Confused About Why People Talk of Problems? . I have Windows Vista 64 bit and I find I am rather puzzled why people left so much negativity in regards to this product. It works perfect for me. I had no issue whatsoever in installing, and there was no "Engrish" in the instructions. I bought this so my son could use the WiFi for his Nintendo Dsi and, as I stated, it does the job just fine. Very pleased with my purchase.
PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan Reviews
Exceeds expectations . Plugged into on Windows 7 64-bit and the driver got installed automatically.
Although the driver reported itself working it actually didn't until I rebooted. No big deal.
I knew it'll be about 6 times faster than my old D-link G, what I didn't expect is that now I get "very strong" reception as before it was "very weak".
Same location, same network and although it is very tiny, it still has a better antenna and radio.

I haven't even tired using it as an access point...
What?... Access Point?... Really?...
PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan Opinions
Works very well . I bought this for my Asus computer since the built in wireless is having all types of issues (common with this model, but otherwise a great laptop).

This has been a great solution for wireless coverage. Works very well and is small enough that I don't worry about it getting tore off and breaking.

I highly recommend this for anyone needing a usb wi-fi interface.
Great adapter . This is a great wireless N adapter. Easy to setup and connect to the top 150 Mbps speed as described.
Working with Asus 1005HAB with Mac OSX 10.6.4 . Installed the MacOS 10.6 driver using the included CDROM with an external USB reader/writer connecyed to my netbook. Inserted Planex WiFi device into USB slot. It worked with my Linksys wireless N router. 'Nuff said.
Not working with 64-bit Win7 Home Premium SP1 . This was the first Wireless-N adapter I bought (after buying my first N-band router, a Vizio). It worked great in a 32-bit Vista desktop (HP Compaq) and a 64-bit Win7 Home Premium laptop (Gateway). It had good range, speed and reliability in both machines. However, I just finished building a new desktop with 64-bit Win7 Home Premium, SP1, and as of June 30, 2011 the Planex drivers aren't working.

Here's the play-by-play on my new computer: After installing the driver from the disc that came with the adapter, I got an error message saying the driver wasn't compatible with my 64-bit OS (I thought this was strange because I didn't get that message when I installed the same driver on my Win7 laptop.) So I downloaded the latest driver from the Planex website (v1.1.0.1) and installed it. I promptly got another error message saying I needed to uninstall the old driver first (shouldn't Setup do that automatically in a well-written program?) So I followed the instructions and uninstalled the old driver, then reinstalled the new driver. I promptly got another error message (my third) saying I had to manually install the new driver because Setup couldn't do it automatically in a 64-bit environment. So I followed the instructions again, and now I no longer have a yellow exclamation point beside the adapter in Device Manager, but the Network & Sharing Center reports no wireless networks are available. I suspect the issue is somehow related to my having Service Pack 1 installed, but I can't be certain. So I'm going to have to relegate this adapter to one of my older computers and buy another one that comes with fully functional 64-bit Win7 SP1 compatible drivers. (Oh, and yes there was a bit of Japlish in the on-screen directions.)

BTW, here's my plea for all the Win7 users who review this adapter in the future: Please state your version of Win7 (Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate, 32 or 64 bit, Service Pack) and the version of the driver you're using. Without these details, any review (pro or con) is incomplete. Thank you, and good luck with your Planex product!

Cons Review
Good Hardware- TERRIBLE SOFTWARE - IF 64-BIT Vista - DO NOT BUY . I needed a replacement WiFi adapter for my "daily driver" laptop when the built-in WiFi gave up the ghost. I chose this one over a couple other "mini" USB versions because of good reviews and limited availability of the others- bad choice.

This might be an OK device for use with 32-bit systems, I don't know. I will tell you for 64-bit Vista it is an utter EPIC FAIL. A disaster of the highest magnitude. First - the automated installation routine does not work at all for 64-bit machines. You have to search for the website (it's listed nowhere in any of the printed documentation that comes with the device). Next, manually download, unzip, and install the new set-up routine. Then manually install (using DEVICE MANAGER - remember that dinosaur? )the 64-bit device driver But OOPS... the documentation is all very poorly translated Japanglish, as is the software interface you will have to deal with forever once the device is installed. And OOPS... the listed location of the driver (x86 Programs\ doesn't exist. So expect to go on a fishing expedition to find the drivers.

