Plug & Play or Plug It In For More Power. Ports Too Close Together For Some Uses. . Belkin makes a lot of USB hub styles and this one is a nice "candy bar" design. It allows you to use it as "plug & play" - no power cord required - for low draw uses, but also comes with a power cord for those uses that draw more juice.

However, as with many of the USB port side by side designs, this Belkin model does not space the ports far enough apart to be able to use a SD card reader and still be able to use the port next to it (the card reader side infringes on the port next to it).

Because of the design I gave this Belkin model 3 stars.
Belkin Ultra Slim Aluminium Series 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub (F4U038-APL) Reviews
Handy item for laptop users . We use a laptop as our primary home computer. Typically it sits on our desk at home. A few times a week it gets taken into the kitchen or living room for one reason or another though. The annoying part is reinserting all the USB items to the laptop when it gets put back on the desk. I do realize a docking station would remedy that problem, but for my model computer they want close to $150 for one!!

This is an excellent option to the docking station. We keep our external hard drive, mouse, printer, and iPod dock all plugged into this. So now when we want to take the laptop away, or put it back, it is only one USB to plug in. Simple, easy, and works great. What more could I ask for?!

Another benefit, although not something I personally use it for, is that this is small enough to take with you. For people with laptops lacking in USB ports, as many of the lightweight versions are now, you can just throw this is your laptop case and have ample room for USB items as you may need them.

Strangely, my laptop has 4 USB ports. One on back left, one on back right, one on rear of the left side, and one on the front right corner. This makes my laptop look like a spider with all the cords jutting out of it all over the place. Now I just plug one USB into my laptop (for this item) and the rest are kept neatly stored in the USB hub, out of the way at the back of my desk.

I love this product! While they are surely other options, I have no complaints with this one and confidently recomend it to anyone who has the need.
Belkin Ultra Slim Aluminium Series 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub (F4U038-APL) Opinions
Great Quality is Worth a Little More . I received the Belkin Ultra Slim Aluminum Series 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub from the Amazon Vine Program for review. Here's my take on it.

It's slim and sleek, very lightweight (the cables and power supply are weightier than the hub!). It's plug and play, so after disconnecting the el cheapo plastic hub I had been using and plugging in the Belkin, I powered up my computer and the hub and hardware were instantly recognized and installed. The Belkin connects an external hard drive, my mouse and keyboard. Speed is essential for my hard drive and the hub performs well. While this hub is recommended for laptops, it's just what I needed for an older desktop with few hi-speed USB ports.
Easy to open clam-shell pkg... . I couldn't believe my eyes as I was trying to open this package. I was looking for a spot to stick my scissors in to begin cutting. When I turned the pkg over, I noticed an arrow by the "B" in Belkin at the top of the pkg. All I needed to do was pull in that area & the back of the clam-shell came right off along the perforation. I pried the cardboard away from the plug & USB cord, and used the tip of the scissors to pull the cardboard away from the hub. All in all, it was much simpler than normal with no cutting involved. I was so excited about this easier to open clam-shell pkg that I had to let you know about it too.

I have an external hard drive and 2 other USB devices hooked into this hub which also needs to be plugged in, so there's a few cords that get in the way. I backed up my laptop to the external hard drive while it was connected to this hub & didn't notice that the back-up took any longer than usual. So far so good! I'll update my review with any new findings.

The port is approx 3.75" x 1". Set-up is easy & quick. Just plug n play.

