Decent but with some problems . Media players are definitely the next big thing but there's still none out there that are close to being perfect. AppleTV is great but it's far too limited to Apple's own mp4 format and too focused on selling Apple's content. I've been through a couple others - the ultraportable MVIX and a 1st gen. Western Digital - and none have fully got it correct yet.
For the LaCinema:
Pros:
1. It's small, portable, and looks great.
2. Plays almost all files I've tried on it, and 720p video files look great (my TV isn't 1080p, or I'm sure it would look even better).
3. Easy to connect to a home network and stream files from the computer or transfer to the attached hard drive.
4. Has 2 USB slots.
Cons:
1. No volume control - really??? No a huge deal, but it just means having to mess with a 2nd remote when turning on a movie and it seems like something to lazy to have missed.
2. Occasionally freezes up on me in the menu screens (not while watching a movie). Requires me to unplug the box and reboot it.
3. A/V cable that comes with it is HORRIBLE. Really, really horrible. I plug it in and make sure it's a good connection, it will play fine, and then occasionally lines will hit the TV from a bad connection before losing the connection altogether. HDMI is a necessity with this player, and it does not come with it. Make sure you have a HDMI slot to connect to and order a cable with it if you don't have one.
4. Only really good with compressed video files. Should have better DVD support.

LaCie LaCinema Mini HD Connect High Definition Media Player 301917KUA Reviews
dissapointed but I'll deal... . ok so i got this with hopes of streaming media (specifically 1080p and 720p MKV files) without the need for an internal or external drive.
You cannot do this. MKV does not work over network! The player says invalid format.
If you connect an external HDD they will play fine, but there are flaws with that too, mainly even when the device is turned off your external drive will remain on if plugged in, so basically it will fry the device if you leave it attached!
Also transferring files over the network to store on your HDD from the lacie device takes a crazy long time so you have to keep detaching the hdd from the lacinema and then to your computer to transfer files... pain in the ass!
other cons;
horrible menu system
cheapo remote
pro's;
it will play the files once you set everything up, and it plays them in good quality...
so in recap, unless you have a good quality external hdd, look elsewhere.

Great media center great price! . I am seeing some really mixed reviews on here. The lacie mini is my third media center. The 1st was a full pc, the second was a k-world, and then this. I still have the full PC media center, but there is a huge hassle factor and size issue with them, plus the need to keyboards and updating and, meh not worth it just to watch movies.
I purchased my media center from dell.com for $75.
The K world was cheaper than the lacie, as I bought it for $50 several years ago, however I had multiple issues with it, it overheated, needed rebooted, etc etc. And it failed. I bought the lacie as a replacement. I connected it via HDMI to my 60" mitsubishi DLP tv, and I attach a 1tb WD external hard drive to it for content, or I use the networking that came in the package to connect it to my laptop without cables.
Either way I love this thing!
The networking was really easy to set up, and is issue free. I love that even I, who knows next to nothing about networking, was able to get this up and running right away and can use it without problems too.
I have never had issues with my box locking up, unless I forget it is on and leave it running. The quality is very good, the box is plain enough that it is not noticeable on my tv stand, the on light is a bright and vivid blue but when it is on the shelf it is really hard to notice. My only complaint is the remote. It is the size of a mini candy bar and even my harmony remote cannot be programmed to take control of the unit.
It seems that if you lose the itty bitty remote you are in trouble - so keep track of it! The remote issue is not enough for me to take away a star, this thing is great. If mine dies I would not hesitate to buy this product again or another product from the lacie line.

delivers what it promises . I really recommend this product. I got the Lacie HD Connect together with the recommended LaCie Rikiki 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301909 and they work flawlessly. I can play MKV files nicely, there is no lagging, it just works perfectly and the quality is excellent. I could not verify any of the issues people said they experienced in the negative reviews. But mind that the first thing I did after installing it, was to upgrade the firmware of the Lacie Connect HD to version 2.0.7 available for download from the support page of Lacie. I must say I have had bad experience with Lacie products in the past, I took the risk of getting this solution for streaming video files into my HiFi system and believe me, it was no mistake.
I connect the Lacie Connect HD to my Sony BDV-IZ1000W Home Theater Wireless Surround system via a high-quality HD cable and it really works nicely, the sound quality is awesome. My TV is a Sony Bravia KDL-55EX710 and the image quality is awesome too indistinguishable from playing Bluray disks.
Unlike the Apple TV I also have, the Lacie HD Connect remote has a power off button. The remote control, even though a bit clumsy for my taste does everything should do i.e. pause, stop, play, fast forward etc, change subtitles (nice). For some reason the volume can not be controlled via this remote, I use the remote of my surround system. For me is not an inconvenience to have to use two remotes.

