With the Microsoft 4-port router, you can connect up to four computers to a single broadband connection (with cable or DSL modem), share files and printers with other computers on your network at up to 100 Mbps, or play games with multiple players on the Internet and within your own network.
Included with the Microsoft 4-port router is an easy-to-use setup wizard, designed to make connecting your computers together easier. The router comes with strong security features, including a built-in firewall, Network Address Translation (NAT), and access control lists. The 4-port router easily connects to your network with universal plug and play for functionality such as voice messaging, video messaging, and games. You can also monitor your network status easily with Microsoft broadband network utility.
Along with the 4-port router, you'll receive a stand (detachable), a power supply cable, an Ethernet cable, a startup guide, a user's guide, a setup CD-ROM, and a blank floppy disk.
System requirements include a computer with a network adapter to configure the router, and external broadband (cable, DSL, or other) modem with Ethernet port (not compatible with dial-up modems), Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or later to view and use the router management tool, and an available 120 V AC power outlet.
Additional requirements include: a computer with processor running Windows 98, 98 SE, Me, 2000 Professional, XP Professional, or XP Home Edition; Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later (setup will install Internet Explorer 6.0 browser components, if necessary, but will not displace your primary browser); 28 MB of available hard-disk space if you already have Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0 (132 MB of available hard disk space if you are installing Internet Explorer for the first time); a 4x or faster CD-ROM drive, and a VGA or higher resolution monitor
Note: Not all Internet service providers (ISPs) allow the sharing of a broadband connection. Please check with your ISP.
Very nice reliable router . Usually, I shy away from Microsoft hardware just because they are such a stinking monopoly. However, I purchased this device on the basis of it's price, features and benefits. I have been running this router for 2 years NON-STOP. It has only been off when the power was out, and when it is on, it is constantly in use. I networked our appartment with it, and my roommate has a sleep schedule exactly opposite of mine, so I use it heavily in the day, and he is on it all night. No hardware problems, it is simply a reliable router.
I do not, however, recomend using the software that comes with the router, the "Base Station Managment Tool" or whatever. This is a useless piece of software unless you like to see useless information that is available elsewhere on your computer arranged in one window. It is a waste of space on your disk and has basically no real benefits. Simply plug your router into your broadband, and into each computer. From any computer, go to the "Router Management Tool", which is firmware located on the router itself (type 192.168.2.1 in your browser address line and hit go) and change any settings you need to from there (such as logon information for your ISP). By the way, the person who had to have the original computer on for any subsequent computer to work, this was the mistake they were making. The logon information for their ISP was stored on HER COMPUTER instead of the BASE STATION. Therefore, her computer had to be on in order for the base station to log on to her ISP. Anybody in my appartment is connected to the internet REGARDLESS of what computers are on or off or whatever, which is how it is designed to work, with proper use.
Anyway, if you use this router correctly, and in its simplest form (plug it in to ISP, plug it into computers, no extra software installation), it is super easy and reliable. I would reccomend this product for even people with limited networking knowledge, its simple and works like a charm.
Easy to use . This is an extremely easy device to set-up. The documentation is clear, and would make it very easy for even the novice to use. Also this is a very small device. You are able to stand it on it's side and and it takes up practically no space. You can't go wrong if you need this type of item.I would also recommend, if you don't want to use or install the network card, the USB/ethernet adapter. It is another good ad-on. Put your bad feelings toward MS aside, and give this a shot.
5 - 10 minute set-up! Very easy to install. . I bought this so I could continue to use my PC while on Xbox Live. It was very easy to set up and it only took about 10 minutes to have up and running.