Once the drivers are installed, now you can proceed with the client software installation. As far as I can tell, there's no way to make the device work without this clunky, Japanglish , almost comical software. I tried several times to make it work without the third-party software but forget it. After two hours of fooling around - trial and error - finally got the adapter to connect to my wireless router (sitting 10' away).

Now that it's running- the speed is just "OK" - and worst of all - this thing really sucks the battery life. It also makes the CPU work for its supper- my whole laptop gets too hot to touch pretty quickly,

Conclusion - I think the 64-bit drivers were a total afterthought. Poorly written and executed. The client software is equally terrible and with Vista at least there's no way around using it. Win7 might be better but I'm not going to test it to find out.

To leave you on a positive note:
The actual hardware is nice. I do love the tiny size of this thing, so I'll keep this around for use with my older 32-bit computers. But for the 64-bit laptops, I'll be purchasing something else ASAP.
DONT BUY PLANEX LIED TO ME . Planex claimed that it would work with an ipod touch. when i recieved my item it took forever to set up on my windows 7 64 bit laptop. then it only wanted to use the device as wireless adaptor in replace of the built in wireless on my computer. i contacted planex and they took again forever to respond. they told me that they dont lie and were very cocking over email about this. there company does not value their customers after hearing what they had to say to me. They should not have told me that it worked with certian devices if they in reality do not. I want a refund of my 20 bucks after being lied to. they said that i have 30 days for my refund. but the wait a week to replay to the 10 emails back and forth. therefore it is not my fault it has taken so long to write this review. I AM VERY UNPLEASED WITH THE QUILITY AND THERE CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO NOT BUY FROM PLANEX OR ASK THEM QUESTIONS, YOU WILL BE LIED TO!! again i wou;d like a full refund due to this

This review is from : Hawking HOWABN1 Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-N Multifunction Access Point
Good product for what I need . This is now the 4th of these devices I have installed. I am happy with the performance and the price. It is also nice that they can be used in multiple roles as an AP, Repeater or Bridge. I have used this device as an outdoor unit for a hotel that I administer and inside in a huge furniture store for mass coverage, so far so good.
Hawking HOWABN1 Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-N Multifunction Access Point Reviews
Nice unit . Great box. The setup can be confusing. Use the utility on the CD to discover it, or plug your laptop straight into the ethernet cable (no switch in between) into the power/ethernet adapater, or try browsing for the SSID or URL (4 ways to hit it).

Try various channels in the wireless setup for finding the best performance: try 3, 7, 11 as 'preferred'.

You can run the ethernet/power cable 300'. I ran 100' with no issue.

The two external antennas are omni, but the internal receive (which talks with your hotspot/base) is unidirectional: face the logo on the main body towards your main wireless (the one you are trying to extend) - so you get the best reception.

Hawking HOWABN1 Hi-Gain Outdoor Wireless-N Multifunction Access Point Opinions
Great Product . Really simple to set up, also a great offering of peripherals (antennas, cabling, etc.) from Hawking Tech. Felt a little cheap with so much plastic, but its more for the weather-proofing I guess. No complaints.
Best Ever! . I have become a Hawking Fan, everything I get from them works and performs better than expected! Super easy setup and quick installation, the one wire for signal and power Brillant and easy!!
Jeff
Works great! . Prompt delivery, fair price and exactly as advertised. I reside @8,000' and Internet access is via satellite exclusively (we're hostage to exhorbitant prices and limited data usage!). We needed to extend our wireless signal about 500' to our lodge and the installation of this unit made it workable! We'll see how it performs when the winter weather arrives but for now, it's working great! Installation, both hardware and software, was easy but be aware that the signal transmission is highly sensitive to even the slightest movements. It took some hunting and experimentation to optimize the signal.
So far so good . I bought this to relay my internet connection from the building my business is in to the house, about 70 yards. For that purpose, I have to say I am extremely satisfied. The end of the house closest to the access point gets great reception and the other end of the house furthest from the access still gets passable reception even through several very thick walls (not sure about the metallic content).

Installation was straightforward. I had to make a trip to a hardware store to get a wall feedthrough, and I made my own Ethernet cables both for the link to the hub and to replace the power+network cable that runs the unit. I wish there was a little project box or something to house the interface, but I improvised with something from the hardware store. The RJ-45 weather protection seems like it will be okay for a while, but the sun is eventually going to fry all of this plastic.

