Switching is easy. When used for sharing a USB printer, the switching is based on a First-Come-First-Serve basis. It automatically switches to the next one in the queue when the current printing is complete.

Handy for sharing a drive between two PCs . This is a convenient way to switch a drive between two PCs. Just to be clear, it does NOT connect the drive to both PCs at the same time.
The software utility loads and its icon sits in the taskbar on each PC/laptop. To switch, just click on the icon on the PC you want to switch the drive to, and select ok. That PC 'pulls' the USB connection from the other PC, and Windows detects it has the USB drive connected, just as with any other USB drive when you plug it into a USB port. The other PC similarly detects the USB drive has been 'unplugged'.

Works well enough . It is supposed to be auto-switching, but the documentation says that you have to click on the icon to switch (not auto-switching?). Green icon means it is switched to your computer, yellow means it is switched to the other computer (but not busy), red means the printer is busy. Did not sound like auto-switching to me. However, if you print while your icon is yellow, you will get an error message then 5 seconds later it will start printing. Yes, it does auto-switching, but you have to look at an error message while it switches.

Wonderful product . This switch saves me a lot of hassle. I can now print from any computer without switching the cable.
Superb Device . I just received the switch. Very easy to install. Works great from the get-go with my new Windows 7 Netbook and my Windows XP laptop directing print traffic to my all in one HP Officejet 6500. Fully automatic. Make sure to select the printer you are using through the utility; otherwise it will not know which printer to send to. The Amazon Marketplace vendor - CableOnline, delivered as promised and they have good customer support. A MUST BUY if you need an A/B switch - worth the money.
Works Great! . This item works great! I just hooked up two Mac G4 Powerbooks to my HP printer. It does indeed switch automatically. Be sure to add the "APSharing.app" to your login items in "Accounts" in System Preferences if the installer didn't do it automatically.
shring printer switch review . We first looked at a switch that we had to manually switch the printer from one computer to the other. Then we noticed the automatic one, higher priced, but still under $25. We bought it, and it works like a charm. When either of us decides to print something, we just tell it to print. If it had most recently printed for the other computer, we hear a little plunk in literally about 1 second, and it's switched itself over to print for the other of us. It's absolutely great.

Not functional . While this switch does allow you to connect two computers to a single device (in my case a printer), it does NOT function as a "true automatic sharing" switch. In fact, I haven't been able to use the printer at all through the second port no matter what I try. I've switched the computers on each side; I've removed the cable from the "working" side to see if it would then let the other side function; I've pushed both of the little unlabeled buttons; nothing I've tried has been of any use.The product came without any documentation whatsoever, so there was no help there. It MAY be a functional item for someone else, but the one I received did not work for me. I tried it with two Dell notebooks and one Toshiba notebook, all running Windows 7, and a Brother multifunction printer.
This evil little device will drive you crazy. . I needed to share one printer with my two computers. Turns out that's a lot harder than it sounds. Unfortunately this device doesn't live up to its promise of a flawless solution. It caused my nice new Toshiba laptop (with Windows 7) to create a duplicate 'copies' of the printer's driver in my Control Panel. My computer would automatically download a duplicate driver from the web without asking me - sometimes I would end up with 3 copies in there, but only 1 would be 'active' and I could never tell which that one was (it changed frequently), so most of my efforts to print would get lost in limbo. Deleting the duplicate drivers was a waste of time - they would reappear within 5 minutes. And reloading the original driver and starting fresh also failed. The problem went away as soon as I unplugged this evil little device and removed its infuriating software from my PC. Keep looking for a better option than this one.
