SMC Networks Worldwide EZ Card SMC9452TX-2 Copper Gigabit PCI Adapter SMC9452TX-2 Network Adapters - Wired
This review is from : Ez Card 10/100/1000MBPS Pci
Incredible deal works great . I have an older PCI AGP motherboard in this computer and installed Windows 7; my previous gigabit ethernet card didn't have drivers for it. Also I believe the PCI bus is just fast enough to drive the card at gigabit speeds (if some of the packet overhead is added on the card itself).
I wanted the cheapest good card I could find, because it's an older computer. I wanted gigabit because I often copy very large files across my LAN. Gigabit is great- I didn't even have to upgrade my old 100k cables to get the new speed, and file transfers are now pretty fast. Due to the sata drive transfer rates and operating system issues, I don't think a 10 gigabit lan would transfer files much faster (plus it's still pretty expensive). I wanted jumbo frames.
You can pay a way lot more for a PCI gigabit ethernet card, and I doubt the performance is significantly better. I wondered why there is such a huge price differential between apparently equivalent products.
I got this card and it installed real easy, although as I recall I had to hunt for the Windows 7 drivers on the internet (it didn't install correctly "plug and play" for me in 32 bit windows 7, although it is supposed to.)
It seems to run pretty fast- as fast as my old card that was an Intel server model. Also, it claims to do jumbo frames, which mostly much more expensive cards do, and which is essential to the highest transfer rates. I have not however timed the transfer rate.
The card has not given me any problems after a month of use.
The technical details appear at this time to be wrong- for a notebook computer! I believe this describes the product correctly (and the linked page has drivers too):

"The EZ Card 1000 is a high performance 32-bit 10/100/1000 Mbps copper Gigabit PCI interface card designed for network connectivity for home or office use. SMC9452TX-2 offers 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-configuration, cross-over detection, auto correction, and full duplex support to maximize the network's potential speed while accommodating the existing infrastructure. SMC9452TX-2's advanced features such as TCP and UDP Checksum Offload, Flow Control, VLAN, Jumbo Frame support ensures data integrity under heavy loading. Fully IEEE compliant and up to 10 times faster than Fast Ethernet, SMC9452TX-2 is an ideal Gigabit wired networking solution for home or office with Wake-On-LAN, remote wake-up support, Plug-and-play installation, and support for major operating systems."
If you need to find drivers, you can use the product code SMC9452TX-2 or the above link to find them.
This was fulfilled by electronica direct, even though it doesn't say so here, and they shipped the product fast and undamaged.