I pulled back a half star for the plastic and another half star for the interface. The software loads okay, but when I tried to set it up in repeater mode instead of access point mode, the function to set a password didn't seem to work. You basically had a wide-open access to the existing secure WiFi network. Maybe something I didn't understand? In any case, the instructions didn't cover it, so I went back to access point mode. Secure enough, I guess, though I wish it had WPA2 instead of just WPA.

Cons Review
Hawkins Review . The setup took me forever to figure out. Seems like it would be simple but it is not. Once I got it hooked up and working I saw about a 20 percent increase in wireless gain. Then I read you could upgrade the antenna's to increase the output but I could never find them. During my setup I called tech support and wouldn't you know it they were in India, so very hard to understand and hear so I did the best I could. Got it working and been doing fine for about 5 months without any problems. Was it a waste of money...... Yes.
NOT UPGRADEABLE!!! . I contacted Hawking Technologies to verify external antenna configuration and tech support informed me that this unit is NOT upgradeable!!! The Hawking technical support representative on the phone stated that in their lab testing they noticed that connecting external antenna's to this unit caused the unit to FAIL!! WHAT?!?! He did not even offer any other explanations, or beneficial information. Only apologized and (get this...) offered to sell me another unit that WAS "marked" as upgradeable.. EXCUSE ME!!! Why am I not surprised?

I WILL NEVER BUY HAWKING AGAIN!!! I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT NO ONE PURCHASE HAWKING PRODUCTS AGAIN!!

They could have at least sent a firmware update, public notice, recall notice. Even Netgear, D-Link, ZyXEL and many others place an Addendum into their packaging to allow for customers to be informed. Hawking just doesn't care.

I'm sure that this is a great unit as is, however it is being sold and was purchased under the pretense that it was upgradeable by installing additional antennas and this was "UN-clearly" not the case!!

Not true Wireless-N . How can it claim "High speed 300Mbps Wireless-N networking" when the ethernet port is only 10/100? In disbeleif I contacted the manufacturer to make sure the 10/100 wasn't just a typo, nope, not a typo. Such a shame, I had high hopes for this product.

This review is from : TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black)
Small Package with Lots of speed - if it works! . We recently bought 2 of these for system upgrades for our personal computers.

The units are pretty compact - only slightly bigger than the old wired antennae for our old PCI G-band cards. The software installed quickly and easily in Windows 7 Home Premium. I really like the detail in the Trendnet application software showing the connection speed (initially was >350Mbps with router about a room and a half away). I was online in <10 minutes.

On the next computer, 2nd unit turned on, but didn't detect any wireless networks. After about a half-hour of troubleshooting - swapped the 1st with the 2nd and found the 2nd to be DOA. We went to an electronics store to pick-up a new one to replace the dead unit. That one worked great.

So to conclude - 2 working great, 1 DOA.
TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black) Reviews
Great Speed & Range - this is the one to get! . Having used the Netgear WNDA3100 and the Cisco AE1000 adapters previously this adapter beats them handsdown.
Neither of the previous adapters could maintain near the 300Mbps advertised, they would typically fluctuate between 54 & 150 Mbps (maybe hitting about 200Mpbs on 5mHz channel), but never holding a constant signal. The TrandNet holds 450Mbsp constantly. I am using the Cisco E4200 router (it also performed well on a Neatgear n750 router).
Range and signal reception are both FAR better than either of the mentioned USB thumb-tpye adapters.
This is the way to go if you need a high speed network connection for streaming or gaming and have a router that supports 450Mbps.
TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-684UB (Black) Opinions
Increased Down/Upload speeds. Very Small! . I was surprised at how small this adapter was based on the picture. I am using this with the Cisco-Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router.

Initially after getting the Linksys E4200 router I kept my old G wireless adapter. The download/upload speeds didn't change at all. I decided to upgrade to a new 450mbps adapter so I ordered this.

When installing the drivers install the whole Trendnet utility. The first time I just installed the drivers and my connection speed was only at 150mbps. I uninstalled and re-installed with the utility and my speeds are at 450mpbs.

Before installing this adapter my download/upload speeds were at 6mb/1mb. After installing this adapter, paired with my Linksys E4200 I am 26mb/1mb.
Awesome 450mbps transmit 405mbps receive . I have this adapter connected to a Cisco-Linksys E4200 and getting 450Mbps sustained transmit and peak 405mbps receive connection to my pc (Windows 7). The pc and router are in the same room.

