Impressive Performance and Great Value (B/G protocol only) . Synopsis of Brief Ownership:
* Package arrived on time and well packed by DBRoth.
* Supplied CD did not install the 8187 Realtek driver. Had to plug in the adapter and let Win XP find it to install the driver. Procedure had to be used on 2 different computers.
* This is a B/G unit only and does not incorporate N like Alfa's B/G/N unit. I've been informed that particular unit (-nt5) does not perform as well. Perhaps having to deal with 3 different protocols, something was given up. Also, the -nt5 model is really not a 2000mw device since 1000mw is the FCC legal limit. The -nt5 model allows momentary bursts of energy, but not for continuous connection. I'll leave that to the RF or Realtek experts to comment on.
* Placed unit both inside and outside of both first and second story windows. The unit easily doubled to tripled the available APs.
* Marginal signals, 1 to 2 bars, jumped to the max of 5 bars.
* The great signal quality may be attributable to no antenna cable attenuation loss since both the adapter and antenna are internally embedded along with power supplied by dual USB connections.
* For outdoor use, the user will have to seal against the elements better than the Alfa design. While adequate, the USB connection is susceptible to the effects of the elements. In a marine environment, I recommend sealing the interior USB connection with liquid electrical tape or a corrosion inhibitor and sealing the access panel with silicone or sail tape to prevent water intrusion.
* Caveat: The user must keep in mind that while this unit dramatically improves the ability to reach out and touch, it is also important to know that the other end must be able to handshake as well which impacts ability to retain a solid connection.

Alfa 1000mW USB Antenna . The instructions leave a lot for you to figure out for yourself. somewhat difficult for a lay person. Once I got it up and running it made a big difference taking a 60-70% signal and boosting it to 90-100%. The connection cable requires two USB ports to connect to. The cable is a good length for a truck or RV but too short for home use, if you need extra cable, it creates extra strain on your USB port. Be careful what length of extra cable you choose.

Couldn't be more pleased . I bought this for a school customer who has to support a building across the street. They had been using a standard wireless adapter at the far end, with a directional antenna at the main school, but this just wasn't cutting it. The Alfa was easy to install and resulted in excellent five-bar reception; I expected it to be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be that good.

Works great. . Stuck it on a pole outside my little metal box I lived in while in Africa, and it pulled in the wifi signal from a building a good 1000 feet away. Now that I am back in the states, I can sit in my car at mcdonalds, plug it into my macbook and do homework via the McDonalds wifi. This is great for me, since there are very few outlets inside McDonalds to hook up to, but I have the car adapter, so I can play for as long as I like!
Cons Review
It works...but for how long? . This wifi adapter increased the signals by 1-2 bars, and it captures many more networks than my indoor adapter with a 9 db panel antenna. It is highly directional. It works well when the antenna is pointed in the right direction. However, base on the design and material of this adapter, I just don't see how it will last very long in the sun and rain. The housing is plastic with no rubber gaskets to prevent water leaks. I also see the plastic breaking up in the hot California sun. BTW, this unit is much bigger than the picture appears. All in all, a decent product at a good price.UPDATE: Two days after I installed this unit, the part of the plastic housing where the metal screw clamps attach have broken off from the pressure of the clamps. If the body of the housing were made of metal, I'd give it 5 stars. With the cheap plastic housing, I have lowered it to 2.
