Zoom External Modem Model 3095 for Laptops . zoom 56K V.92/V.90 Modem (USB Mini External) Model 3095
After I had many internet drop outs from my External US Robotics Modem, Model U13-4292 PN USR 5637, for my lap top, I read a review about it and found out why this was happening. Apparently from this reviewer after the Robotics Modem gets too hot after a few hours of use it may become unstable and begin to intermittently drop your Internet connection. I then began a search for a better external modem and found the Zoom USB Mini External Modem Model 3095. It had no reviews, good or bad at the time so I thought I would try it out. Am I ever glad I made that decision. This Zoom Modem has performed flawlessly ever since I got it on 10-1-11. Not one drop out ever, not even after 8 hours of continuous use. Another thing that I am pleased with is that I can hear it dialing and making a connection through my speakers and hear the handshaking sounds that I could not hear with my US Robotics. I am well pleased with its performance and would recommend it as a good buy.

ZOOM hits a home run again! . I've been using Linux since 2000. One thing that doesn't work very well with Linux is PCI/MOBO modems. The first thing one always does when they begin to use Linux is get an external modem. The first one I ever got was a USRobotics. Quite expensive and it worked right out of the box. Unfortunately it only lasted about 4 months! I got another one, the exact same model...again, it died in 5 months. I went on a search for external modems and ended up with a ZOOM external modem. In 11 years, I've had the same ZOOM modem. The only thing that's gone wrong with it is the power button broke and won't stay pushed 'on', so I taped it pushed in and it still works. Now that MOBO's are moving away from serial/external modems and utilizing USB heavily, I needed to get a USB modem (my new MOBO doesn't even *have* a serial port connection in the back!). I wasn't sure what to expect with a USB modem and Linux, but got this one since it was fairly cheap. I plugged it in, turned on the system, looked for the new modem and my Linux found it without a hitch. I didn't have to add drivers or anything! (I'm using openSUSE 11.3 btw). The real nice thing about this modem too, is that right on the box it's one of the very few things that says it will work with Linux, even though most anything that works with M$ and Mac's, will work on a Linux system, but M$ pays big companies to *NOT* print those kinds of things because Linux is a competitor and can't affordt to fight them...yet!I'm using the modem as I type, on my Linux. No problems so far and I hope it lasts as long as my old warhorse external serial ZOOM modem did. As far as I'm concerned, ZOOM is tops out there for these kinds of things and again, I couldn't be happier with their products.
Quality modem easy installation . I bought this modem for my wife--her new laptop doesn't include a modem, and not all our relatives have high-speed Internet. I picked out this model because it's a quality brand and it supports Linux. The wife's laptop is Windows 7, but I might need to use it on my Lubuntu laptop sometime, so it made sense to get one that's likely to work with it.

So I opened the box, followed the instructions, and it installed just fine. I had it done in just a few minutes, start to finish, and now she can dial up on the road when she needs to. Plus it's a small unit so it will travel well.

Cons Review
driver signatures invalid . Puchased to replace a dell/conexent that suddenly quit working. This modem works with driver signing disabled during f8 bootup. But both the generic driver signed by microsoft and the conexent driver from zoom signed by conexent are disabled by windows 7 for not being signed. No doubt a windows 7 update has caused the problem. Neither zoom or microsoft even acknowlege the problem on their websites. Zoom and conexent should not play dumb even if they don't have a solution, while thier customer waste hours trying to get thier products to work.
