Good product for what I need . This is now the 4th of these devices I have installed. I am happy with the performance and the price. It is also nice that they can be used in multiple roles as an AP, Repeater or Bridge. I have used this device as an outdoor unit for a hotel that I administer and inside in a huge furniture store for mass coverage, so far so good.
Hawking HOWABN1 Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-N Multifunction Access Point Reviews
Nice unit . Great box. The setup can be confusing. Use the utility on the CD to discover it, or plug your laptop straight into the ethernet cable (no switch in between) into the power/ethernet adapater, or try browsing for the SSID or URL (4 ways to hit it).

Try various channels in the wireless setup for finding the best performance: try 3, 7, 11 as 'preferred'.

You can run the ethernet/power cable 300'. I ran 100' with no issue.

The two external antennas are omni, but the internal receive (which talks with your hotspot/base) is unidirectional: face the logo on the main body towards your main wireless (the one you are trying to extend) - so you get the best reception.

Hawking HOWABN1 Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-N Multifunction Access Point Opinions
Great Product . Really simple to set up, also a great offering of peripherals (antennas, cabling, etc.) from Hawking Tech. Felt a little cheap with so much plastic, but its more for the weather-proofing I guess. No complaints.
Best Ever! . I have become a Hawking Fan, everything I get from them works and performs better than expected! Super easy setup and quick installation, the one wire for signal and power Brillant and easy!!
Jeff
Works great! . Prompt delivery, fair price and exactly as advertised. I reside @8,000' and Internet access is via satellite exclusively (we're hostage to exhorbitant prices and limited data usage!). We needed to extend our wireless signal about 500' to our lodge and the installation of this unit made it workable! We'll see how it performs when the winter weather arrives but for now, it's working great! Installation, both hardware and software, was easy but be aware that the signal transmission is highly sensitive to even the slightest movements. It took some hunting and experimentation to optimize the signal.
So far so good . I bought this to relay my internet connection from the building my business is in to the house, about 70 yards. For that purpose, I have to say I am extremely satisfied. The end of the house closest to the access point gets great reception and the other end of the house furthest from the access still gets passable reception even through several very thick walls (not sure about the metallic content).

Installation was straightforward. I had to make a trip to a hardware store to get a wall feedthrough, and I made my own Ethernet cables both for the link to the hub and to replace the power+network cable that runs the unit. I wish there was a little project box or something to house the interface, but I improvised with something from the hardware store. The RJ-45 weather protection seems like it will be okay for a while, but the sun is eventually going to fry all of this plastic.

I pulled back a half star for the plastic and another half star for the interface. The software loads okay, but when I tried to set it up in repeater mode instead of access point mode, the function to set a password didn't seem to work. You basically had a wide-open access to the existing secure WiFi network. Maybe something I didn't understand? In any case, the instructions didn't cover it, so I went back to access point mode. Secure enough, I guess, though I wish it had WPA2 instead of just WPA.

Cons Review
Hawkins Review . The setup took me forever to figure out. Seems like it would be simple but it is not. Once I got it hooked up and working I saw about a 20 percent increase in wireless gain. Then I read you could upgrade the antenna's to increase the output but I could never find them. During my setup I called tech support and wouldn't you know it they were in India, so very hard to understand and hear so I did the best I could. Got it working and been doing fine for about 5 months without any problems. Was it a waste of money...... Yes.
NOT UPGRADEABLE!!! . I contacted Hawking Technologies to verify external antenna configuration and tech support informed me that this unit is NOT upgradeable!!! The Hawking technical support representative on the phone stated that in their lab testing they noticed that connecting external antenna's to this unit caused the unit to FAIL!! WHAT?!?! He did not even offer any other explanations, or beneficial information. Only apologized and (get this...) offered to sell me another unit that WAS "marked" as upgradeable.. EXCUSE ME!!! Why am I not surprised?

I WILL NEVER BUY HAWKING AGAIN!!! I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT NO ONE PURCHASE HAWKING PRODUCTS AGAIN!!

