This review is from : NETGEAR XEB1004 85 MBPS Powerline Ethernet Switch Kit
Hard to add to existing Powerline network . I have used powerline for several years.
I added a xe104 to my network last May.
It was fine & easy to do. I like the "Powerline" (ethernet over power line) system.
I wanted to buy just an additional xe104 but I wound up with the whole xeb1004 kit.
The newer software on this kit is plug n play ok but it took a long time to add my existing pieces.
My family tried to install this for hours while (I was at work) with no success.
The tech support was no help at all they just took the "CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG" approach.
Tech support had them changing components all around so the nodes of the system would be on the same electrical circuit.
My apartment is all on the same electrical phase and is essentially the same circuit.
This bad advise ruined my wife's day off and made a mess of all the computer stations in my home.
Configuring the expanded "Powerline" network and putting everybody's computer back to where they belong ruined my day off.
Also
I am not %100 confident there is encryption on the new system.
there was no facility to add a password for my network.
Have your eyes wide open when you buy this.
It can save you from running ethernet cable around your house, relying on WIFi or buying extra modems for other rooms but there is some reduction of bandwidth and it might not set up easy as pie.
Don't try to mix old and new components.
Best Buy is a great company... it's not Best Buy but Netgear that needs to improve customer service.