When I connect the adapter to my netbook (Windows 7) in the other end of my house, separated by a few very dense walls, sustained connection of 130Mbps.

The software installer will give the option to install the "drivers only" or "software & drivers".

The drivers only option would not allow the adapter to function, you need to install the software & drivers.

Luckily this option does not install some junk 3rd party software that supersedes the Windows 7 wireless configuration utility, they work together.

The software provides more options for the adapter and connection speed info.

BTW Amazon is not the lowest price, B&H
GREAT LITTLE ADAPTER . Great, Wish I had gotten this earlier, easy install, no problems, I recommend this product highly. Lowest price from Amazon. I always look at Amazon for low prices.
Awesome Product. . Customers who have tried this product can not beleive the amount of spped they get out of it. Whatever the speed of your modem is it will run at that. It is good for 100 meters indoors and 200 meters if you happen to be outdoors. It definately make a two story building easier, faster access to high spped internet connections
Great little device . Quite easy and intuitive install. Real speed is ~56 Mb/sec in a distance of 3m (10 feet) through two walls. This allows to stream DVD9 iso wirelessly from a different computer in a house.
If you need it to work in 5GHz mode only, installation of a utility is a must, luckily the utility is really small and doesn't seem to have bad memory and system productivity footprint.
However, I give it only four stars because of a high price. Technically I don't have any complains.
Works like a charm on Win7 640bit i7 processor! . Purchased a new desktop with Win7 64-bit ULTIMATE - my old adapter left a lot to be desired - couldn't keep up and after trying the latest NETGEAR device - THAT DID NOT WORK - I read lots of reviews and it was between this one and a Cisco Lynksis -- this took less than 5 minutes to install and my upload AND download speeds are improved. Live in the country and have to use a Sprint 3G Sierra Overdrive for all connections (amazingly better than our 9 years with Hughes.net satellite service!)and this TrendNet adapter fits the bill! LOVE IT

