TP-Link TL-WA701ND 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Access Point, with 1x 3dBi Antenna

This review is from : TP-Link WL TL-WA701ND 150Mbps AP
Does what it says says what it does . This is a reasonable Access Point. If you don't know the difference between a router and an Access Point (AP) then this may not be what you are looking for. However, if you want to add additional coverage to your wireless footprint and want to bridge clients right on to you your already existing network, this does the job well.

Setup required setting the IP address of my laptop manually, then connecting to the AP's web configuration page, and setting up the parameters such as SSID, WPA/WEP/WPA (radius). The fact that it can do Radius authentication is a plus.

Coverage is ok with the built in antenna, it has a standard threaded SMA connector so you can add a higher gain one if you're trying to cover a larger room. Its compatible with iPads, Macs, Windows, and Linux machines using 802.11n adapters and will fall back to 802.11g if necessary.

It is pretty cost effective for an AP and its software is GPL'd so you can get a copy from the web site (although I didn't look at what it would take to rebuild/re-install).

If it had a bit more range with the standard antenna I'd give it 5 stars, as it is you can easily cover 1200 - 1500 sq ft of a large conference center or one floor of a house.
TP-Link WL TL-WA701ND 150Mbps AP Reviews
Just hope you don't need customer service! . I received my TP-Link WL TL-WA701ND within a few days after ordering it. Using the instruction manual, I attempted to set it up to act as a repeater in my living room (for the TV) for my router which is located in another room. The instructions in the manual are meager at best. After many attempts without luck, I decided to call customer service. It took many, many tries to get through on the telephone, as their system will not put you on hold, it states that all agents are currently busy so call back later, and hangs up! So, it took me several hours to reach them, including many tries where I reached a busy signal, not the recording. I finally was able to speak with a woman whose English was almost incomprehensible. Even though I dialed a number in the U.S. - I reached the Hong Kong office apparently. Instead of trying to explain to me what I needed to know, she said she would email the setup instructions to me. I attempted to give her my email address several times, apparently without success, as the email never came. Fortunately, I was able to get the unit working on my own. Sheesh!
TP-Link WL TL-WA701ND 150Mbps AP Opinions
Great! . TP-Link is inexpensive and that might make you wonder about the quality. I am not sure what the future holds, but I am very impressed with these routers and wireless access points today. I have purchased four TP-Link devices and have been recommending them to people as well. I found the setup very simple and the web interface just as good as any other company. I have owned Linksys, Buffalo, D-Link, and NetGear devices. This one is just as good as any other I have owned and better than most of them. I have not had one long enough yet (just a couple of months) now, but so far it could be the best - given price and features.Feel free to ask questions via comments on this review. I am glad to improve my review based on questions.
This is a "simple to set up" wonderful AP . If this unit is running hot it has a problem, I know this because I had to send the first one back, but the second...
This AP has more capabilities than a Swiss Army knife! I needed the actual AP function, but it can also be set up as a repeater, Universal repeater, multi-SSID, bridge and even client mode using WISP. Each of these functions is outlined nicely in the instructions, with pictures to show the use, just in case, you are not wireless savvy. I don't think I have ever set up a wireless AP with such ease! The good range and nicely written instructions, more than met my expectations...and my expectations were pretty high.
Perfect . It works perfect, and really fast! If you plug the cables, then it just works. But the configuration needs direct connection between computer and the AP, which is not possible in my case, because I use the MBA.
Besides of this, the manual is good, and the speed is good.
Does what it advertised - Limited Range . Does all the function listed well. Used it as an AP client and Wifi Range Extender. Only issue is that the range is limited. I can use several brands of standard USB WAP connection from anywhere in my house, but this only could talks about half the distance.
GREAT PRODUCT & CHEAP! . Great product, flexible, easy to configure & the instructions are limited but get the job done. I don't know what all the fuss has been about "hard to configure."
Tp-Link - it works well as a Client for my TV . Got this item to enable Web content on my new LG550, such as Netflix and Picasa. It works well, streaming movies and pictures using my wireless network. Unless you are very familiar with AP equipment, setup may take some effort, but it is not that difficult.
For my purpose I had to set it up as a client, and paper manual/CD manual guides you through the first few steps, but not all the way, and not specifically for the client configuration. I missed security step the first time and had to re-configure AP again.
Use Tp-Link support website to guide you through the setup: search for "How to configure 11N AP in Client mode"
Also In the LAN option I Selected Dynamic IP to get IP address from DHCP (my wireless router does that). If you mess something up and can't connect back to the AP there is alway reset button. :)
Overall seems like a good product for my application.

Cons Review
Set up is not home user friendly . Involves assigning a static IP address, knowing your Access Point's MAC Address, non-intuitive network settings, and detailed instructions for use with Windows XP or Vista...too bad we are all using Windows 7 now. If this sounds daunting - avoid. This was put into my house by a home theater expert. It spontaneously dropped connection to the whole set up after about a week, and he couldn't figure out how to get it working again. I consider myself an advanced home user, and I can handle most of my own network problems. Though I am an admitted Apple hater, if there is one way Apple has influenced me, it's that I try to avoid non-intuitive/frustrating setups these days. I am running 2 PCs, 1 Mac, 2 Home theaters (Roku etc), and a wireless security cam, off of an Apple Time Capsule. Our Android, iPhone, and Kindle Fire hop on there as well. I was hoping to mess with the TP Link myself and make it a repeater. After fumbling with it for 45min, I decided to buy an Airport Express. My concern is, if I spent the extra time configuring this repeater, and something went wrong (as it already has), I would have another 1hr project (at least) on my hands sometime in the future. For a repeater, I would recommend a wall plug Netgear repeater vs. Airport Express.
DOA . Opened the box, product looked OK, thought it should be a simple process of connecting this AP to the router, and to login using the IP address from the directions ... HA! Double HA!! Could never connect to the thing. After several tries, I gave up. I figured that it If it won't work now, it will never work at all, and even if it did, who would want to try 20 login attempts before you can actually login? Also, the unit became VERY HOT while it was plugged in, so it must have been DOA all along ... Why didn't the QC dept. catch it before it left the factory? Sloppy work. Item returned the next day. I could not get this thing out of the house and to the post office fast enough!