Great multimedia player.....BUT!!! . Over the years I have been a big fan of LaCie Hard Disk Drives. Late last summer i.e 2010 I decided to buy the LaCie LaCinema Mini HD Connect (LLMHC) and have been using it ever since. It plays almost everything I have thrown at it including the dazzling mkv files. Yes, it will play VOB files (the standard DVD format) as well but does a lousy job of it. In fact the LLMHC is NOT equipped to handle VOB files. And sometimes no matter which VOB subfile you are playing it will keep going back to display the menu). The occasional avi and mp4 file also won't play. More recently, about 10-months after I bought it I have been having a very hard time playing ANYTHING on the LLMHC. The mkv, avi or whatever file I am playing starts off fine but then the picture freezes and may move after 15-20 seconds but it will get stuck again and by then the pleasure of watching a film is shot to zilch. It is just not worth it.
It is possible that there may be something wrong with the USB cable, but I have tried using brand new USB cables and get the same result. I have also tried playing many different films, even ones the LLMHC could play before. But the film continues to stop after the first few minutes. After scouring the LaCie website I realized that maybe the problem was that I had not ejected my hard disk drive at the end of a film. I tried that too. But no go!!
Lesson learnt: Don't waste money on a multimedia drive (though I hear the Western Digital Multimedia Player. I have not used it but a reviewer on Amazon (this website) said to be careful and not buy the wrong model of WD and cautions to ensure that users buy the multimedia player known as Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player WDBABF0000NBK-NESN - the last part of the preceding sentence is the SKU for the new model of the player.
I am now thinking that since my HPE-150f (Hewlett Packard PC) has a HDMI connection that I will simply connect the PC directly to my TV instead of using any multimedia player. Hopefully, this will be the best solution until a reliable multimedia player comes into the market.

Best media player for the money! Just update the firmware.. . I've had several products from Lacie over the years and always found them to be great! I own three media players a Western Digital an Asus and this Lacie LaCinema. Don't be put off by the negative reviews!! This one is the best of the group by far! The key is to make sure you upgrade to the newer firmware! This adds volume control as well as a host of other options. I use this to play all of my MKV files in hd as well as my stereoscopic 3d movies! Once again after the firmware upgrade I'm proud to say this player playes everything I have been able to throw at it (the same cant be said for the others). The only con that I have is I dont like the ergonomics of the remote but the performance and features far out way any other minor problems. Bottom line buy one you wont be sorry... Trust me I've tried the others and this one gets the job done!
Very bad player of dvd files .
separate files excellent player, very bad pictures of dvd player on hard drive, looks as if it were a single file and not use the dvd menu. iomega other player that I have is excellent to play dvd on hard disk folders. If you aspire to play multimedia files is an excellent

Cons Review
The last place media player . I bought this unit today on sale as a backup to my Patriot Box Office. All the spec., features and rating were very encouraging, so I felt I made a smart purchase. 'Lo and behold', was I wrong, after cringing at the cheap plastic casing I was sure there would still be goodies inside, hummmm. Setting-setup went as smooth as silk, no glitches and it even recognized hi-definition video files on my Tversity server. But here is the kicker, without any warning (product and/or specification description) all audio is downmixed to two channel stereo. Thats right, all my video files with AC3 5.1 stereo sound was degradated to 2 channel stereo. I promptly called LaCie's tech support to report what I thought was a malfunctioning media player and they said it was working fine and buried deep in the CD User Manual there is a one line reference that DTS and Dolby Digital are down mixed to 2 channel stereo. In closing, I would say, "buyers beware," product description borders on deception and can only be considered misleading at best. My the way, it goes back tomorrow.