Cons Review
A Big Disappointment . The purpose of a cutting-edge dual-band (and simultaneous at that!) multi-stream adapter such as this is to allow you to create a modern wireless environment using the newest 2 and 3 stream dual-band wireless routers. In practical terms, the 2.4GHz radio band really only has 3 clear channels to choose from so unless you live in a rural area the likelihood of getting more that one channel to bind together to get the multi-stream link speeds advertised by the manufacturers is nil. So, you set up your new multi-band multi-stream router to use one channel of the 2.4GHz band (if you can find a clear one) just for legacy G and single stream N purposes (your smart phone, older laptops, etc). Then you set up the spacious 5GHz band with as many streams and 40Mhz channels as your router will let you claim. Your new laptop probably already has a multi-stream card that can sit on the 5GHz radio band. This TEW-684UB adapter would theoretically be the perfect add-on to a desktop PC in an awkward location for running Ethernet cable. And with simulcast radios you can use the 5GHz for your main connectivity and the 2.4GHz band for monitoring the rest of your network with free software such as InSSIDer. I read the mixed reviews of this device and as usual I thought I would be smart enough to make it work to my satisfaction. My conclusion, however, is that either there is a huge variability in the quality of the adapters, or perhaps they only work well with the same brand chipset on the routers, or the praising reviews here are confusing link speed with actual throughput. Do not trust any review that does not include a speed test (from various websites) comparing the speed of connecting your PC to the Ethernet port of the router with a test using the wireless interface. The link speed your computer reports is of little real significance. The actual throughput relative to a known quantity (your Ethernet connection to the router and onward to the Internet verified by a speed test site) is all that is important. The difference will show you your true wireless speed. And therein lies my extreme disappointment. I should have known something was going to go bad when the setup program had extreme difficulty installing the drivers and the utility under Windows 7-64bit. After installation, the adapter would ignore the enable device function in Windows and the utility did not even list the 5GHz band as even existing. Note the utility, though not strictly required, is the only way to manipulate the radios used and does provide some useful functionality such as listing the local networks in your area and some dBm signal strength meters. I was finally able to to get it installed by using the old workaround of using the compatibility mode and telling the installer (the second setup.exe) that I really have Win XP. Do we really still need to do that in 2011? The next clue that this was more toy than tool is that the profiles that can be set with the utility only allow WEP for the encryption. Puleeze! 802.11n requires WPA2 minimally. Not really a problem since everyone uses Windows itself to control wireless these days and the Windows profile worked fine. The claimed typical output power and receive sensitivity listed on the box are simply bogus (by about 3 times). In my environment (using a cable modem) I get between 24-25Mbps download througput with a 1GB Ethernet connection. On a laptop using an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 card set to 5GHz priority I get 18-20Mbps download throughput with clear line-of-site across an average size living room (no walls). With TEW-684UB at the same location, the 5GHz a/n mode will get me around 0.3-0.5Mbps download and on the regular single stream 2.4GHz g/n mode I get up to 2Mbps download throughput. And the adapter, though it has simultaneous radios, can't have the band to use be selected as a preference. It will always default to 2.4Ghz when both radios are enabled. When you disable the 2.4Ghz radio in order to use the 5Ghz band you lose monitoring capability of the 2.4GHz band. Why have simultaneous radios if you can't have them both turned on? I did find a more up-to-date driver and utility from Ralink, the manufacturer of the RT3573 chip used in the adapter (Trendnet just slaps their name on the driver and utility, they don't write anything themselves). At least it had the proper 5Ghz default but also had all the other shortcomings of the Trendnet provided driver and utility. So, though at first I did not believe them, I now wish I trusted the reviews that questioned this adapter's capabilities. It would have saved a lot of hassles and time. Unfortunately, I also bought a Trendnet TEW-680MB Media Bridge at the same time which I have just started to play with and the same mediocre performance is present. I am going to stay away from any Trendnet products with Ralink chips for the time being. They might work with their own Trendnet routers but are very incompatible with my high-end Netgear routers (WNDR3800 and WNDR4500) which work perfectly with Intel n wireless cards and all other legacy g cards I have. It seems to me that compatibility testing was not an important element in the development of this product and the lack of any upgraded drivers, firmware, or utility since release is telling. And one final thing, for such an expensive adapter you'd think they could put a USB cable that was not so ridiculously short and of such poor quality or at least use a standard USB B connector on the adapter instead of a micro-USB connector which few will have lying around.
This item had a bad range and poor speed . I have an N router on the next room, only one wall no issues with my $27 dollar USB Wireless Adapter and I though that by spending a bit more, I would get a better reception long range adapter with the speed of a demon, but I got a normal subtandard product. I would just stick with what you have till it goes wrong, then buy another one just like it, if it works, don't fix it. I have cable 12Meg speed for streaming videos and making the whole internet experience a bit more fun. Hope this review helps. (Good Luck)

Philips DSR7000 Combination TiVo/DIRECTV Satellite Receiver

Price : Too low to display
BUY NOW
Ditch the VCR and get ready for the channels, the quality, and the convenience of Philips' DSR7000 combination DIRECTV receiver and 35-hour digital video recorder (DVR). Designed to be a second receiver in a dual-LNB DIRECTV system, this single box handles everything from satellite reception to digital audio/video recording. You'll even be able to pause live TV whenever you wish. Required for use are a television, a satellite-dish antenna (which should be properly mounted before you connect the DVR), and a standard analog phone line. All other requisite cabling and accessories are right in the box.

With DIRECTV reception right inside the DVR, you'll enjoy access to over 225 channels of digital DIRECTV programming with the convenience and control of digital video recording. You'll be able to control live TV (pause, rewind, slow motion, or instant replay), access up to 31 premium movie channels and as many as 60 pay-per-view movies per month, use Season Pass to automatically record every episode of your favorite shows every time they air (even if the dates and times change), and subscribe to major professional and college sports (including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, MLS, and NCAA).

Because the unit has two internal tuners, you can watch one program/station while recording another--if that's not the pinnacle of convenience, we're not sure what is. Video is delivered with MPEG2 DVD-quality digital video (though actual quality can vary by station, depending on origination conditions), and you can choose to listen to Dolby Digital or linear PCM (CD-quality) sound.

The DVR offers a host of connections to properly integrate it with your home and with other home-entertainment gear, from its RJ-11 (standard telephone) jack for scheduling information and periodic software updates to AV connections such as composite- and S-video output jacks. An optical digital-audio output (optical cable not supplied) passes a Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround signal to compatible AV receivers and multichannel speaker system so you can immerse yourself in the soundscapes of your favorite movies. Surround-encoded broadcasts let you feel every explosion, hear the roar of a jet approaching from behind, and sense the magnitude of the dragon's cavernous lair.