They could have at least sent a firmware update, public notice, recall notice. Even Netgear, D-Link, ZyXEL and many others place an Addendum into their packaging to allow for customers to be informed. Hawking just doesn't care.

I'm sure that this is a great unit as is, however it is being sold and was purchased under the pretense that it was upgradeable by installing additional antennas and this was "UN-clearly" not the case!!

Not true Wireless-N . How can it claim "High speed 300Mbps Wireless-N networking" when the ethernet port is only 10/100? In disbeleif I contacted the manufacturer to make sure the 10/100 wasn't just a typo, nope, not a typo. Such a shame, I had high hopes for this product.

This review is from : Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Smart Repeater and Range Extender (SR10000)
Best repeater/extender on the market!!! . I have a larger house and have gone through many range extenders. (Linksys, Netgear, Hawking, Belkin) I also use a Amped SR300 at my office at work and it works great. I must say from using all repeaters i could find so far, Amped repeaters are the best. Performance and interface wise they are top notch. So... when they came out with the SR10000 i was very excited to try this in my 5000 sq foot home. My wife and children like to use their IPads in the backyard by the pool and my current setup wasn't cutting it. Anyways, i got one of these, went through the very simple setup and was up and running in about 2 minutes. This one is more advanced then the SR300 one with an updated interface so it was a pleasure to use. the range is about double also. i love it. Amped about Amped!
Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Smart Repeater and Range Extender (SR10000) Reviews
works really well easy set up w/good directions . Our broadband connection is an office separated from our house by about 100 feet. Never been able to get wifi in the house before. Did some research and bought the Amped Wireless high power smart router (wireless n 600 mw) and the high power smart repeater (wireless n 600 mw). The router got wifi throughout the house, from 3 bars to 5 bars on my Kindle Fire. With the addition of the repeater, we now have 5 bars of wifi everywhere in the house. The set up for both took me less than an hour - and I've never touched a router before, nor am I especially techie. The setup instructions were very clear and setup was easy. Very happy with the purchase.
Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Smart Repeater and Range Extender (SR10000) Opinions
Wonderful Company Great Products . When I called for the first time I spoke to one of the actual founders because they were running short on staff in the call center. He was wonderful and it's always been an extremely pleasant experience speaking so such a wonderful and enthusiastic staff every time I have called. They ship their products out quickly and always make sure you have a tracking number for your order when it ships. Their products always seem to improve, they're extremely easy to set-up, their website is elegant and their ordering process is hassle-free. I went with their products for my business and the way my building is set-up it's extremely difficult to run wire to the upper floor. Their repeaters are inexpensive and do not require any cables except for the basic power they can be connected to. Their products have saved me hundreds of dollars in wiring services.
Works Great!! . Replaced Netgear repeater which continually lost WiFi connection and had to be reset. This is my first experience with Amped. Unit works great, strong signal and simple setup. Finally a product that performs as promised. Fast delivery with free shipping.
WORST REPEATER EVER . Only use Internet Explorer to configure this repeater or you will suffer :( I spent 2 hours trying to save some configurations with Firefox till I thought the firmware is corrupted.
I finally get a stable wireless signal . I recently moved to a neighborhood with a lot of wireless routers/access points running in nearby houses. My computer, only 2 rooms down, would always disconnect every 15-30 minutes and it would be difficult to reconnect to my Netgear router because of all the wireless interference around me. I replaced the wireless card just to make sure that wasn't the issue, but I still kept on getting disconnected from my Netgear router on a regular basis. This isn't an issue anymore with the SR10000 as it really improved the wireless signal strength. No more disconnects and excruciatingly slow download/upload speeds. I consider myself tech savvy, but even my parents could probably setup the repeater. It always comes with a network cable plugged into the repeater. Just plug the network cable to your computer and access the configuration page. I was up and running within 2 minutes. Finally a wireless repeater that is worth the money.

