This review is from : Siemens SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router (SS2602)
This router rocks! . Bad:Product comes in a plastic shell - be very very careful that you don't drop this puppy. Came with a CD (useless). Hardcoded default class C mask 255.255.255.0Good:Came with a very helpful single page quick start guide. Web browser configuration made this set up really painless and quick. Although package do not state much, this does pack a bunch in a small size.My Experience:I updated the firmware from the manufacturer's web. Then selected default security setting to block off unwanted probing. Then I went to port scanning... This ... is STEALTH! Nada! Zilch! It doesn't even respond to SYN-flood! What a firewall! This puppy works as screening router! Configured VPN (if you have static IP this really helps) to office, and what a difference from dial-up! And cloned MAC address on existing proxy server. Woww, this one rocks! My PCs at home are on Win98SE, 2000, XP, Netware, and SMB on Linux. I wired one port to my switch using uplink port and other one to HP laser printer's MMIO card. All assigned DHCP and DNS from this small box! And I was able to customize DHCP and DNS ranges. Defined web server in the DMZ and enabled honeypot for those crackers out there. I'd be surprised if someone hacks my Apache box now.
Siemens SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router (SS2602) Reviews
Security . After multiple attacks and viruses, I bit the bullet and purchased the Siemens DSL/Cable Router. I was concerned that two ports would not be sufficient for my needs, but I surmised that I could use a cross connect cable to my HP hub. I needn't have worried - the Siemens auto-detects transmit and receive and configures itself - no cross connect needed. It also auto senses 10/100 ethernet.Installation is simple and straight forward (do, however, shut off your DSL/Cable modem for a minute or two to allow it to recycle for the "new" IP lease). Administration by default is simple and all that's needed for a home installation - however, there are many options and settings allowing for advanced configuration. Monitoring and admin is through a simple web page interface - add it to "favorites" and access with a mouse click. Be warned - the two page installation manual (see, I said it was simple) has some rather bizarre and arcane directions for @HOME users (whoever they are) - I suspect those folks are not going to find installtion so simple as we RoadRunner subscribers. There are other routers available for slightly more money (albeit, typically with 4 ports) but I have a Siemens 2420 Gigaset phone system and am very pleased with the quality and performance - the router has given similar results
Siemens SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router (SS2602) Opinions
Simple cheap home networking solution . I have 2 PCs at home and just upgraded my broadband from an internal DSL modem (fried after a recent power failure) to a new external cable modem connection. Whereas before I used one PC as an internet proxy server and connected the other PC with a hub, this ...item lets both machines talk to each other at 100base-T speeds and share a broadband internet connection.Setup was a snap--you connect everything, make sure TCP/IP on both computers is set to DHCP ("automatic"), and reboot the computers. At that point, they're getting their IP addressing from the router, acting as a DHCP server, while the router deals with the ISP. Then you connect to the router's HTML admin interface (NOT an external website, as another reviewer seemed to think), and run though a few wizards. When it's done, you're sharing the connection between both PCs (and with an el cheapo hub, you can add lots more) and a basic hardware firewall provides at least some degree of security. The printed documentation is just the basics to get you started, the more complete docs are in a PDF file on a CD. Since the full-blown documentation is only 32 pages, this baffles me--is it really cheaper to create a CD instead of printing a 32-page pamphlet? So far, so good. It's simple yet has a lot of features I might use in the future--VPN support and NAT to name a few. For 40 bucks, it's a great deal.