Use the 14-day advanced-programming guide to find programs quickly and easily. See days of programming, sort by themes, or set reminders to notify you when a program is about to start. And do you find yourself watching a program with a hunch there might be something better on? Use the channel-browse mode to view what is playing on other channels without missing any of your current program.

All family members can customize their viewing with their own lists of channels using custom favorites. One-touch channel-back quickly returns you to a previously viewed channel at the touch of a button. And, with parental control, moms and dads can make sure children only see what they want them to see.

Pretty good - could use improvement . This is my first TiVo and first DirecTV. This thing is amazing. It's truly a whole new way to watch television. It's very easy to use and the quality is great. There are just a few things I wish they would add or change. The dual tuners lets you do some incredible things. For example, say you're watching channel A live, then switch to channel B. You watch that for a few minutes, then decide you might have missed something on channel A. You can pause channel B, switch back to A, and rewind it to catch what you missed! Insane...The integration is pretty smooth between the TiVo and DirecTV interfaces, although in combining the two, they stripped out some features from each. My biggest gripe is that the program guide is the regular TiVo one. The program guide on standalone DirecTV units is much faster and slicker. You also don't get the DirecTV feature that lets you browse channels by logo. Also, even though this is a Series 2 TiVo, the USB ports seem to be disabled. Unlike other series 2 TiVos, you can't connect it to broadband - you're stuck with the phone line. And The Home Media option doesn't seem to be available. Hopefully a software update will enable these features. Finally, it would be nice if it had component video output, but that's not a big deal for me.It does have optical audio out and s-video out, so you still get pretty darn good quality. And of course, you don't lose any quality when recoprding like a standalone TiVo - which is by far the best feature of this thing.
Philips DSR7000 Combination TiVo/DIRECTV Satellite Receiver Reviews
dissappointing image quality . I replaced my old Sony Directv received for this tivo/directv unit.... Reading the various articles on Tivo receivers, I understood that a combined tivo/directv receiver would cause no loss of image quality (a regular tivo unit would first convert the digital satallite signal into an analog signal)... so I expected both live and recorded pictures to be of the same quality that I was used to with my Sony receiver....Well, the live picture quality is definitely less than what my old Sony directv receiver produced, which it is quite disappointing; one of the nice things of satellite tv are the crisp imagines (if you have a good tv set). The recorded picture quality is similar to the live picture quality (so at least no further loss of quality is introduced during recording).I am using the exact same cables (S-video) as with my old unit, so that can't be the issue. Also I don't get the Dolby theater sound signal any longer, my Sony sat receiver delivered dolby flawless (yup, I did enable the Dolby setting on the Philips receiver using the onscreen setup). The system does pickup a broadcast is in dolby, but the audio output is simply not the 5 channel dolby surround (my audio receiver at least doesn't recognize as dolby any longer, whereas it did with my old Sony sat receiver). The tivo stuff all works fine and is very user-friendly, but if you care about image quality or your dolby sound, you should think twice before you buy this unit !
tivo rocks . this box is awesome, but why is it $599 here. does it have somethign that the $99 one i just bought doesn't.
Philips DSR7000 Combination TiVo/DIRECTV Satellite Receiver Opinions
Fantastic Machine . I'm not sure what the other reviewer is complaining about when saying that the TiVo isn't picking up channels and is unreliable. No problems here, I get everything. Also, YOU CANT TELL WHEN ITS ON THE SECOND TUNER. The integration between the 2 tuners is seemless, you watch tv and record on seperate channels, thats all you know. The quality is EXACTLY the same as you get on regular directv... no complaints there... ZERO loss of quality on recordings and live tv.This thing is fantastic, you program in what channels you receive and dont' receive, and it won't suggest shows or anything on the channels you don't receive, wonderful. After a couple weeks of using this, you learn all the tricks to finding great things, when watching tv.. you rate the shows you are watching by pressing a thumbs up or thumbs down on your control, then when you want, you can simply go to TiVo Suggestions and it will suggest shows and like shows to either watch live or record for your convenience. I have tons of Season Passes that TiVo records for me whenever my shows come on, FANTASTIC!!!Another trick, I always start football games 30 minutes after they start, that way you can fastforward commercials and halftime... then by the end of the game you skipped the commercials and halftime and are caught up to real-time to see the finish. FANTASTIC.And guys, the system will auto-record whenever you are watching live tv (and only stores it temporarily until you change channels)... this is AWESOME, that means when you are just leisurely watching a show, and miss something, you can just rewind without having to have hit record earlier. And the ability to control your own instant replays during football games makes this unit worth every cent in gold.. i pause and rewind all the time. And folks, PLEASE don't waste your money on "the latest receivers" this one has all the options, for almost nothing, if you want more space, just search the internet, you can easily put a 120 gig hard drive in it like I did for $60 more and get 120 hours of recording. And for the slow menu problems, thats answered on the system, if you press "page up" or "page down" on the remote, it makes it real quick and easy to browse the guide. In conclusion, this is the BEST TiVo deal you can find, don't waste money on anything else, no problems at all with the unit. FANTASTIC!!!!
Great Buy . This machine is great. Installation was easy. I just unhooked my existing directv box and plugged this one in. I got this because it was way cheaper than a regular tivo. The monthly service was cheaper as well. If you're the kind of person who cannot program a vcr this unit is definetly for you. It is very simple to use and very fun as well.
TIVO is GREAT! Exceeds Expectations . I just got this unit as part of a Directv NFL Sunday Ticket special offer. It works great. I had a brief problem with Dolby signal but after trouble shooting realized I had an incorrect setting on my A/V receiver (analog input). Recorded picture is equivalent to live. Recording is a breeze. Season ticket, Wish list and other filtering features are very useful for auto recording programs. In my situation I have a dual LNB single dish that feeds into a multi-switch, works fine. I now have 3 DIRECTV receivers 2 RCA's and this PHILIPS unit. As far as I can tell they all have the same picture. TIVO is cool!