This review is from : Ubiquiti BULLET2 AP or CPE Outdoor 802.11b/g
Highly fuctional very competitively priced . If you are considering an investment into a long-distance WiFi network link, do yourself a huge favor: build it with Ubiquity radios. It's not just that they work well -- they definitely do, it's also their full-featured on-board configuration/diagnostic facility, and even more, the extensive documentation Ubiquity has provided. The entire industry could/should take a lesson from Ubiquity: the quality of tech product support we have all come to expect is abysmal; Ubiquity does it right!

If I were making a Mastercard ad, it would go like this:
----
Trite, informationless, one-line descriptions, written by someone for whom English was not a first language: included in cost of ordinary hardware.

Rich, descriptive paragraphs, complete with pros, cons and use-case scenarios for each option and setting, as provided by Ubiquity: priceless!
----

And a competitive price point seals the deal. The fact that Bullet2HP does not include a built-in antenna is, in practice, an asset -- too often built-in antennas are a woefully inadequate, and thus, a waste. (From my experience, a $20 12 dBi panel antenna runs rings around a competitor's built-in 10 dBi.) Choosing the right antenna for your application gives you a much better value.

I wish I had started out with Bullet2HP's when my current project began, it would've saved me immeasurable time and considerable expense. That project, for those who might be interested, connects a rural area to a broadband connection 3 miles away, and makes it WiFi-available to those within a half-mile radius. Bullet2HP brings the Internet to the mountains!

TP-Link TL-ANT2406A 2.4GHz 6dBi Indoor Directional Antenna

This review is from : TP-Link NT TL-ANT2406A 2.4GHz 6dBi
Nice Improvement . With the wireless router in a corner of a metal laced area, the signals were unreliable, but with this antenna the improvement was dramatic and very simple to obtain. I aimed it up from the basement through the core of the house, getting good results on all floors and very little signal outside in the neighbors yards. Far surpasses what was possible with the routers original antenna.
TP-Link NT TL-ANT2406A 2.4GHz 6dBi Reviews
Excellent wifi antenna . I purchased this antenna at a different place, for around the same price. This thing pulled in networks from a mile or more away, and fixed the problem I was having getting a weak signal in my garage on various wifi devices from my router in a room on the far side (easily 100 ft)of the house, through several sheet rock walls. I was averaging -80 to -90 dbm on different devices from smart phones to ipods to laptops, and after putting this antenna on my router, and pointing it in a direction that pretty much includes the whole house, the signal strength went to -50 to -40dbm on the same devices, and there are no more weak spots in the house. This is a directional antenna, and needs to be aimed in the direction you want the signal to go-it transmits in basically a half-circle or sphere out from the face of the antenna. This one works great for the price. Is also excellent for war-driving, the strong magnet in the base keeps it solidly stuck to the roof of a car while driving, with a cable plenty long enough to reach inside thru the window.

Feature TP-Link NT TL-ANT2406A 2.4GHz 6dBi

  • Features 130cm extension cable ensuring flexible deployment and better performance
  • Compliant with 802.11n/b/g (2.4GHz); 6dBi signal gain; 130cm low-loss extension cable; RP-SMA Male connector
  • 6dBi directional operation boosts your signal to a further distance in a specific direction
  • RP-SMA Male connector, works with device with RP-SMA Female connector

AIRONET 1200 ENT WIRELESS AP 802.11B 11MBPS 2.4GHZ

This review is from : Cisco Aironet 1200 Series Access Point ( AIR-AP1220B-A-K9 )
Just as described. . Ordered this access point to add wifi for the customers at my store, worked seamlessly with the preexisting rack equipment. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Strong signal everywhere I go. Props to Cisco.

Cons Review
No antennae; Poor customer service . I ordered the Cisco Aironet 1231 the other day, and after it arrived, set it up, and...couldn't get a wireless signal. I called customer support and was told I would be called back by a technician (which obviously the first person was not) within an hour. We waited...and got online to try to figure things out. Turns out that in VERY small print on an obscure documentation page of the 1231 it says at the very bottom that two external antennae are needed for the 2.4 GH wireless (802.11b/g) to work. I was even more disappointed to find out that the required antennae were available online for only $16 a piece, which makes Cisco look really cheap for not including such a small but vital item with a $500 router.

