Networking Over Existing Powerline

This review is from : Belkin F5D4071 Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit (White)
Wired Internet Connection . The only thing with this device is that you need to plug it directly into a wall socket, not a multi-outlet device. With that caveat, the device works great. I was having problems with my wireless N signal cutting out on me and it was driving me nuts. I looked at all of these devices available on Amazon and decided to go with one of the least expensive to see if it would work. Not only is it working, the status indicator shows a throughput speed of 100 Mbps. I don't have any way to check that, but it certainly seems to be better than my average wireless N connection (I would occasionally see throughput numbers over 110 Mbps with the N connection but not consistantly). It has also increased my download speed at least 4x what I was getting with the unreliable wireless connection. I am a happy laptop user now.

can't get the advertised data rate between rooms . While plugging it in is easy, getting it to work between my different rooms was a challenge and I ended up having to use a different power outlet than what I had intended. After I got the units talking to each other, the data rate was like 15 mbps and not the 85. (I wasn't expecting 85, but hopefully at least 50)

They also have REALLY bright LED's on them, illuminating the room at night which is kind of annoying.

Belkin F5D4071 Powerline Networking Adapter Starter Kit (White) Opinions
Powerline Networking works but just barely . I pored over reviews for the various Powerline Networking Adapters I could find, and this one (Belkin F5D4071) seemed like a good balance between positive reviews and a livable price. I had bought this to try and get better and more reliable speeds for my desk computer, about 20 feet from where my wifi router is located. I have a 25mbps internet connection, which is on the fast side, and its very reliable in speed as well. My wireless wifi connection (supposedly 54mbps) would only achieve about half of the speed (12mbps) I knew I could get with a wired connection, and the wifi was also very inconsistent, frequently even slower than that.

After receiving my Belkin starter kit, I quickly set it up, and it was truly plug and play, the link lights coming on very quickly between the two modules. I liked how you could chose to use either the provided power cords or the angled plug adapters, which gave me more flexibility in fitting the modules where they were plugged in.

The speed I saw, however, was basically the same as my wifi speed, about half of what I needed, and the consistency of that speed was also similar to the wifi, which is to say, not very consistent. Like other people here, I tried plugging the one module in various places around my house, and on different electrical circuits. It was only when the two modules were on the same exact circuit that I achieved my highest speeds, but what good is that? I need to have one plugged into the living room, and one in my bedroom, but in that case the Powerline Networking speeds were no better than the wifi speeds.

I returned this product, since it doesn't achieve what it states that it can. Powerline Networking as a technology does work, but its apparently just not cut out for the real world. However, if you are a casual internet user then you might find the speed acceptable. I ended up doing the extra work needed to run a wired connection to where my computer is, and now I always get my full rated internet speed.

I do wonder, if the "85mbps" adapters can get speeds of about 12mbps (about 1/7th their rated speed) then does that mean the pricey 200mbps models can reliably get 28mbps speeds?
Works great. Turing on data encryption difficult. . This product setup and ran perfectly. I literally just plugged it in, and then connected it to my network, and it just worked.

Later, when I tried to use the software to turn on the encryption, I had some dificulty. Software and instructions could be a bit more user friendly. I'm still not entirely sure, if I did it right. I don't really need the encryption. Since it's only conecting to 2 protected routers, both behind a firewall, I didn't realy care about the encryption. I was just playing around with the settings to see how it worked, in case I ever really did need it.