This product comes with a 1 year limited warranty.
Super nice look feel and size + AC adapter! . UNBOXING/IMPRESSIONS
Once I tore apart the insides of the packaging, I found the hub itself, which is a very nice design. It is rather small, yet feels very solid and well made. The material is a metal of some sort and it has a nice weight to it. It includes a 4 or 5 foot mini-USB cable and to might great surprise, an AC adapter.TESTING
I just did a few basic tests -- Windows 7 64-bit recognized the hub immediately and items plugged into the hub worked fine. Windows XP worked the same way and passed.Overall, I would highly recommend this hub as it would fit well into many laptop bags, has a seemingly high build quality and has the optional AC adapter for those users that might require items that draw a lot of juice.
Over-priced at Amazon.com . Got this USB hub from the local Apple Store for about $33, plus local sales tax. Shopped Amazon.com first, but this item was listed for close to $50. Cosmetically, the item matches closely to the Mac Mini color scheme and size, which I am pleased with. The USB hub worked very well and no complaints at all. Hope Amazon.com can price this product more competively than Best Buy or the Apple Stores. The product is excellent. If you want to blend your USB hub with apple/mac components, specifically, the Mac Mini, than you should not be disappointed with the product.
Love having USB ports so handy on my desk . I keep this little USB hub on my desk, right underneath my monitor. I usually have 3 short USB cords (mini, micro, and a weird one) plugged in, ready to hook up any phone, camera, mp3 player, iPod, e-reader, etc at a moment's notice. The access is so much handier than finding the right cord to swap in and out of the desktop computer's single unused port.I've had no problems using this hub with any of my devices. Another review mentioned that sometimes you can't fit 4 plugs in the hub -- I have not had that problem, but am using only cords with standard size plugs. I would give this 5 stars, except for the price. It seems a little high to me.
Works like a charm . Little to say about this item. It works like a charm, is small, and is externally powered. It's a little pricey, but it's definitely a good piece of hardware. It's small enough to fit on a little ledge on my computer, so it's handy to get to when I need it.
Decent 4-port USB Hub . USB hubs are one of those computer extras that don't get a lot of attention or thought until one runs out of ports. When needed, though, a hub can greatly expand the USB capabilities of a system. This particular hub is one that comes with its own power supply, which is in my opinion better for most uses.

This is an unassuming little device, about the size of a small harmonica and about as solid. Its small size allows it to take up a small amount of desk space, tucking easily behind a monitor or case (or, if being used with a laptop, behind the whole system). In my specific situation I have it plugged into a laptop with an external monitor attached to it so I have the hub just at the base of the external monitor where it is out of thew way but still easily accessible.

In use, it works as it should. My one real test for the hub was to connect up an external USB hard drive, which does not work well with my other USB hub (coincidentally, also a Belkin product). When I attached the hard drive, the system immediately saw it and assigned a drive letter to it, just as if I connected it directly. This is how a hub should handle such a drive and I was pleased when there was no issue.

The one complaint I have with this hub is that the power cord is not snug. When the hub is moved while attached it is very easy to disconnect it from the power supply. My workaround was to use a twist tie to attach the power cord to the USB cable that attaches the hub to the system, after which I can move the hub without any difficulty.

This is a decent USB hub that works as it is supposed to work. Other than the less-than-secure plug for power I have no complaints.
Lifesaver for power users . As soon as this arrived, I immediately handed it over to my husband who does photography and print media work. He is constantly swapping out USB plugs on his laptop to connect a hard drive, camera, voice recorder, printer, storage disk, iPhone, you name it. In the past we had looked at some but they were too big and bulky, would only work on a specific machine, or were unable to stand up to constant use.

After four weeks of continual use (and I must admit a bit of abuse), this USB hub from Belkin is still going strong. USB cables are constantly being connected and disconnected multiple times a day, but the hub ports still tightly connect to the plugs. There have been no issues with any USB plugs not fitting correctly as I have experienced with cheaper and more cheaply made models. The USB hub itself was a breeze to install. Open the package, plug in and you're set. It's very slim and lightweight, and the plug-and-play ease of use makes it extraordinarily portable between machines. It's one of those pieces of equipment that you would normally hesitate to buy thinking that you won't get much use out of it, but once you have it, it quickly becomes something you use everyday.

As this hub is a power draw, the power cord is an added bonus and often necessary for heavy users. If you use an external hard drive, be aware that trying to use this hub as a connection point without the hub being connected to the power cord may cause the external hard drive to stall from lack of power. If you use multiple devices using USB bus power will require you to use the power cord supplied with the Belkin USB hub or the devices will not work and/or a warning will pop up on your screen stating you do not have enough power to run the object connected to the hub. So though this device is infinitely portable, keep in mind that if you're in a scenario such as taking the commuter train to work and don't have a power outlet, you may not be able to plug four devices (or even one depending on power needs) into the hub without encountering a low power warning. This is the caveat that comes with such a small, sleek design.

Though the hub is pricier than many models, you do get a one year warranty and peace of mind knowing that Belkin makes excellent products. This USB hub can take the abuse from heavy USB port/machine rotation in an insanely busy public media office or comparably gentle use of a home user who needs the extra connections. It's a product of which you should certainly get your money's worth.