absolutely smooth sailing . We were looking around for a simple router/firewall, that would automatically protect against hackers, and streamline net access in our small office network. Amazingly, this incredibly inexpensive product does the trick nicely. It took about 15 minutes to get up and running, counting the time to type into the router our Sympatico DSL internet account details: name, password, and set connection type to PPPoE. Getting notieably faster internet speeds now that one of the workstations is completely finished from having to work the tiresome role of a proxy server. Bonus, it has cool power user features: triggered port opening, and client filtering based on time/day of week. The two guys who left negative comments seem totally clueless because: first, the firmware in the unit is burning fast; second, I configured the router with great ease before connecting to the internet. Excellent little product, as another reviewer said, as it's in a hard plastic casing, avoid dropping on stone/concrete flooring.
Wow what a deal! . I'm certainly not a networking wizard, so I planned on some trial and error setup. As it turned out, I got 2 machines up and running fine after about 10 min using the default settings. All the "setup" consisted of was plugging in cables. It even comes with a ethernet cable that's not mentioned on the box. I will be using my work laptop along side my PC with the laptop using a VPN tunnel to work. Everything is transparent and I had no problems at all. My service is provided by ATTBI.If you need to connect just a couple machines, you really can't beat this router. (You can add a hub later if you need to add more machines.)
Great product for price . I have been using this router for about 3 weeks now and it has been working great. The setup was easy and I was up and running in about 15 minutes. Technical Support is exceptional as they are open 24/7. I called on a Saturday afternoon to setup my router for online gaming and was surprised to find that I got right through and the help was great. They answered all my questions and were very knowledgeable. Total satisfaction.
Unbelievable performance for the price . We are an Wireless ISP. We have found a way to provide our customers with cheaper service via this device. We thank siemens for this unbelievable product. Sincerely RadioNet,LLC
Fine product from a good company. . Recently my wife and I -- who each have a computer -- decided to switch from 56K dial-up internet service to high-speed internet service from our cable company. Because we want to be able to use both computers at the same time we needed a router. We selected the Siemens SS2602 because of Siemens' reputation and also because of the bargain price relative to the price of routers by less well known companies. So far our bargain-priced Siemens router has performed flawlessly and we are quite pleased with it. I should point out that this router is quite versatile: it works with both cable and DSL modems and with both PC and Macintosh computers (my wife and I both use Macintoshes). Highly recommended.
Low Price does NOT mean cheap . This little box has all the power of a 3com, netgear (3/4times as expensive) or a dlink (twice as expensive). It only has two ports, but will work with up to 254 computers like a dlink or netgear. I have multiple 2-15 computer networks running off this little box and it's been performing flawlessly. It's MUCH more friendly than a sonicwall or 3com though a little less userfriendly than a dlink, but any semicompetent tech with a basic understanding of ip and firewalls would have an easy time setting it up if they RTDM (Read The D$*# Manual).Never needed tech support so I can't say how that is.All of this is from the point of view of a tech who understands about NAT, firewalls and other semi-basic network knowledge. If you're a novice looking for a simple setup you might be able to get away with this if you Read the instructions, but I'd recommend hiring a tech and saving yourself a lot of trouble if you don't really want to spend time learning about the geek terminology.

