Siig 7-port USB Hub JU-H70212-S1 USB Hubs
This review is from : USB 3.0 & 2.0 7-PORT Hub
Really nice with one glaring defect . The unit itself is well made and looks good. The top silver face is alumimum and the remainder is plastic. There are 2 rubber skid pads on the bottom to keep it from sliding around. There are 4 USB 2.0 ports on one side and 3 USB 3.0 ports on the opposite side. It comes with an AC adapter and a nice USB 3.0 host cable.
For the most part, the hub and all of the ports function as you would expect.
The problem is with the included power supply. The USB specification requires that each port be able to deliver up to 500 mA of current to a connected device. The included power supply is rated at 2A or 2000 mA. This is enough to give 500 mA to only 4 of the ports. According to my tests, I could run 3 bus-powered hard drives (Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1.5 TB) with the included power supply, but as soon as I plugged in a fourth bus-powered drive, ALL of the drives and everything else connected to the hub, would shut off and lose their connection to the host PC.
To troubleshoot the problem, I tried a different power supply from another device which was rated at 3.7A (3700 mA) and had the same tip and polarity. This is slightly more than what would be needed to power each of the 7 ports with 500 mA. With this power supply, the device works fine and I have had no issues with 4 bus-powered and 3 self-powered devices connected simultaneously.
I inquired with SIIG about this problem. They confirmed that the included power supply was inadequate to power more than 3 500 mA devices. Also, they do not have a larger power supply that they can provide, so the buyer is on his own to find a replacement.
So, if you are not planning to use any bus-powered devices, or are only going to use low-current devices, you should be quite happy with this hub. However if you do plan to load this up with high-current, bus-powered devices, you will need to find a power supply that can deliver at least 3.5A (preferably more), and has the same connector and polarity.
If SIIG included the proper power supply, I would definitely give this 5 stars.
Good Luck!
