VMP70 vs WDTVHD Live . This review compares the Viewsonic VMP70 and WD TV HD Live, which I both have. First off, I only want to archive dvd movies with the vob file structure in them. The VMP70 will play vob files, with the menu and chapter system working, just like a real dvd. Archived movies that are unprotected (without CSS) will play very well. Protected movies (with CSS) will not play properly. WDTVHD Live, will play vob files (in one continuous stream) but will not play the menu and chaptering structure. If you pause or stop (WD), you can start where you left off. If you jump from one vob file to another, WD will ask if you want OK to continue or cancel to restart. WD support says the work around here is to create a playlist of the chapters, vob or avi files within a folder. I have not tried this, but it still defeats the purpose of the menu and chaptering structure.
There are software out there that can convert vob files to another file system, like avi, in a reduced file size and still play very well. Some software can break the avi file into chapters. I have tried it. Works well. You don't have to do that with the vmp70, because of the goto function. GoTo function / playback search: by title (if active in the movie), by chapter (if active in the movie), by time (very useful). VMP70 will play any file, may it be vob, avi, mov, mp4, etc one after the other in one sequence if you choose to play the file directly, within the directory structure. The trick here is to create a folder for each movie that has divided vob or avi or mov, etc files in it, so they don't mix. WD will play one file at a time then stop within a folder. There might be an option for WD to play continuously, I have not explored that yet.
VMP70 reads the directory tree, folders and subfolders. If there are several subfolders within a tree, you have to go "back button" several times to go back to the root directory of the connected drive. Or hit "Home" to start all over. WD works similarly. The WD has a text search function which makes it faster to go to a particular file or movie title.
VMP70 remote control works farther and is more responsive, and may not be directly aimed at the player. Has more direct functions, volume control. WD remote: very weak, has to be near and aimed directly. Fewer functions. VMP70 can go 32x FF or Rev. Has slow mo. WD can only go 16x FF/Rev. No slow mo. Both has zoom
in/out and pan function. Advice for WD media player owners: Make sure battery polarity is installed correctly on the remote control. Reverse battery installation will smoke it. Happened to a friend who accidentally installed batteries the wrong way. Apparently, the WD remote does not have reverse polarity diode protection if batteries are installed the wrong way.
WD Live has network and wireless (with usb wifi dongle) capabiltiy. On VMP70, none. But I will try to connect a usb to RJ45 network dongle or usb wifi dongle to see if it will work. On VMP70, I hooked up an unpowered usb 4 port hub. On the hub, connected two 8GB usb stick, and one unpowered 500GB external usb drive. They all were read by the player. Media files on them were read and played accordingly without error and degradation. On that usb port, 3 drives were read with the drive names displayed on screen. WD will not read all usb devices connected to a usb hub. In my case, WD only read one device (I guess the strongest of the three).
I like both players. WD having network capability and some internet access to some sites like Pandora, maybe youtube if it still works. You can transfer files between folders on usb port and network on WD; search function. VMP70 for playing menu and chapter system, goto function, ability to read usb devices connected to a hub, more remote control function. Both players have their own strengths and weaknesses. You decide what you want. Both are keepers for me, one upstairs, one downstairs.

Viewsonic VMP70 1080p Full HD Digital Media Player Reviews
works flawlessly . i bought this last summer primarily for my father who's not computer-competent in the slightest but wanted to enjoy the ease of use that comes with having all of your media on a ridiculously small thumb-drive or external HDD.
it works flawlessly. unlike previous statements by someone who said it doesn't play MKV, i can tell you personally that's NOT TRUE, IT DOES PLAY ".MKV" FILES. it plays them perfectly and they look spectacular on my father's non-HD TV. no stuttering, no crashes.
i was worried initially since there weren't any reviews upon purchasing but was very relieved and impressed when put through it's paces. setup is idiot-proof and it reads all the media off my 500gb 'Passport' no problem. it has made watching movies, uTube clips, *any* video you can download off the web watchable on any TV you have. period.
im so satisfied with it, i've even considered purchasing another one for another TV in the house. i can't believe ViewSonic isn't advertising this.
some con's though:
- the cord on the power plug is pretty short so be prepared to use an extension.
- the remote control is your ONLY way to navigate the interface so (obviously) it's imperative you DON'T LOSE IT.

Viewsonic VMP70 1080p Full HD Digital Media Player Opinions
Love my VMP70 . I love this little device. So far it has flawlessly played any format I've thrown at it, including .mkv. I repeat, MKV files are definitely supported by the VMP70. I don't really have a lot of technical things to say, just that pairing this device up with an external hard drive is an excellent method of viewing pretty much anything on a TV or projector. It's hooked up to my 55" Vizio and I couldn't be happier! Everything looks and sounds great. I will second some of the other reviewers' sentiments about the remote. It takes a little time to master and the buttons are tiny. However, there's pretty much a button for any function you could think of.

Almost 5 stars . I am very pleasd with this products performance so far. The only negative I see is that it limits the size of input it will handle to to only 8GB. I was hoping to put all my home movies on 32GB or 64 GB flashdrives and play them through this machine. But when I tried to access the 32GB flashdrive it would not recognize it. After calling tech support i learned that it will only see up to 8GB. SO iguess it depends on what you are looking to play through it. I usualy put 6-8 movies on it and it works great for that.
Neat little package . The product performs as advertised, playing every AVI, MOV, and MKV I threw at it, including files over 2GB. Playback was smooth. Didn't have a chance to test subtitles. Interface is logical and uncluttered.
I'd give it five stars if not for two things: 1) Like most such players, it can't fast-forward AVI files faster than 4x; 2) it would've been way more convenient if one of the two USB ports was in the front of the unit to make plugging flash drives easier.

Awesome player. It DOES play MKV. . I bought this as a Christmas present for my wife who watches a lot of videos online on laptop. I am really happy with this awesome player. It seems that it can consume whatever media file you feed to it, including the RMVB and MKV. To my surprise it can even play MTS files from my Canon camcorder.
Super satisfied . This product is everything it promised to be. Glad I made the purchase. I've been using it more for video, and the playback is excellent. Extremely easy to connect via HDMI, and move from room to room. User friendly menu.
Excellent Media Player . This Video Media player does exactly what the advertisement says. The quality is really good. All media I have tried works except for 3gp phone video files. Because of the ease of use I was able to connect everything to the TV and make it work without even reading the manual. This is an exceptionally great product. I am very pleased.
Works Great! . Really shines on digital photo display. Plays all the important video files from your computer! Excellent remote control.
Cons Review
Not so great . I have not been that happy with this media player. I bought it because it has 2 usb ports to connect 2 HDDs. The player will suddenly stop by itself; the remote many times will not work. The picture can also become shakey at times. I would recommend paying a little more to get a better functioning unit.
