Good solid player inside and out . When my WD TV Live finally quit last week, I was set to get one of the newer WD models, but decided to take a look at what else is available on the market. What caught my eye on this model is the new 1185 based decoder and gigabit network feature, both of which are typically only available on players much higher priced than this.I have prime shipping so I got the unit in only one day. Can't beat that.The unit has a hefty feel to it because of the metal enclosure. It has a minimalist look and is overall very compact. The build quality is very solid, no rattles or flexing anywhere. The remote is likewise impressively well built and buttons feel very good in hand. A bunch of cables and accessories are included, although an HDMI cable was not - which was okay since I had plenty of cheap $2 Monoprice HDMI cables.Connections are quick and easy: power, HDMI, and LAN. There's an optional WiFi dongle, but I have a network jack next to the TV so it worked out great with no extra cost.The turning on process is a little long, taking about 15 seconds from the time I hit the power button to when I could actually start navigating the menu. The main menu defaults to the file browser icon, which is the familiar way of browsing for movies by going through folders on the drive. The EP600 also offers a media library feature, and I am a bit divided on this: it does bring some additional conveniences if you have a ton of files but you have to let the player index the files, which can take some time. The player does let you specify which type of files to index, so if you have a few thousand photos on the same drivebut only want to index the videos, then it's quicker. I am going to reserve final judgement on the library feature as I use it some more. But the EP600 at least let you browse for files the regular way.Video playback performance is excellent as it handled every file I had in every flavor. I even tried a 60fps demo video for Battlefield 3 and while I don't know it was truly played at 60fps, it was played without any lagging and everything was in sync. I have a TrueHD and DTS-HD capable receiver, and the corresponding lights came on when I played videos with those audio tracks, so true bitstream output is happening correctly for these new generation audio formats. It's nice to see that with each new generation, standalone media players are getting closer and closer in performance to computers. At this point, I would be more surprised than upset if I bumped into a video that didn't play correctly on the EP600.The video playback control is pure awesomeness and shows that someone really took the time to study what people want when they watch a video. For example, press the subtitle button and it switches subtitle files rather than bring up a big complicated subtitle settings menu - intuitive. Press the up/down arrow and the subtitle position changes. Press the left/right arrow and the subtitle text size changes. Press the search button and a on-screen slider pops up to let you quickly jump to a spot in the video - extremely easy to use. Want to skip a slow boring part but doesn't want to miss anything? Press fast forward and you get smooth video and clear audio at up to 2x playback speed!I bought this primarily as a local media player, so I didn't mind that it does not have access to Netflix or Amazon VOD. I did a quick look through the Internet section and there's access to the usual suspects: Youtube, Flikr, Picasa, and a large selection of what I'd consider third tier content: Internet radio, video blogs, tech shows, news clips, etc. There is a huge channel for what appears to be Chinese online video content with a lot of sub layers of menus. In summary, by itself the EP600 won't be enough for someone looking for Netflix/Hulu/Pandora and other such "premium content" services. A Roku box will still be best for those types of streamed content based on forum discussions I've combed through. However, the EP600 does support local content much better than Roku. The EP600 has a web browser but it's a mixed bag. You really need to connect a mouse and keyboard to the player to use it effectively, and even then it is kind of slow. It also does not support flash, which is a major drawback for any web browser. Other manufacturers small and large have tried to bring web browsers to media boxes like this, I have yet to see one that works well. It's nice that the EP600 has a browser, but it will make you wish for your computer if you are doing anything more complicated than a Google search.I also briefly tried the local media sharing capability of the EP600, using my Windows 7 PC to read/write files to a 2TB 3.5" drive I had attached to the EP600's SATA connector. I was getting speeds of about 10MB/s, which is about twice as fast as the older generation players with 100mbps LAN connections. I think the bottleneck is probably the processor and memory since the hard drive and SATA interface can handle much faster data rates. My network switch did indicate that it had a Gigabit connection with the EP600 so that part of it looks to be true to the player's specification.In all, the EP600 is a keeper for me. It's obviously well built, with excellent playback capabilities. The user interface is responsive and looks very slick and polished. The menus and controls are intuitive and easy to use. As long as this player lasts longer than my WD TV, it'll get a buy recommendation from me.