Although it took an astonishing twelve hours for customer support to get back to me, since I registered my complaint with them they have been very helpful. I really hope that they improve their web site-it really is not that helpful since you have to weed through pages of documentation before you can even begin to find information you need. I still haven't used this router since I'm waiting for the required antennae I had to order somewhere else. Cisco routers are supposed to be good, but as a warning to you, the potential customer, be aware that 1) you need to purchase external antennae with this product; 2) my initial experience with customer service was pretty disappointing.

This review is from : Netgear WAB102 802.11a/b Dual Band Wireless Access Point
wow . If you already have an older 'wired' router, this is definitely the way to go. Just plug it in to an available plug on your existing router. Forget about the noisy 2.4ghz 11b and/or 11g, and go with this second generation 11a/b unit with the atheros chip. Not only does it provide turbo 108 MB 5 ghz 11a, it also provides 11b, so if you have any friends that need to connect they can with the popular 11b standard., compared to my SMC 'wired' router and my USR Turbo G wireless routers this is a quality solid corporate grade unit. The manuals are excellent, I had no problems installing it, within minutes it was running, plus 3 year warranty.I also ordered an SMC2335W cardbus adapter with the WAP, which is an 11a/b adpater that supports 108 MBps turbo 11a. I was hesitant since this card was not on the recommended list that tiger provided for use with the WAB102. After doing some research I found out that this adapter used the same chipset as the WAB102 so I figured it would work well, and it did ...for only $20! ..plus great SMC limited lifetime warranty.**PLEASE NOTE: THIS SMC CARD STARTED CAUSING MY PC TO CRASH AFTER ABOUT A WEEK, THE SIGNAL STRENGTH ALSO DROPPED, AND IT CAN NO LONGER MAINTAIN A DECENT CONNECTION. SMC SUPPORT WERE NOT HELPFUL AND WOULD NOT GIVE ME AN RMA UNTIL I TRIED IT ON ANOTHER LAPTOP. WHICH I THINK IS AN UNREALISTIC THING TO EXPECT, 'HEY, MIND IF I TRY MY FAULTY CARDBUS CARD ON YOUR $3000 LAPTOP' ???? THE CARD DOESN'T START TO FAULTER UNITL IT GET'S WARMED UP, SO I WOULD HAVE TO TEST IT FOR AS MUCH AS A FEW HOURS.** NO MORE SMC FOR ME! I RETURNED IT TO THE VENDOR AND ACCEPTED THE RESTOCKING CHARGE, IT WASN'T WORTH THE HEADACHE TO DEAL WITH SMC SUPPORT.These two items work perfectly together, within a few minutes I had the network setup in 108 Mbps turbo mode. With the WAP on the middle floor of my 3 floor home, I get 100% signal strength no matter what floor or end of the house I'm on, cheers to 5 Ghz. For a test I transfered a 1.7 Gigabyte file, while the file was transferring I slowly walked through the house, making sure I went to the most obstructed places, no dropped connections and the transfer rate never dropped below 25 Mbps, the average transfer rate was 31.7 Mbps, it took just under 9 minutes to complete the transfer, WOW ...only a couple hundred bps slower than my wired 100 meg network.I'm very pleased.many thanks to this article that helped shed some light on the second gen 11a/b from atheros http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article46-page1.phpNeil
Netgear WAB102 802.11a/b Dual Band Wireless Access Point Reviews
Ideal wi-fi solution! . For all those interested in Wi-Fi or 802.11b, but have concerns about its performance and stability, this is your ideal solution. The SECOND generation 802.11A/B chip from Atheros is a world of difference from the first generation chips. The new versions is more stable, achieves real connections at the advertised 108 MB when paired with the WAB501 card. The range is between 75 and 100 feet indoors on A band but B band is a little worse. This may change with new software updates from NetGear. Buy it before June 30, 2003 and get a [monetary] rebate on both products.

