Best equipment purchase I've made to date! . For the money, this device is one of the best network infrastructure products I've ever experienced. Bought it from Amazon vendor through Amazon.com - arrived on time and brand-new in factory shrink wrap with usual stellar Amazon.com packaging, all pluses. As a PRIME member, I received 2nd day shipping at no charge - what a great convenience.
We went with a 10/100 smart switch instead of a 10/100/1000 gigabit switch because of cost considerations, this guy was below $600 as opposed to gigabit smart switches which are substantially more expensive. My goal with a 48-port switch was to allow us to connect ALL our ethernet devices to just one rack-mounted switch, instead of 'piggybacking' two 24-port switches and accepting an additional performance hit. My dream came true when I had all users connected up to this one single device, which I regard as WONDERFUL.
When you power it up, it goes through a sequential self-test where it checks its internal circuits for dead ports, and you can visually watch the port lights moving left to right across the device - if any problems surface the unit will light up a trouble light - similar to a light on your car's dash board telling you there is a problem. If it's all good you will know instantly and visually - again, what could be better? A typical network 'dumb switch' does not do these self tests and does not give you ANY feedback. If a port has died on your switch - you won't know it until the user comes crying that he or she can't access the network. God forbid if it's a PRINTER on a dead port - you will really hate life!
This device is accessed via your web browser and the interface offered is intelligent and helps you root out problems in your network. There are colored "lights" that glow green if the connection is active or grey if nothing is alive on any given port. You can turn ports on and off from your web browser while monitoring your smart switch which is wonderful for troubleshooting and diagnosis.
Turn off one port, then run an IP scanner utility (freeware versions available online) to detect which of your network machines is "missing" after your shut the port off on the smart switch, and in this way you can easily reverse-document your network! Example, turn off port 5, run the ip scanner, see machine name MACHINE_X is missing from your scan list - you know MACHINE_X is located on port 5 of your smart switch! How cool is that? Then you just turn the port back on with your software - and you're golden.
Using the "MOST SENSITIVE" monitoring of our network, I can instantly spot other problems, such as gigabit network cards that are trying to send OVERSIZE PACKETS whcih cause problems across the network. Once I figured which machine was the culprit I simply re-configured some of the NIC settings on the rogue PC and no more OVER/UNDERSIZED PACKET warnings from the smart switch!
What could be simpler?
This device will make you a star within your company - reduce downtime - and help you ascertain critical issues such as loopbacks, short-circuits - dead network cards you name it... thus the name "SMART" switch - well deserved and accurate. I would have to say it was definitely a SMART purchase decision!
The warranty on this unit is LIFETIME, though there are exclusions for the most-common switch killers - lightening and/or power surges. We have this beauty plugged into its very own UPS surge protector to protect against those hazards and provide maximum signal security across the network. I chose HP over CISCO and very very very happy.
Would buy again - would recommend to anyone.