Great so far!!! . I purchased this player with a very specific need in mind. I wanted to play my ripped movie collection, HD home movies, pictures and music through my home entertainment system. I wanted to do this without having my computer on all the time. This player, along with a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR3700 and a 2TB external USB drive allowed me to accomplish this. I had previously owned (and still do own) the Micca MPLAY-HD 1080p Full-HD Digital Media Player and was very happy with it. It played every media type I threw at it. It really was a wonderful device. The drawback with it came when I wanted to load more content. I would have to remove the external USB drive from my entertainment center, connect to my PC to put more media on it, and then move it back. This process became tedious. Enter the Micca ep600...With the external USB drive hooked to the USB port on my Netgear n600 WNDR3700, and the ep600 connected to the router with a wired 1Gb connection, I was ready to go. Note that this ep600 does support a wireless dongle to connect to your router, but since I already have a wired connection into a switch inside my entertainment center for my XBOX360, Blue Ray Player and TV; using the wired connection was a better option for me. I did upgrade the firmware to the latest version, as it didn't ship with the latest revision. I did notice a snappier feel to the menu transitions and there is a readme file that shows everything that was fixed/added. It took me a little bit of playing around to figure out how to navigate the menus and what some things did, but overall I am very impressed with this device. It does play youtube videos, but it is limited in that you can change the quality of the video like you can on the actual website. There is also a web browser that you can use with a USB keyboard, but it doesn't do flash. But, I wasn't expecting to use it as a web browser or youtube player, so this in no way effects my overall opinion of the device.There is one thing that does bother me. The player has a media library feature, that will scan you drive devices and find media and things. This is a nice feature. It also creates a database file that you can manipulate to put things in certain categories and stuff like that. This is how the player knows where to go look for your movies, pictures or music if you click that icon on the main dashboard. However, it looks like the media library is only supported on drives connected directly to the device via USB. In my setup, all my media is hanging off my network. I can still access it just fine, but it takes me longer to navigate down to it through the menu selections. I know I can probably make this easier on me by setting up my USB shares so they are shared at the "Movie", "Picture", "Music" etc. level, but it would be nice if there was a feature that I could use to create a shortcut for the various icons on the main splash screen down to any network attached path I choose. This is really my only complaint thus far.Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase, and I look forward to using this and other Micca products for years to come. Their intuitive design, ease of use and support for pretty much every media type I'd ever use have made me a customer for life.

With these it sometimes didn't work at all, or if it did, it sputtered, stopped and started. Since these old videos form a large part of my collection, I have reluctantly returned it.

Player that simply works . There are many choices, but not many players that could deliver on its very fundamental function. More of the secondary functionality offered - the less it will be able to deliver of basic functionality.
If you care about anything else more than playing HD video right - look somewhere else. If you want player that plays HD video and HD audio as it supposed to be played - this one is for you. +++A+++ as network HD media player. Everything else, I simply do not care...

Finally a higher end device! . Now this media player Rocks... On da network, with external HDDs via USB, and it doesn't miss a step with 1080p BDs or 3D iso files... Just watched Avatar 3D on this baby and the 3D quality is pristine and perfect quality...
micca ep600 . I've had the player about two weeks. So far haven't had any problems with it. The remote control is big and easy to use. The main screen is user friendly and hook-ups are compatible with new hdmi or older TVs. It plays everything I've tried. Movies, pictures, and music have all been great.
Little Info Available . There isn't much info available on this device, so I'm posting what I found out from purchasing it. Even the box doesn't say much about it. The device has an HDMI output and a digital audio output. Oddly enough it does have an optical audio out, and basic RCA plug outs for video and 2 audios, but no true component outputs. There is a splitter cable included that appears to take a small mini-plug (earphone style) output and turn it into the 3 G-B-R. I didn't try this since IMHO it has to be relatively low quality compared to actual component outputs. One side of the device has 2 USB ports, and the other side had a SATA connector and an slot for a SD/SDHC card. The device is a little larger than a 3x5 card. I couldn't find any info on the Micca website for this device.
Cons Review
Used items being sold as new. . Was hoping I would get a new media player today. Took a chance because of some decent reviews. Already bummed that the Pivos AIOS player did not live up to my expectations. Received this item today and it is clearly used and not NEW. Scratched up badly. I do not want to pay $100 for a media player that is used. I do not even want to attempt to install it. As you can see, this is the third review for this product with the same issue. Now I am stuck awaiting my refund from the Micca EP600 and the Pivos AIOS. Currently out $200 and no media player. What a waste of time. Save your money and buy a PS3 instead. This is bad business practice.

got a faulty one . after being satisfied with micca's spec and reviews i bought it for my brother in law in Houston. surprise ! surprise ! he recieved a faulty one with a non-functioning power button, scratched front pannel. even the remote didnt work. he will be returning this shortly to amazon.
