge dual-band (and simultaneous at that!) multi-stream adapter such as this is to allow you to create a modern wireless environment using the newest 2 and 3 stream dual-band wireless routers. In practical terms, the 2.4GHz radio band really only has 3 clear channels to choose from so unless you live in a rural area the likelihood of getting more that one channel to bind together to get the multi-stream link speeds advertised by the manufacturers is nil. So, you set up your new multi-band multi-stream router to use one channel of the 2.4GHz band (if you can find a clear one) just for legacy G and single stream N purposes (your smart phone, older laptops, etc). Then you set up the spacious 5GHz band with as many streams and 40Mhz channels as your router will let you claim. Your new laptop probably already has a multi-stream card that can sit on the 5GHz radio band. This TEW-684UB adapter would theoretically be the perfect add-on to a desktop PC in an awkward location for running Ethernet cable. And with simulcast radios you can use the 5GHz for your main connectivity and the 2.4GHz band for monitoring the rest of your network with free software such as InSSIDer. I read the mixed reviews of this device and as usual I thought I would be smart enough to make it work to my satisfaction. My conclusion, however, is that either there is a huge variability in the quality of the adapters, or perhaps they only work well with the same brand chipset on the routers, or the praising reviews here are confusing link speed with actual throughput. Do not trust any review that does not include a speed test (from various websites) comparing the speed of connecting your PC to the Ethernet port of the router with a test using the wireless interface. The link speed your computer reports is of little real significance. The actual throughput relative to a known quantity (your Ethernet connection to the router and onward to the Internet verified by a speed test site) is all that is important. The difference will show you your true wireless speed. And therein lies my extreme disappointment. I should have known something was going to go bad when the setup program had extreme difficulty installing the drivers and the utility under Windows 7-64bit. After installation, the adapter would ignore the enable device function in Windows and the utility did not even list the 5GHz band as even existing. Note the utility, though not strictly required, is the only way to manipulate the radios used and does provide some useful functionality such as listing the local networks in your area and some dBm signal strength meters. I was finally able to to get it installed by using the old workaround of using the compatibility mode and telling the installer (the second setup.exe) that I really have Win XP. Do we really still need to do that in 2011? The next clue that this was more toy than tool is that the profiles that can be set with the utility only allow WEP for the encryption. Puleeze! 802.11n requires WPA2 minimally. Not really a problem since everyone uses Windows itself to control wireless these days and the Windows profile worked fine. The claimed typical output power and receive sensitivity listed on the box are simply bogus (by about 3 times). In my environment (using a cable modem) I get between 24-25Mbps download througput with a 1GB Ethernet connection. On a laptop using an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 card set to 5GHz priority I get 18-20Mbps download throughput with clear line-of-site across an average size living room (no walls). With TEW-684UB at the same location, the 5GHz a/n mode will get me around 0.3-0.5Mbps download and on the regular single stream 2.4GHz g/n mode I get up to 2Mbps download throughput. And the adapter, though it has simultaneous radios, can't have the band to use be selected as a preference. It will always default to 2.4Ghz when both radios are enabled. When you disable the 2.4Ghz radio in order to use the 5Ghz band you lose monitoring capability of the 2.4GHz band. Why have simultaneous radios if you can't have them both turned on? I did find a more up-to-date driver and utility from Ralink, the manufacturer of the RT3573 chip used in the adapter (Trendnet just slaps their name on the driver and utility, they don't write anything themselves). At least it had the proper 5Ghz default but also had all the other shortcomings of the Trendnet provided driver and utility. So, though at first I did not believe them, I now wish I trusted the reviews that questioned this adapter's capabilities. It would have saved a lot of hassles and time. Unfortunately, I also bought a Trendnet TEW-680MB Media Bridge at the same time which I have just started to play with and the same mediocre performance is present. I am going to stay away from any Trendnet products with Ralink chips for the time being. They might work with their own Trendnet routers but are very incompatible with my high-end Netgear routers (WNDR3800 and WNDR4500) which work perfectly with Intel n wireless cards and all other legacy g cards I have. It seems to me that compatibility testing was not an important element in the development of this product and the lack of any upgraded drivers, firmware, or utility since release is telling. And one final thing, for such an expensive adapter you'd think they could put a USB cable that was not so ridiculously short and of such poor quality or at least use a standard USB B connector on the adapter instead of a micro-USB connector which few will have lying around.
This item had a bad range and poor speed . I have an N router on the next room, only one wall no issues with my $27 dollar USB Wireless Adapter and I though that by spending a bit more, I would get a better reception long range adapter with the speed of a demon, but I got a normal subtandard product. I would just stick with what you have till it goes wrong, then buy another one just like it, if it works, don't fix it. I have cable 12Meg speed for streaming videos and making the whole internet experience a bit more fun. Hope this review helps. (Good Luck)

No problems here . I purchased this to use with a Dell D600 running Windows XP SP3. I was worried about the age and compatibility of this laptop but the Wi-Fi adapter installed without difficulty and now the laptop has very convenient wireless Internet. I appreciate the size of the adapter which makes it possible to leave it plugged in while transporting the unit without fear of damaging the USB port.
