The AT&T USBConnect Lightning provides enhanced mobile broadband performance on the nation's fastest 3G network for quick and easy access to email, the Internet and business applications on your laptop while on the go. The combination of 3G mobile broadband speeds and EDGE national coverage provides an ideal mix of coverage and performance. The USBConnect Lightning connects to your laptop via the USB port, and it also includes a microSD memory card slot that's compatible with cards up to 32 GB in size. The USBConnect Lightning makes connecting in more places easier as it can be used at AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots (with a Wi-Fi enabled laptop and qualified data plan). Additionally, it offers global compatibility with DataConnect Global plans covering additional data usage in select roam zones in more than two dozen countries, including many European countries, India, China, South Korea and Japan. The USBConnect Lightning runs on AT&T's 3G High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) wireless network, which has upload speeds between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps and enhanced download speeds ranging between 700 Kbps and 1.7 Mbps. The faster download speeds provide an optimal wireless Internet-browsing experience, and the faster upload speeds will enhance users' ability to send large files, such as e-mail with attachments, photos or business documents. AT&T is the first U.S. carrier to deploy enhanced upload speeds through High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) in its HSPA network. HSPA is the latest generation of mobile broadband technology based upon the global standard for wireless--GSM.

Best USB GSM Modem . This modem is much better than the one I used to use. I switched from a T Mobile usb modem to this brand new Sierra Wireless one. It comes unlocked, even though it says it is not in the product description. (At lease mine was unlocked). I use it when I travel abroad, and it works perfectly. The only downside I have noticed is that it eats battery life. I have a netbook that is supposed to get around 8-10 hours of battery life, which it does. However, when this is plugged into it, I only get around 4-5 hours of battery life. Otherwise, I think it is great. It comes with the ATT Communication manager on the device itself, and auto-installs when you plug it in. It also has a Micro SD Card reader, I do not use it, but some people find it helpful. It saves a USB port so you can use it as a USB Memory stick and a USB Modem at the same time. As of now, I have not had any problems with at all. I do not expect to have any.

Nice modem... . I've owned this since 2009 and it has always gotten a pretty good signal in the remote oilfields where I work even without an external antenna. The fact that you can plug in a high gain external antenna makes it one of the better modems for rural users.

AT&T software is adequate for most users. Easy setup and "Presto", internet.

USB AirCard Modem Sierra Wireless AT&'T Lightning . I ordered this device and came right away, in a few days. Plugged it in and linked up to AT&T's communication manager and has some trouble linking up. Called the Cust Assist and worked on getting new driver software installed via my Wi-Fi and still had a problem. So I downloaded the AirCard Watcher software and it sync'd right up to the software no problem. Then I tried AT&T's manager again and wha-la it now works. I like AT&T's more due to the info on usage and days that laps, and also the WiFi connection link. This Lightning is great and a much faster 3G signal (7.2mbps) than the older one (3.6) I bought 3 years ago. I also like the slim design and the swivel usb connector for the hard to hook up situations, plus there is no battery to worry about on this one. I'm satisfied!
Does what it should . I started to give this 5 stars, then realized I'd been unhappy with and confused by the documentation. The modem does what it says it will, once it's set up with an AT&T SIM card & service (and that's the part that needs to be clearer).
Obviously, I knew I'd need a SIM card and service, but was unclear about the steps I'd need to take to get going.
Once I tracked down someone at AT&T who knew what they were talking about, it was clear sailing.
The other issue I'd point out is that the software (drivers and AT&T Communication Manager) needs to be "installed" before every use (including the PC waking up from hibernation).
This may be a quirk of the Windows 7 (64 bit) I was running on. I have not looked into this further, so this problem may have a simple resolution. For now, I've chosen to live with it.
Bottom line, I have no regrets about this purchase; it was a worthwhile investment.
Great . Device is heavy and is very well constructed. The jointed USB hinge is very useful in many situations. I use the Sierra Wireless branded wireless software and is better than the at&t branded software suite. If you are using this with a mobile phone SIM (not a data-only SIM) the APN's are widely available on the web and do work. I am using this with my iPhone SIM, personally. I get pretty good signal strengths and tested with DSL reports getting very good speeds (greater than tethering to an iPhone,) rating in the megabytes per second. I am very satisfied with this product and have already recommended it to several colleagues.

One thing to note; The vendor I purchased this from advertised it as new but it arrived in non-manufacturer packaging (some generic cell phone package) and was without the USB extension and display mounting clip that would have otherwise been provided with a new and manufacturer packaged item.
Warning: Requires Special AT&T Plan . First off the Modem works well (or as well as the signal will allow). Installation was fairly easy - had to download the software from AT&T instead of reconizing the device and self installation.

My only problem is with AT&T. I had a regular data plan for my smart phone and hoped that I could use this with my sim while I was on vacation. Nope. It worked but AT&T sends you a bunch of messages saying that you need a different plan (extra $45 / month), and then changed my plan to accomidate the modem and not my phone. Once I call AT&T they restored my orginal plan.

That said, if you want celular modem coverage, you need the modem and another Data plan.
works for me . I purchased this item for occasional use. I bought it third party because I didn't want to lock into a plan. I have 2 cell phones (1 personal, and 1 business). When I need to get on the web from a remote location, I set call forwarding on my personal cell to the work cell, then pull the Sim out, and install it into this modem. We were recently on vacation, and the WiFi in the hotel was very bad. This device saved the day. I'll probably only use it less than 10 times per year, but for 40 bucks and my data plan work-around, it's worth it.
Perfectly acceptable Access! . I am currently tethering my laptop to the internet with my Blackberry and am LONGING for my Sierra Wireless USB Lightning. Why oh why did I make the change? Shoot me now! The Sierra Lightning was so easy, consistent, reliable, and much more than adequate. But I thought AT & T made it expensive. I discovered, after selling my Sierra Lightning USB card on Amazon.com, that I saved a grand total of $4.95 to make the switch to a second line with an unlimited data plan. That may mean more to some of you who use your computers more, but I use mine for business and personal use AND I'm writing a book, so I use my laptop a lot. After I made the switch, I found out that the closest Wi-Fi spot to me is a McDonald's 6 miles away and, when I browse for other spots, I'm offered places like Cape May, N. J. (I live in Bethany Beach, DE), so I'm using data time all the time anyway. With the Sierra USB Card, all I had to do was have the card and laptop, then travel and work, shop, answer emails, or update my website where ever I wanted to go. The Sierra USB card was the perfect size to slip into my purse or pocket and I didn't have to fidget with cords and worry whether or not I had enough bars constantly. It was like cyber comfort food. Give me back my Sierra Wireless USB Card! I'd love to be struck by Lightning twice!
Outstanding USB Aircard . Who wants to pay the outrageous AT&T costs and signing long contracts? Get this baby and just pay for the monthly service without a contract. That is how I get data and cellular services by buying your own compatible equipment.

This device is 3G and connects anywhere, airports, park benches, etc. Perfect.

Cons Review
AT&T too expensive . Nice air card, but only if your company pays for the use charges.

AT&T wants $60/month for 5G, and overage charges are horrendous.

I have a contract with AT&T too, with unlimited data and test, and big monthly minutes allowance, and they wouldn't make me a better deal.

Guess when the contract expires, I'm finding a new mobile company. I've already purchased another air card and got a much better deal from a different company.
