Awesome switch with all the features! . After having used high end managed switches at the office and low dollar desktop switches at home, I purchased this Netgear GS108T so that I could use its port mirroring feature to make life easier when doing network software development at home, and I am truly impressed with this Netgear GS108T.
If you want advanced managed functionality, you can connect to the web-management page and set up anything from per-port MAC or IP filtering ACLs, rate limiting, and port mirroring, to NTP synchronization, SNMP management, or even link aggregation. The feature-set is way too rich for home needs - but perfect for business - unless you are a geek like me and love to play with cool toys! If you don't known what a managed switch is, you can still plug this thing in and use it just like a dumb desktop switch.
I definitely recommend the Netgear GS108T to anyone who is looking for a solid gigabit switch with advanced features on a smaller budget.

Robust Construction but Klutzy to upgrade . The Netgear people love to build their switches in tight little, flat metal cases. This one has that same family profile. This model is not a "dumb" style switch. You need to program it. This can be great if you need those features. If not, buy their other model without the programing. The problem you may run into, is that the firmware inside the unit as delivered is several versions out-of-date. The update process is truly a pain in the butt, because the process is not intuitive, and the device does not indicate its status consistently. Once you stumble through this process, the device works great, and may protect your computers from malware and control data flow to different devices and services better than a dumb switch. In function, the GS108T-NAS is fast and effective, and appears to be built robustly. Highly recommended.

Excellent fast responding Gig switch for Media center . I spent a lot of time trying to find a Gigabit switch that actually publishes performance benchmarks specifically for a switch that is affordable. I tried connecting a 3D-TV, PS3 and a 3D Blu-ray over a high-end wireless network, but I could not get reliable bandwidth when watching VUDU or Netflix.
With this switch, there is no congestion and it is very fast and reliable (of course it is wired now too). You can use a browser to the switch and see detailed statistics on each port including transmit errors,receive errors, collisions and a lot more. If you use the wrong or a bad Ethernet cable, you can easily troubleshoot the problem to the exact cable and port. It supports Jumbo frames, port mirroring, QoS, VLAN and more.

fast switch that does the job . I previously had a gigabit D-Link switch next to my router. there was lag and slow transfer times. had to reboot every week. installed the netgear and all my problems were solved. right out of the box it worked flawlessly.

Plug it in and it works . I installed it as the fourth Netgear switch on my home LAN. Up and running from the minute it was installed. No muss, no fuss.
Great Consumer Grade Switch . In the early days of our home network (we're talking a network behind MS Proxy 2.0 connecting to the Internet via bonded dialup) I went through a great many switches. Belkin, Netgear, D-Link, several Linksys, and probably others I don't even remember. All of them had a relatively short lifespan, and even when they did work, they were plagued by reboots, hangs, dead ports, and the like.
I eventually convinced myself that the "consumer grade" switch was just too low quality for my needs - OK, for my demands - and that I would need to take at least a small step up in quality if I wanted anything resembling consistent uptime.
I was a big fan of using HP network gear at work, so I took my small step up in the form of the HP ProCurve Switch 408. It was an unmanaged 8-port 10/100 switch that offered half-/full-duplex 10/100 auto-sensing and ProCurve Auto-MDIX on every port. It's small, elegant, and ran my home (wired) LAN for over 5 years. In that time it never had any issue that I was aware of. It restored my faith in small switches. I was beginning to think they had a finite lifespan based on the number of packets.
Obviously 10/100 is enough for a home network. Last time I counted we only had 23 nodes (most of them wireless), and our data traffic has mostly been limited to web browsing, and hosting our personal e-mail and web sites.
However, things are starting to change. Between the four of us, we use Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube at least a few times a week. We occasionally use Skype. It seems everyone who comes over has an iPad, laptop, or WiFi enabled game or device. So, I thought it was time to get something with a little manageability. I think I found what I'm looking for in the Netgear Gigabit GS108T-200NAS 8 port switch. Very similar in size to the ProCurve, with a featureset way too long for home needs. In other words - perfect. The unit comes with web-based management, 8 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, jumbo frame support, port trunking capability, QoS, VLANs, PoE, traffic prioritization, port monitoring, SNMP support, NTP support, port authentication, ACL filtering - you get the point. I picked it up from Amazon.com for $90.00, and I've been playing with it for an hour and am already impressed.
Of course I only get 6 MB from my horrible ISP (Cox) on a good day, so I'm basically using my 1000 MB throughput to travel the 6 feet from my workstation to my DNS server. My old switch was hardly a bottleneck, but I am liking the new switch.
So, I'm back to "consumer" grade gear. Now to wait and see if it lasts more than 6 months.

Cons Review
so far a nightmare . so far, this switch has been miserable - I've contacted NetGEAR several times and they can't make it work correctly either - I've flashed the firmware to the latest version, and they've remote'd in to the unit and can duplicate the problem - It's so close to the perfect portable switch for Wireshark otherwise
I need a managed or smart switch (with port mirroring) to monitor Wireshark captures - I can make it do just enough so that I don't send it back, but I SURE don't recommend it - NetGEAR however, was extremely nice and actually very helpful - I guess I'm going to let them replace it because I need it so badly (I do a lot of SIP based installs and need to monitor SIP registration requests and SIP server replies, etc.)
Anyway, it would be perfect if it worked correctly (and as advertised) - I won't go in to the problems - too detailed for here, but I sure hope the replacement works better than this one...

Randomly stalls traffic for no apparent reason . I use Remote Desktop to access a Windows workstation over the LAN. For no apparent reason, this switch just slugs-out and stalls LAN traffic. Sometimes power-off reset fixes it, sometimes you just have to put up with it until it clears itself. (Example: I click on a drop-down menu and nothing happens for 2, 3, up to 5 seconds. Or, I'll be moving the cursor across the screen and it stalls mid-way. Keyboard inputs aren't echoed for seconds at a time). The latest firmware seems to make things worse. In everyday use, you wouldn't notice packets getting stalled, but when you're using Remote Desktop, it's massively annoying. I found an old Fe108 at a yard sale, swapped it for the GS108T, and haven't had any troubles since. Bad switch or bad firmware. I'll never know.
Quality Issues with two orders. . I ordered a switch.. Took it out of the pristine looking packaging and heard a clank when i picked it up. It powered up, but shut itself off. I investigated more and the heatsink was floating in the metal case. I was annoyed, but amazon had a replacement out in short order. Unfortunately the replacement arrived in the same condition. I realize that a little heat sink grease/adhesive would fix it up, but at this point I'm going to try my luck with another product.