Cons Review
No good - piece of garbage . I'm no computer newbie. As a computer professional I was looking to buy a cheap, easy router to hook up. This proved to be quite the opposite. Slow, unresponsive firmware, coupled with ineffective and ignorant service = major frustration. This is the worst product you can buy for such a simple task.DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

Works great...mostly . Does what it's supposed to do.
When plugging it in for the first time, you must plug in a usb keyboard to activate the menu and set things like IP address and password, local time, etc.
The manager software supports, day of the week and time of day scheduling but not scheduling for a specific date and time.
I like the HDMI port, and the fact that HDMI does carry audio, so one cable between the box and the TV makes things easy. You can have it turn on at a certain time and off at another time. HOWEVER you must have a TV that automatically shuts down when it loses the HDMI signal.
I apparently didn't set the time correctly, so all my scheduling is 2 hours off. And I'm having trouble reloading the internal menu to change the time. I must be missing something.
But adjusting for time discrepancies, it works great.
Lobby TV . We installed this device in the lobby with internal controls to show current city events on a TV. It is a great education tool.

3 Months of cheap great quality VoIP!! . I received this item as a package from [...] about 4 months ago, they have an unbelievable package and the lowest price on the internet (200/year!) - I had to try it. Installation on my network was easy even with the complexity of my network (multiple hardware routers and firewalls). For most users it simply replaces your existing firewall, plug it into your cable/dsl connection, plug your computer into it, after about 30 seconds to a minute the SPA-2102 will sync with the VoIP provider and your set to go. Voice quality is so good i thought the calls coming in were on the old phone line! 5 Stars by me, goodbye ATT!!!! :D
Terrific solution - with more help elsewhere on Amazon . This product is also listed at

Cisco Systems Small Business Pro Phone Adapter with Router Reviews
Easy to use - Needs expert to set up . Once you finish with the complex set up process which includes connecting through a network cable with your computer and changing a whole lot of different values (needs expert guidance on what to change) the cisco VoIP is great. You have to connect the AC power, phone plug and network cable and you are ready to go.
I'm in a place where the fastest internet connection is awfully slow (512Kb), however the sound quality is great. One out of ten calls has delayed sound or distorsion, for the rest of the time you feel you are calling to your neighbor.
Another great attribute is that is very small and light; you can pack it in your bag and take it anywhere. AC adapter is good for 120V to 240V, another flexibility to take it to different countries with different voltages (you may need an adapter for different connections shapes).

TP-Link TL-WA730RE 150Mbps Wireless Range Extender w/ 1x 4dBi Antenna

This review is from : TP-Link Wireless AP/Bridge/Repeater (TL-WA730RE)
No Nonsense Extender . Used this with a TP-Link WL RT TD-W8960N, configuration was a push-button experience. Plug it in, press one button, press the other bitton, and you are good to go with a secure network.

Cons Review
Connection time: 5 min tops . I needed a repeater to grab my landlords connection (Belkin N1) from the adjacent bldg. This thing was easy enough to setup initially, but it within 5 minutes, the connection would freeze and I'd have to reset it. I proceeded to try a million settings configurations to try and get it to work, but to no avail. Tech support was prompt, but told me all the same stuff I'd already tried. Nothing could fix this issue, so I returned it and got the Hawking HWREN1. It worked right out of the box with no tinkering required; definitely worth the higher price.
Does not support hidden SSID of Linksys/Cisco root access point . This is a cheap and simple range extender without any of the bells and whistles of more prominent brands like Netgear. So if price is the main factor, this is a decent range extender. However, there are two main drawbacks. Reliability is not its strong point. One would need to reboot the router every now and then, say around once a week. Secondly, it could not connect to my root access point (the main router that is connected to the modem / wall socket) if my access point was set to not broadcast its SSID. This may not matter to the majority of people, but for those who like to hide their SSID, this is an annoyance. What is irritating is that the range extender only requires the MAC address of the root access point with its corresponding passphrase (no SSID name is required) AND it was able to detect my root access point's MAC address via its built-in access point scan, so there is no reason why the SSID would be an issue. I think hidden SSID of the root access point is supported but just didn't work in my case, because there was the option to disable the broadcast of the SSID of the range extender. This would a pointless option if the root access point had to broadcast its SSID. I encountered the same problem on my old Linksys/Cisco WRT54G and my new Linksys/Cisco E4200 which runs the N750 protocol. Therefore, it appears there is bad compatibility with Linksys/Cisco products.

Arkview Bus-Powered USB 2.0 4-Port Hub . Comes in handy when I need to connect a number of things to my laptop.

Cons Review
Product description incorrect - Buyer Beware! . "Package Content; Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4 Port Hub; Power Adapter; USB 2.0 Cable;"

The product description describes an "optional" power adapter, then goes on to state (as shown directly above) that the adapter is IN the package.

This is INCORRECT.

This is NOT a powered USB hub.

Further, in checking items sold by Arkview on Amazon, you apparently cannot buy an "optional power adapter" from them, at least not on Amazon.

I'm sure it would be marginally adequate for low end needs, tho' when I plugged it in I got red warning lights rather than the lovely "aquaflow" blue as promised in the picture. :) It installed fine, but the computer did not recognize anything plugged into it.