Cons Review
A yes B no. . The .a half of this thing works just fine. I have an Netgear HE102 (.a only AP) and it seems comparable in performance. However the .b side is completely worthless. WEP or not, Netgear, Toshiba and other client adapters, all the same. No range, instable connection. Tried latest firmware, nada. Tried a pair of the WAB102's with same results. Steer clear of this thing. Get the HE102, or something better if you need .a, and get a $... special out of the sunday paper for your .b/.g needs.
It's a piece... . Oh the problems I have had... (note that I only use the B side of the unit ) ...
1. frequent auto-reboots. Yep, it resets itself at random...
2. very limited range... walk into the kitchen => no signal
3. limited compatibility... Had to replace a few cards ( MS & SMC work & can be found cheap )
4. the wireless connection seems to slow to a halt... you can still pull an ip and browse the internet (at circa 2400 baud speeds)... a reset of the unit fixes this momentarily, but considering you have to either a) walk to the unit and push a button or b) slowly load it's config page and do it -- it's not worth the hassle.

Do like me and buy something else... something with all good reviews.
Stay clear of this unit . This unit works on 802.11a only, the 802.11b barely functions, if at all. Unit is constantly locking up, but could not get Netgear to issue an RMA. Tech support was not helpful, definately overseas with a language barrier. I would not recommend this unit or Netgear as a company.

This review is from : ZyXEL PLA-450 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV 802.11g Wireless Access Point
Great alternative if cat5 is not possible . We recently built out our basement and before I spent the time and money to cat5 my whole house or possibly add a second cable modem, I decided to give the PLA-450 + 1 PLA-401 a try. To my amazement, I saw no degradation of speed when connected to the PLA-450 wirelessly at a reasonable range than I did when connected directly to my cable modem. This powerline duo smokes. My cable modem is on the second floor and my primary DLink wireless router is connected to it. Needless to say, getting great coverage from the second floor to my basement was not possible on the DLink. So the PLA-450 acts as my second wireless router (called an access point) allowing me to plug it into any wall outlet in the house. You do have to have at least 1 PLA-401 (connected to the primary router) and then your powerline link is complete. The PLA-450 is a good wireless device permeating interior walls with ease and maintaining reasonably strong reception with my laptop - even with a floor in between. Accessing the PLA-450 device via a browser is a little tricky the first time. You have to temporarily change you IP address on your network connection. I called support and they were easy to get ahold of and nice and friendly. The instructions do tell you what is needed so a call is probably not necessary for most users. I am thrilled that I can get near cat5 performance without having to hard-wire my house. A great product that suits my need perfectly.

Cons Review
Failed after 6 months of use . At first, this router worked wonderfully, it was fast, easy to connect, easy to set up networking and easy to use the homeplug networking via the electrical lines in my home.

But after about 6 months, the router began to randomly reset itself and lose connection to the internet and PC (wireless at first then even to the wired PC). As we entered the 7 month, the resetting of the router became more frequent and would nearly reset every time I tried using the internet.

I returned the router to ZyXEL for an easy return/exchange which required me to pay S/H charges and took about 2-3 weeks to get a replacement (a new one).

When the new one arrived, again the router worked wonderfully for about 6-8 months before it began to do the same old thing again. I emailed ZyXEL and the only help they could provide was that the power supply feeding the router was bad or the outlet strip was bad, which I knew was not true since the same power supply and outlet strip also sourced my pc, monitor, printer, etc with no problems. I even moved the router and connected directly to a outlet on th wall and had the same problems (router is faulty - again).

Since then (about 5 months ago), I've retired this router for a Cisco Valet Plus and for the price i paid (about the same as the ZyXEL), it is working great and I've had no problems to report on. And, the wireless connection is of better quality than the ZyXEL.

I would warn against purchasing the ZyXEL as I wonder if their product has a fault that shows up after 6 months or so.

