EnGenius ECB9500 Multi-function Gigabit Client Bridge ECB9500 Wireless Access Points

This review is from : ECB9500 Multi-function Gigabit Client Bridge
Speedy and great value . This WiFi bridge blows consumer units out of the water. With a gigabit uplink to your home network instead of the 100Mbps links most home APs use, it is great for high-bandwidth connections to wired systems such as home media servers.

It has great range, great security, and the web interface is user-friendly.

The latest firmware update on their web site provided bugfixes for some issues I had with it (as it shipped with older firmware) and the firmware was straightforward to install through the web interface.

The device also has a variety of modes including wireless repeater mode in case you want to extend your wireless network (and comes shipped in this mode by default)

It is a swiss army knife of wireless bridges, and for the price, a completely great value.
ECB9500 Multi-function Gigabit Client Bridge Reviews
EnGenius WAP . Very easy install. When configuring EnGenius device you have the option of: Access Point, Client Bridge, WDS Bridge or Repeater. I configured the device as a Access Point. Recieved message "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network ....". To resolve this issue do the following on your computer:
1. right-click Wireless Network Connection icon
2. click "View Available Wireless Networks"
3. highlight <your wireless network connection>
4. under "Related Tasks", click "Change Advanced Settings"
5. click "Wireless Network"
6. under "Preferred networks", click <your wireless network connection>
7. click "Properties"
8. click "Authentication" tab
9. uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"
Also, log into EnGenius device and verify "IEEE 802.1x" is unchecked: select "Security", then click "Wireless".
ECB9500 Multi-function Gigabit Client Bridge Opinions
Amazing Product! . I purchased this because I needed to extend my 802.11n wireless network range to my workshop about 270 feet away from my router. I could get a signal at the edge of the workshop but not really usable. After a lot of research I decided on this product. It literally took about 5 min to configure this as a repeater. The interface is extremely simple and really does not require much advanced configuration even though it is available. After configuring I was able to connect to my network and browse at surprisingly fast speeds. I have not done actual benchmarks but I can tell you it is faster then I expected it to be. If you need a repeater to expand the range of your 802.11n network look no further you have found the device you need.
Incredible value . I've been using a bunch of these in a commercial setting for over a year and I couldn't be more pleased. The fact they support POE and work great with WiDirect systems only adds to the value. I'm going to buy a bunch more and extend the WIFI further in my organization, they're great!
Does a good job . I got this with a POE injector and it has been suiting my needs very well. Has a decent range and good wall penetration. I like the performance of Engenius products, but longevity has been an issue in the past. I've had this one for a few months now and all is well.
Great device . I was looking for a resonable priced professional product and I think I found it. Was easy to setup and no problems so far.
preliminary rating . This is a preliminary review. Reason being: the router was packaged with 3 antennas that will not screw onto the connectors; the connectors on the back of the router are too big for the antennas supplied. I have contacted EnGenius support. We'll see how they handle the issue.
9/29 update:
No response at all to the email I sent.
After 30+ minutes on hold, I got a technician that spoke very good English. When I explained the issue he sounded quite surprised. The next day I received an email that new antennas had been shipped. Will update again after receipt.
10/5 update:
Got the replacement antennas. Printed out the manual and updated the firmaware per another review for this item. Setting up as a router is poorly documented and the rest of the manual is more an explanation of terms than actual examples. Also, there is no "Easy Setup Utility" as with some other routers/access points. After a few stabs at it, I got the router function figered out and connected to my network.
The only other thing I noticed was my Windows 7 notebook took a long time to acknowledge an Internet connection through the EnGenius versus my existing access point. After it connects, it's very fast.
Awsome Range . I compared the ECB9500 to my previous long range champ the Trendnet TEW-631. The AP is located inside my neighbors house and the TEW-631 gave me a 50% signal. The ECB 9500 gives me a 70% signal. Both APs are set to N mode only with the same channel. The ECB has all the configuration options you need and is still easy to set up.

Cons Review
Not the Engenius I Know . Honestly this AP let me down. I expected it to be like most Engenius products offering ultra long range and this baby just doesn't cut it. Now I'm partly to blame because I didn't dig further into the stats here and notice that its not a 600mw unit. Had I known...I wouldn't have bought it. Ultimately I returned it and opted for a true high power model (of course without N) but oh well.