Ah well...

Returning it today.

Wireless G USB Network Adapter w/ external SMA jack Apple Compatible

This review is from : Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A
Finally a removable antenna . I've been waiting a couple years now for a wireless manufacture to "get it" and realize there is a market for a USB wi-fi dongle with a detachable antenna. For all the PC Card versions out there with detachable antenna, it's taken forever for someone to come out with a USB equivalent. Finally, Hawking has, with the HWUG1.

The version I purchased is the Macintosh version (HWUG1A). This comes with a driver from a chip maker called Ralink. Ralink has been doing a public beta with this driver for a few years now, and I was already familiar with it. It's in pretty solid shape now. I guess you could say it's ready for prime time. And now that Ralink are actually getting money for it directly from OEMs like Hawking, MacSense and a couple of others, the driver is likely to be maintained and kept in good condition through OS X upgrades. This is an important consideration because, unlike some other nework interfaces, a wi-fi dongle requires a driver apart from anything that comes with the standard Mac OS X install.

The screw on antenna uses the popular and common SMA connector. Hawking sells several omni-directional and directional antennas that are compatible. I have also attached it to a Cantenna which works very well. But lately my favorite solution is to add a Tritium Flatenna reflector. I like the Flatenna because it packs so flat and slips right into my laptop case with my papers. Ironically, the Flatenna doesn't require a detachable antenna. But I still regard this feature as important.

Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I wish it had cost a bit less. I have been able to purchase D-Link wi-fi USB dongles, that I was previously using with the Ralink beta driver, for as little as $20. I paid over $50 for the Hawking. Also, the D-Link comes with a nice, weighted USB stand and extension cable. The Hawking does not. But with the included, foldable antenna, there is less need of a remote stand base.
Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A Reviews
Driver recognition... . This adapter comes with the standard Ralink (the chipset which is used) wireless utility rebranded as Hawking. There is a problem however, some Mac owners find that after a restart the device is no longer recognized by the utility (the utility will read "No Device!!"), and you need to remove the USB device and plug it in again. A work-around for this can be downloaded here:
http://mitglied.lycos.de/thomsmac/RT2500Replug.html

From the page:
"A solution would be a dummy driver, which occupies the stick at start-up. After a certain time the dumy driver would release the stick and simulate un- and replugging. So the original driver gets a second chance to be found. This is exactly what this driver does."

Also, there is a package of the utility/driver that has the replug integrated, which can be found here:
http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t33896-0.html
(I previously was using a Linksys stick, and this utility works with the Hawking as well.)

As for the HWUG1A, its reception is just as strong as my previous adapter. The signal is slightly boosted if you use it in conjunction with the Hawking Hi-Gain 2.4 GHz Directional 7dBi Compact Antenna in problem spots, but you may not see much of an increase where there is not much interference between your router and device.

I'm not sure if there is a real difference between the HWUG1A and the HWUG1, which can be found on Amazon for a lower price. Perhaps it's that this packaging reads "Mac compatible," and includes a disk with the Ralink Mac utility, which can be downloaded from the Ralink site.
Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A Opinions
Works Great . The Hawking Wireless G adapter worked great on my wife's white iBook, her new MacBook Pro unibody, and my older MacBook Pro C2Duo all running Leopard.

She is now able to get WiFi all throughout the house - even where the built in iBook Airport would not stay connected. And you can get an optional higher powered antenna, screw it on, and the range is increased.

Make sure you order the "A" version HWUG1A - it's the Mac product.

Don't use the CD to install - download the newest driver from here:
http://www.hawkingtech.com/support/details.php?CatID=35&FamID=111&ProdID=362#Drivers

Once the software is loaded just remember to turn off your internal Airport, plug the Hawking into your USB, and launch the Hawking software if you want to see what is going on (and enter and/or save WEP passwords). If you save your WEP password it all happens in the background automagically!