TP-Link TL-WA500G 54Mbps Extended Range Wireless Access Point with Detachable 4dBi Antenna

This review is from : TP-Link TL-WA500G 54Mbps eXtended Range Wireless Access Point
Inexpensive and rock solid but lacks novice user-friendliness . I've installed about a dozen of these devices over the last year as WDS extenders for homes; Access Points for coffee shops, libraries; network bridges; and as clients. They've all run 24/7 under respectably heavy loads with no issues. Average unattended run time has been 70 days (power outages causing shutdowns) with only one of the devices out of all of them even getting a manual restart.

Heck, turned out that the restart wasn't even needed. It had been running for 102 days and the networked computers were connecting slowly so I gave it the 'ole unplug. Turned out that it was the ethernet switch in the equipment closet. How's that for reliability! It out ran an ethernet switch!

It's not all sunshine though. Our local computer shop didn't think to highly of them as they had near a 100% return rate, we bought so many of them and never returned any that they asked about it and I told them, "They are rather difficult to configure and require that you manually assign an IP address to the computer connected, understand the terminology, as well as do things in the right order." On the upside, I've gotten quite a few referrals from them to come install them for customers. The return rate on units I have installed have been zero as well.

The units support being used as an Access Point, a Point-to-point Bridge, a Point-to-multipoint bridge, AP client bridge, and single AP client. WEP keys up to 156bit, WPA, WPA2, RADIUS, have DHCP servers built in, removable antenna, and adjustable power output as low as 1/8th normal output (in other words, more than just Full, Med, Hi settings). Included is a PoE injector for installations near or in the ceilings.

On the downside, I've not figured out how to set up a Point-to-multipoint bridge network with WPA/WPA2 encryption. They seem to only handle that particular configuration with WEP. I haven't verified this yet as this topology came up only once, and due to some old equipment that also connected to the AP, I had to use WEP anyway.

To sum it up; can't find better for less, but if you don't have decent experience in configuring WAPs, hire someone who does. Really, this applies to Cisco IOS equipment as well. It's not going to hold your hand but once you get the hang of it, they go in easy and are solid. Or, you could spend $100 to get a Netgear... not that those are always easy either.
TP-Link TL-WA500G 54Mbps eXtended Range Wireless Access Point Reviews
Great XBox 360 Access Point Solution . I didn't want to shell out $50+ for a certified xBox network adapter, so I opted for this TP-Link Access Point in "client" mode. It worked like a champ and took about 15 minutes to setup. As some others have noted, you need to have the Access Point run it's own DHCP server as it will not (not from what I could figure out) "forward" DHCP requests back to the main router. So that means you need to setup a DHCP range that is outside of your home router's one to avoid conflicts. My home router assigns IPs in the x.x.x.100-200 range, so I just set this gadget up to serve x.x.x.50-60 range. Why not 5 stars? The provided instruction manual is a bit thin and might spell some trouble for a newbie if s/he doesn't know what s/he is doing.A good buy.
TP-Link TL-WA500G 54Mbps eXtended Range Wireless Access Point Opinions
Versitile Wireless device! . I have used about 2 dozen TL-WA500G's as Access Points, AP Client bridges, and as Universal Repeaters. (any repeater is half speed)

I find the setup straight forward although it does involve knowing networking terms and the DHCP addressing scheme in use in YOUR network.

They work reliably, and are JUST the thing to make wired devices connect wirelessly via AP Client mode.

You will need a computer to do the setup, but they can support any IP device once setup.

Cons Review
Did not work as repeater . I already have a WRT-54GL but needed a repeater for my NON-WIFI printer, so I thought this would work since they advertised to work as a repeater to another AP (Access Point), I followed the instructions to the T as provided but did not Repeater mode did not work. 1. set static ip to 198.168.1.1
2. navigated to the option for Repeater, found MAC address, applied savings
3. Connected the POE to TP router
4. connected Laptop (using static IP)to POEThing did not work. Sorry, too much headache Returning! Instead i'm buying the ZyXEL home plug, less headache, no wireless to setup, and better TOTAL reviews.

