I guess it depends.... . Bought 4 of these. I planned to use this for my 3 Tivos. Transferring videos from DVR to DVR was time consuming and often the transfer rate wasn't fast enough to stream. I would have to wait for the transfer to "catch up" and resume playing. I was using Wireless G adapters over a Wireless N network. I do most of my recording on my TIVO in my living room which I upgraded with a 1 terrabyte drive. However, I have two other Tivos in the bedrooms (master bedroom and a child's room) that have smaller drives and I typically copy programs from the Living Room Tivo to them.
I plugged one Netgear adapter into a wall socket near my computer. I needed more outlets and unfortunately this model does not offer a power outlet. I believe they have a model that does. The Monster Powernet certainly does but it is very expensive. To resolve the outlet issues I bought a General Electric 50759 6-Grounded Outlet In-Wall Adapter, White from Amazon. You are not supposed to use the Netgear adapter with a power strip or extension cord but I thought since this was merely an extension of the outlet itself it should work. It also does not have a surge supressor which is also a no no. Anyway...I plug the first one in to the outlet adapter and attach the ethernet cord to the Netgear adapter and my Dlink N router. All green light. Easy.
The second adapter I plug into an outlet on the second floor (different circuit). I get all green lights. Sweet. I was also using a switch because I wanted to plug in my TIVO, a computer I have attached to my main TV, and a SONY Blu Ray DVD player with streaming internet video capability. The switch work great and all 3 devices were getting the internet feed and pretty fast too. Faster than my wireless G. So far so good.
Up to the second floor...another different circuit. Plug in the adapter and I get a red light. Which means the adapter is working but at the slowest speed. As I recall green light is over 80 mps...yellow is 50-80 mps..and red is under 50 mps. I was theoretically getting 54 mps with my Tivo wireless G adapter so this was at best the same speed and perhaps slower. However, for whatever reason my wireless is never consisten. I see this when I log on with a laptop. I often get 54 mps but then it will drop and go up and down. My friend tells me it is interference. I live in a condo complex and when you check the wireless networks there are almost 25 in the immediate area. So I guess interference is a good reason.
So....red light. I am going to move the adapter around to see if it is the plug or the circuit. But the plug I am using is the closest to the TIVO and that is the idea isn't it. A little disappointed. So I guess it depends. One ciruit worked great and the other not so great. So good luck. Great idea but will it work for you? It depends.

Netgear Powerline AV 200Mbps Ethernet Adapter - 200Mbps, Recertified Reviews
I have bought 3 of these! . I bought 3 of these for my home network (1 set of 2, and an extra 1 -- all refurbished) and they all work perfectly! In a 3-story townhouse...one on each floor, works great! All PCs are connected to router and I have no issues with internet speed. I highly recommend this unit, and if I put in my more PCs in my house, I'll be getting more of these!