Great for traveling oversea. Used it along with the Hawking High Gain Directional Antenna. . I got this along with a Hawking mini antenna (Hawking HiGain Directional Antenna, mini indoor, 7dBi - HAI7MD). The pair is perfect for traveling oversea. While in Europe, I was able to pull in weak signals from free WiFi hotspot, and avoid expensive roaming charges.

The directional aspect of the antenna works great. You can actually see the signal strength changes when you turn the antenna around in 360 degree, until you get a good signal. In many cases, I was able to get 1-2 bar increases in signal.
faster . I bought this item because I got internet from my neighbor and the conection was slow .It works pretty good.
Good device working as expected . I got it working as i expected. Easy to install. No reason to buy the MAC version which is more
expensive since it is the same as the PC version and you can get the drivers on line.
The only reason I bought the MAC one is because I could not have any PC ones delivered internationally.
marysu . The product worked good for about 8 months, then it just stopped working i had to buy another one :(

Cons Review
Like the Beverly Hillbillies rickety ride out west so does this adaptor barely hold together . I own the original MacMini, which does not accomodate an internal AirPort card. My Mini also only reasonably accomodates OS 10.3.9. Therefore, my need for this product was admittedly narrow and specific. My previos fix for this issue was the ubiquitous D-Link DWL-122 uber usb adapter, which uses the same Ralink chipset that makes this little Mac-to-router tango work at all.

While this usb network adaptor currently works, it took considerable frustration and expertise to get it to function in the slightest.

The driver installation is difficult for MacUsers because it uses a lot of complicated network jargon that is more akin to a PC power user (not us happy, dumb Mac-ies who rely on expensive, simple bulletproof products). It is clear Hawking just took their cues from the PC version (HWUG1) and assumed they could "hawk" this product on the few Mac users who fall beyond the seamless purview of total AirPort architecture.

After clearing this software hurdle, I found (by wading through screen after screen of confounding PC speak) that the adaptor was working only intermittently: it received most of my router's transmission seamlessly, but correctly transmitted few if any of my requests back.

I went to Hawking's tech support website for this product. No dice. Found same confusing PCesque brochures in pdf that I held in my hang in paper form.

I called Hawking's 24/7 support line. After a worthless conversation with an otherwise unpleasant Indian woman (who did little more than read prompts off her computer screen and, I might add, didn't share 1/1000th the investiture in my problem), I came away knowing that it was MY problem for not knowing how their adaptor worked with MY router. MY router is an AirPort Express...perhaps the most common router an average Macuser might choose. Did tech support (online and via phone) have a specific fix for it? No.

I called two expert buddies. One works at a major healthcare conglomerate in networking. The other works for Apple. They got the job done. I repeat: a network professional and an Apple employee are required to get this junk to function. If you aren't connected enough to work this product yourself, I suggest you look for a MacFriendlier product.

They both informed me that the whole thing would run a lot smoother on WPA encryption rather than WPA2 encryption. They were right. DON'T run this product on the safer WPA2 unless you wish to find yourself in my particular predicament.
why this review is so short . it just took me over one hour to get on line. i got this in the mail 8 days ago and it is broken already. the software that comes with it keeps saying there is no device plugged in. but there is . it simply will not work.

also the range is VERY short, i am just 5 feet from the router and it says 40% signal. when i go the next room it gets no signal at all.

i am sorry the review is so short, if you have questions ask in comments and hopefully i will get a better source of internet access.
Mac mini mismatch . The experience began poorly with an installation CD that was unreadable and went down hill from there.

I bought the product to use with my mac mini, but the usb plug was backwards, so the antenna could be used only if the computer hung over the edge of the desk. Tech support was often incomprehensible and consistently useless as they read unrelated questions off of their screen. e.g. "What operating system are you using?" Well, even I know enough to know that my usb ports don't switch themselves around when I upgrade my OS!

Their solution was to have me send it back and get another one. Can't see how that's going to fix the problem. I won't deal with this company again.