This review is from : Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler
Hidden details make this not as exciting as I thought... . At the time of this review, I just received and set up this product. Here's a quick summary of pros and cons:Pros:1. It's got the Linksys look-n-feel, if you know what I mean. Simple, sturdy packaging, stacks well with other Linksys peripherals (I also have their cable/dsl firewall, 10/100 auto switch, and wireless hub), decent instructions, configuration is transparent if you stick to the tried and true, the right set of diagnostic LEDs on the front panel.2. The product set up was a snap with DHCP enabled. The only snag I ran into is that the ethernet port on the box is a crossover port by default (Ethernet, like many communications standards, has "hub" connections and "client" connections. Crossover connections let clients talk to clients or hubs talk to hubs...). Fixed easy enough by flipping the little "Am I a crossover port" toggle on the back and hitting the reset button (also on the back).Cons (mostly net2phone):1. You cannot use your existing net2phone account. There's a special account number assigned specifically for these devices.2. The rates for these devices are higher than the other net2phone rates.3. Don't expect to replace your regular telephone with this phone (as indicated in the manual). It does not support important features such as 411, 911, Caller ID, etc.Recommendations:1. This is probably the product to get if you want net2phone service but you have either (a) incompatible equipment, (b) are having a hard time getting your audio peripherals set up, (c) you want a cordless set up for use with net2phone (although there are solutions for this from Plantronic, e.g.).2. Don't get it for cheaper phone service like I did.Hope this helps!
Network Administrator . Best product for Internet Caffes that offers VoIP. We plan to bye it ASAP.

This review is from : UBIQUITI NANOSTATION 2 LOCO 802.11B/G WIRELESS CPE
Superb Device - But Not for the Novice . The Ubiquiti networking products offer astonishing performance at a very inexpensive price - but they are not for naive end users. They are designed to deliver high performance for network professionals at large scale.

The Loco is specifically designed for wireless Internet providers to supply to their customers (preconfigured with specific installation instructions) for high performance access to a wireless network.

These products are highly recommended if you are network knowledgeable or are prepared to do the self-education necessary to use them effectively.

If you are a network professional, these are some of the best outdoor wireless products available at any price.
UBIQUITI NANOSTATION 2 LOCO 802.11B/G WIRELESS CPE Reviews
Outstanding product . Every once in a while an amazing product comes along at an outstanding price. For me - this is it. I have no affiliation with the company other than owning two of their devices - the LOCO (NANO 2) and the NANO. My Loco is running firmware 3.5.

These are amazing products. The durability is excellent, the performance is beyond any "consumer" product you will buy, and the configuration options are incredibly flexible - allowing you to tune the product to any network use. It can act as an access point, a client, or a bridge. As the other reviewers said, these are not consumer products - they are commercial grade (despite their incredibly reasonable price). So if you are not technical, find a buddy who is who can help you install it. There are also a few "quick-starts" that people have written - but they assume certain uses. It is best to have someone install it who really understands networking.

To those who view the "difficult" setup as a "con" - you have to realize that the power of this product requires advanced knowledge. There is no way to sugar-coat and provide an interface usable by the novice without hiding a lot of the flexibility. It is like buying an MRI machine and saying "why isn't there a user manual that I understand"? Some preexisting background is required.