Cons Review
DirectTiVo is Crippled - Not fully enabled . I've had 6 Tivos but up until now, they have all been freestanding (TiVo1 and TiVo2) units. I switched to satellite about a year ago and was thrilled to find that DirecTV was offering Tivos.....Until I brought mine home. What they DON'T tell you is that DirecTV TiVo is designed and built for DirecTV only. It DOES NOT record cable or over the air broadcasts, it DOES NOT support networking (a fantastic feature for getting your schedule via Internet and sharing shows between multiple TiVos in a household) and, because it doesn't support networking, it also doesn't support the Home Media Option (which allows you to stream audio and images from your PC to your TiVo). It also doesn't support web based scheduling requests or the soon to be released TiVo-to-Go. These are all features that are central to the TiVo culture and I'm amazed that DirecTV has crippled their version of the TiVo service. I'd happily pay out the few bucks a month to add a DirecTV unit to my TiVo subscription, but DirecTV doesn't allow for it.

The long and short of it is that this is not a fully enabled TiVo and there isn't much you can do about it. If you just want a PVR with a nice interface, this is probably it. But if you want TiVO, as in ALL of TiVo, then skip these direcTV units, buy a regular TiVo and hook it up to you current satellite receiver. Not only can you record over-the-air or cable this way, but you get every one of the TiVo functions that the folks at TiVo have thoughtfully built into thier units.
Horrendous Quality Control . The concept of integrating DirecTV twin tuners with digital recording capabilities is brilliant, and the user friendliness of these machines is quite good considering the sophisticated technology. But I've only been able to experience it for about six hours before the units fail. Hard drives malfunction, tuners go out; I'm waiting for my third unit. My father has had three bad Philips DSR 7000 before giving up & buying a Hughes unit that has functioned for some time now. The warranty is terrible; 90 days and you have to pay the shipping. Philips should not have put their name on these machines, which all appear identical (RCA, Hughes, Philips) from the same joynt mfr. in Mexico. Mine came from the Philips Employee Store & I'm loyal, but this is pathetic.
Great idea - dual receivers - drops second line repeatedly . Well, at first this product was great. Dual receivers worked with my multi-switch and i was able to watch one show while recording another.

For some reason, one of the satellite lines in keeps dropping. The hookups are good and the signal strength continues to show all of the same strengths as the working tuner (they are shown on the screen side by side). However, on a daily basis - I have to reset the receiver (without adjusting any wires) or continue to try reacquiring the information on both inputs.

I really do like the other features of the unit having had a Sony TIVO unit that also had some common flaws. The comment about the slow screens and transitions is accurate. The response of the unit is a little slow and from what I understand, this feature is improved with more expensive units having faster (ie. more expensive) processors.

