TRENDnet TEW-638PAP IEEE 802.11n (draft) Wireless Access Point - 300 Mbps TEW-638PAP Wireless Access Points

This review is from : TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N PoE Access Point TEW-638PAP (Black)
Works well as advertised - no reboots required . We bought 3 of these to use on the amenities floor of a hirise condo building in Chicago. We bought a PoE Switch and then had a Cat5 run to these locations. The access points provide plenty of coverage. While the other reviewer is correct that its not a gigabit port, so speeds are limited to 100mbps, its more than sufficient right now, and for the price, its not worth spending more on gigabit at this point. If we need to upgrade in the future, prices will drop by then for those.

Easy to set up and install. Again, these are getting heavy use by many users each day -- probably 100 users per day -- and we have run into no issues 4 months after installation.

WARNING: The AP's do not use 3 watts as stated on the specs. They clearly use about 14 watts each when using with a PoE switch.

works fine compact convenience of PoE but lacks some features . This compact 802.11n access point is replacing a much larger 802.11g D-Link access point.Works fine with my 802.11g and 802.11n clients using WPA2 security, and placement is flexible because
AC power is not needed, I'm using PoE.Supports WPS (WiFi Protected Setup), using PIN number or Push-Button. One small complaint: Unlike my old D-Link access point, this Trendnet unit does not let me set the transmitter power
in the setup menu. So it's transmitting at full power to my whole neighborhood. I would like to select 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8
transmitter power to limit usage to inside my house. Also, the manual does not describe many of the options in the setup menus.

Crippled . Why buy a 'n-' spec'd access point or router without gigabit wired ports? So the wifi can handle 300 Mbps, but the port out can only handle 100 Mbps. A network connection is only as fast as the slowest link in the chain.

I want to like this unit. I love the option of PoE done right. And while my personal use of this device would not be for gaming or video streaming now, I would want that in the future. So my issue is that it can't keep up. The brand is coming on strong in a field where there is plenty of improvement (quality of device, feature sets) left for them to make a mark. The offerings from the likes of Cisco is overpriced and of average feature set and quality. The other brands such as Dlink have to overcome years of substandard software or QA testing on their devices.

But this particular model, with otherwise compelling features, doesn't quite make the cut for the speeds touted.