Outstanding product. Keep it up ubiquity.
UBIQUITI NANOSTATION 2 LOCO 802.11B/G WIRELESS CPE Opinions
recommended platform for dd-wrt . I chose this product because it's known to run the dd-wrt firmware. In addition to the (very reasonable) price for this unit, I paid for a dd-wrt license and followed reasonably-straightforward instructions to get it installed. Seems to run well. POE makes wiring easier.
awesome little units . These little guys are small but work wonders in bridging two locations using the same network. Hardly any instructions provided, but they are simple enough to connect and the setup screens are nothing out of the ordinary for those comfortable with installing standard consumer routers.Get two units and change the hard-wired IP addresses from 192.168.1.80 to something different (e.g. 192.168.1.81 and 192.168.1.82)---no need to use DHCP if your DHCP server starts serving IP addresses at at 192.168.1.100. Then set up the one by your incoming router to serve as an Access Point WDS. Set up the other as a Station WDS and plug another router into it. If the other router supports WDS (e.g. using Tomato), give it yet another distinct IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.2), then you've essentially extended your network without adding another layer of NAT.The only trick was that the AirOS firmware version that shipped with the unit (I think it was 3.4) had a bug that required "Lock to AP MAC" to be filled in. (Apparently this slipped by because older browsers ignored the requirement.) Just upgrade the firmware to version 4.0 before doing anything, and everything should go like clockwork.
Excellent wireless bridge for the price. . This is an excellent wireless bridge for extending your internet to a guest house. It even works thru trees. I recommend this to anyone needing to extend there DSL/Cable modem service to another premise 2 miles or less from the mainhouse.
Good device . Works great.....we are changing our whole system to these devices. The need better electrical protection.
ubikiti rocks . This product is one of the best I've been used in recent years.
easy installation, durability, good price. very good buy
Well made and reliable . I bought a pair of these to use as a wireless bridge from a main house to a guest house. They work great even when the trees have leafed out. However, these are not simple to setup. In spite of their low cost, they are commercial grade equipment and require some expertise setting up.
excellent for skilled installer . the is one of the best APs you can buy. the install is not terribly complicated but it's probably better left for the I.T. professional.

Cons Review
What manual? . Purchased elsewhere.

Pro:

Once you spent some time researching, this thing worked. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to set up once you have the instructions (even for the non-network computer pro). BEWARE upgrading firmware! (see below)

Con:

Assumes you have networking experience with these devices as there is no enclosed printed manual (not even a simple setup sheet which is available if you research the forums!). Labeling is wrong from PoE to Nano and can fry your computer if connected wrong (connect on the Nano LAN socket with Cat 5 cable to the PoE socket on the PoE power supply AND with a cat 5 cable connect the LAN on the PoE power supply to your LAN card)! Must search website for specific instructions - ie to setup for Free public WiFi, hit or miss search. No clear instructions to setup IP address on the computer to access the device - just typing in 192.168.1.20 doesn't work unless you set up your LAN connection first (instruction buried on website). Instructions are scattered all over the website - no clear instructions for easy setup. Instuctions are tedious and incomplete. Trouble with firmware release v 3.5 - AirOS (see below). Clearly a beta release for all. Not for the non technical person at all. Network experts may screw up their system by upgrading to firmware v 3.5. What a mess!

The labeling is wrong. On the Nano device it should say PoE (not LAN) so you connect this end to the PoE. It is mislabeled LAN. Do not connect this to your LAN. There should be a wiring diagram and the instructions should be arranged in order in a single area on the website. Hunting for info is a NO NO as is the serious mislabeling issue. NOT a 'plug and play' - a 'plug and fix and research and ask and fix and pray'! Must have time to waste to set it up correctly (because of the missing instructions). And for techies, trouble abounds if you have an expensive customer set up and upgrade your older firmware to v 3.5 - clearly this version of AirOS is NOT ready for prime time and will cause headaches for some experts let alone the non techie.

After investing time trying to just find instructions to setup the Nano for a free public WiFi access, I found buried, in one of the forums, a person who wrote a short highly detailed easy guide with step by step instructions (see Comment for the link) which the manufacturer failed to include in the product box ( because they didn't write it and assume you are a network pro ). The instructions included with the Nano are printed on the outside of the box and are crappy. Again, there is NO enclosed setup manual nor CD. Advise that you search the website for info before you buy and read the forums.

There are problems with AirOS firmware v 3.5. Some network experts have upgraded their systems from earlier versions to v 3.5 and have had numerous problems with the upgraded system shutting down. These are pros who do network installation for a living. There is a lively debate on this. The company at first denied it. Now it is working to fix this problem. My advice is that if it works, do not upgrade your firmware to the current v 3.5. Leave it alone. Some have reported that even after flashing back to a prior version, some problems still remained!
Please read the forums on this mess.

This device would be rated higher if the company included proper set up instructions instead of hiding them and fixes the problem with the firmware v 3.5 (should not have been released).
