Quick Start Guide

This review is from : Ubiquiti Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router PowerAPN
Great Router for Power Users . This is not a router for beginners. The AirOS that ships with it uses iptables for the firewall, and by default everything is completely open. If you are not intimately comfortable with using iptables, this router will be tough to configure securely.

I ended up flashing DD-WRT to the router and haven't looked back. You need to pay for the Professional activation due to the radios they use in this, but DD-WRT makes configuration much easier. The range is excellent, I now cover the range that 3 WRT54GL's used to cover, with just the PowerAP N.

It uses an Atheros AR7240 390mhz processor and 32MB RAM, which is plenty fast for my 20Mbps internet connection.
Ubiquiti Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router PowerAPN Reviews
Great performance; great range and throughput . I have a 3 story/22 room house on a .8 acre property with a couple of outbuildings and have been searching hard for a wireless router that can cover most of this house and area. Many "experts" have told me that it would be impossible to cover this large an area and be able to penetrate 5-6 walls old Victorian plaster walls with a single device. The experts recommended at least 2 access points and some recommended more than that for reliable coverage. Well, the experts were WRONG! This PowerAP N router covers my whole house, the outbuildings and almost the entire .8 acre with 5 bars of signal on my Mac laptop and has throughput that is within 90-100% of my ISP's maximum 5.2Mbps(DSL) input stream.

In addition to the great range, I have not experienced any variable signal strengths, variable ping times, variable network throughputs or interference from the 15 other wireless networks in my neighborhood, as I did with my previous routers, a Cisco E4200 and a Netgear RangeMax. The PowerAP N's much greater signal strength and 5-6dBi gain antennas seem to overwhelm any competing signals from my neighbors.

This router is a little harder to configure, but it has many more configurable items, an advanced tool set (like a graphical and quantitative signal scanner for other networks or sources of noise in the 2.4GHz band), and can save/restore several backup configuration files if you are the experimental type.

If you have a big property to cover with wifi and don't want a complex collection of devices to administer, run, don't walk, to this Ubiquiti PowerAP N router/access point.
Ubiquiti Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router PowerAPN Opinions
Awesome Coverage . I am a professional wireless consultant and have used tons of products from Ubiquiti. Just installed one of these two days ago and had no problems with the antennas. They do not need to be over tightened just snug. The range is awesome and they are simple and easy to install. The software is powerful and have an amazing range of features. I have a whole neighborhood wired with Ubiquiti products and have found them to be fantastic and work great with not a single failure from any of the equipment.
I wish I could give this thing 100 stars . The Ubiquiti Ultra-Long Range WiFi Router PowerAPN has exceeded all my expectations. I have to admit that I was somewhat hesitant to buy it for a couple reasons, the main one being that I had never heard of Ubiquiti before. I spent a lot of time looking at bigger names like Cisco or Netgear etc... but none of them had the features that this was claiming to have at anywhere near the same price point. My second hesitation was some of the reviews I had read. Specifically about the antenna not tightening. Well, I decided that the price and features were too good to pass up and I'd take a chance on it.When it arrived I was giddy like I always am when I get new hardware. I opened the box and just took in the sight of this thing for a couple seconds. Is it possible for a router to be sexy? I didn't think so until now. I then pulled everything out of the box and checked on the antenna. I am very pleased to say that I had no issues, they screwed in nice and tight and I was able to position them in almost any arrangement possible. No problems there whatsoever. That was a bit of relief. Now to get this thing configured and plugged in.Configuration was sooooo easy. Compared to basically every other router I've ever dealt with, setup could not have been easier. I had this thing ready to go in... maybe 5 minutes. I plug it in, replacing a piece of crap Linksys that you could barely get a signal from 100 feet away with and am blown away when I see that no matter where you are on our 5 acre property you can see the signal from this thing! Granted, it's not a full strength signal but that's okay since I don't think anyone needs to be connected at the farthest corners of our parking lot. I have literally had 0 issues with this thing in the now 1 month that I've had it and I can say with absolute certainty the next time I need networking equipment the first company I'm looking at will be Ubiquiti. It also comes with a bunch of awesome built in tools like a Site Survey and Speed Test and some others. It supports VLANs. If you have an FCC license you can even boost the signal strength above the otherwise legal limit! This thing seriously rocks. If you're thinking about buying it don't even hesitate, it's worth every penny. Conclusion: I want this thing to have my babies.
WOW . This thing has incredible range and is so easy to setup. I used it as an AP and now I get 5bars of useable wifi al over the house and outside by the pool. So easy to setup and simply blows away my E1200 so I took it back.
Good but..... . Just got one and it has excellent range, throughput and even looks good there are just two problems.
1 the ethernet is only 100m not gigabit I knew that before I got it but I still wish they had gone with gigabit.
2 The antenna connectors are loose, one is so loose that the antenna flops over to side and won't stay in position. I know it is just a nut on the inside that needs to be tightened but I can't get to it.

It still gets 4 stars because the range, throughput, options and user interface are great, it would get 5 if not for the antenna issue

Best AP for Home and Small Office . You can waste your time buying all these professional devices, or consumer end Linksys/Cisco, Netgear, Belkin products, but I would suggest to save time and frustration just buy this bad boy. Compared to all other devices prices this one beats them all, and with the AirOs built in you get great features. I personally get about a block radius of good WiFi strength out of this, I install them in residential clients all the time. For a professional network guy, I do recommend paying for some DD-WRT on this thing. If you know what one is you probably know the other. It's well worth the money to activate this puppy and make it solid as a rock with all the other features of DD-WRT.

Cons Review
Stay Away Until They Fix the Antenna Connectors . There is no doubt that this access point puts out more power than any other wireless router that I've ever found. And it has fantastic firmware that offers customization and features that you simply cannot find on any other product. Heck, it even includes a spectrum analyzer so you can look at the 2.4 Ghz signals around you and find the clearest channel to set-up your network on. Their spectrum analyzer picks up all signals (including non 802.11), so you can be sure that your channel is actually clear.

There is one big BUT! And it is a big one.

There is a problem with the antenna connectors. When you screw an antenna on them, they come loose. And if you keep trying to screw the antenna connector on them, the internal leads connecting the antenna connectors twist and become damaged, preventing any of that power from getting to the antennas.

I tried two of these units and had to return both of them because the antenna connectors came loose. I posted to Ubiquiti's online forums, but so far, nobody from Ubiquity has responded. Ubiquiti's online forums have a similar complaint from a guy who bought 10 of them and found several with loose antenna connectors.

Although I repeatedly reached out to Ubiquiti (by e-mail, forum, and telephone) and asked if they were aware of the problem or making any efforts to fix it, they denied knowing anything about it (even though its posted in their own technical support forum) and here at Amazon.

And so, I urge you to wait. I suspect that eventually, Ubiquiti will fix this problem (even though they don't acknowledge its existence). And when they do, this will be an awesome product.
Not for average users . Used in "Router" mode.

Pros:
* Range is excellent

Cons:
* Connectors become loose very easily (manageable through opening the unit, but a hassle)
* AirOS is definitly not geared for average users.
* No default basic set of firewall rules.
* Must be very savvy with IPTables, otherwise it's just useless hardware.
* VLan not supported yet. Promised in the next update of AirOS.

PS: Using it in "Bridge" mode was just messed up. Software not very stable in my opinion.
no documentation poor performance . do not buy this product... it says it has 1000mW but it doesn't. does not go 100 feet. (signal strenght shows it goes far but the actual connection and speed are horrible). no documentation, no support, bad antenna connectors. unsatisfied...