For the price, I think I paid $79 for the unit while signing a 12-month contract, (my DirecTV contract had already expired) this would be a great unit.

This is the fourth DirecTV receiver in the house (since it is dual - it is really the fourth and fifth receiver with the dual switch purchased from Radio Shack). If the second line didn't drop periodically and regularly - this would be five stars at the current price point.

Does the job and well... . First off, i am a cisco guy, i work with their products on a daily basis. Although does box here is pretty good for the monies worth. You can down load the latest SDM (GUI Management Software) and have this up and running (and pretty secured) in a matter of minutes.
For first time users, my advise...Read the manual, try out the SDM and read line for line what the SDM tells/asks you. don't go clicking on next next next as if it's a microsoft application. Take your time and follow the SDM and you will get the results that you desire.

:)

Professional quality network device for the Home or small office . Works great, tons of features and options. However, the Cisco 871 router isn't for everyone. You should have some experience working with Cisco's IOS software. Otherwise you may find yourself feeling a little frustrated.

Cons Review
Web Interface written by Monkey . Thank any god you like that Cisco eventually purchased Linksys. Linksys knows how to create a usuable interface. Cisco makes quality hardware... Marry the two and you should get a really great kid... the 871W is a solid WAP with some truly nice features... that's impossible to configure unless you have a freaking degree in Cisco. A drunk, blind, retarded monkey could have written a better Web interface for configuring the wireless side of things. I've never used such a worthless interface in my life. Pull out your console cable and save yourself the hassle.

Microsoft Cert'd for Windows Fax Server . Bought this to run in the corporate Windows Server 2003 fax server since we were having problems with the stock modem from Dell dropping some fax transmissions. So far, so good, just pricey in this day and age.
User 56KV.92 Performance pro Modem Rohs Controller Pci Reviews
100% Reliable Real Modem . The 3CP5610A (005610-01) 56K Performance Pro Modem (PCI Internal) is a fantastic modem. It is not a cheap winmodem. Here in Albuquerque,NM the phone lines are beginning to deteriorate. This is the only modem that connects at the maximum line level of 49.2 Kbaud. I bought one for my wife in August and now wish to add one to my 4 GB E6850 Core Duo 2 3.15 GHz machine. I detest the fact that the telecommunications companies in this area are charging $50.00 to $75.00 USD/month to connect at 7 Mbaud. I really don't need to download music and videos but I need an excellent and reliable connection. I recommend this modem as a backup for cable modems. When Broadband over Powerline connectivity comes here I will still be using this fantastic tool as a backup.
User 56KV.92 Performance pro Modem Rohs Controller Pci Opinions
Works OK Not great . I am on a very old ATT phone line and my other modem kept dropping the line, read good reviews on this one and it does not drop the line as often, but connects at a slower speed. Was going to send it back, but decided it was better to stay connected at any speed, 21,6 than be in the middle of a pogo game and the line to drop. I called USR and they were not any help in getting a higher connect speed. It also takes a long time to get connected in the first place. ATT does not offer DSL in my area, they had rather spend their money buying other phone companies than take care of the customers they already have.
Excellant Modem . This is my second purchase of this modem as the first was fried by a near by lightening strike. After trying several modems with poor results, this modem gave the best performance with quick connections and never a dropped line. The transaction was perfect and I received the shipment even before the promised delivery date.
US Robotics 5610C Internal Fax Modem . This modem works well, but somewhat on the expensive side. Kind of been a fan of US Robotics as over the years as I have had several. All have worked without issue, easy to set up. Getting hard to find an external fax modem these days. Apparently fax modems are going the way of the dinosaur. But some people still do not have email capability and I am requested to send by fax, so I purchased for insurance in my new Windows 7 computer. It requires a standard pci slot. I would have prefered an external as was my last unit. I like the lights to verify what is going on. But none were available except for serial input. Most computers no longer have serial ports including mine.

This modem comes with basic Phone Tools software. It works well for what I am asking of it. But for some, it may not have enough features. Check closely and check specifications.

No problems here . I purchased this to use with a Dell D600 running Windows XP SP3. I was worried about the age and compatibility of this laptop but the Wi-Fi adapter installed without difficulty and now the laptop has very convenient wireless Internet. I appreciate the size of the adapter which makes it possible to leave it plugged in while transporting the unit without fear of damaging the USB port.
