Perfect design . I installed this switch in our small office. It works flawlessly right out of the box. Very hard to understand all the lingo in the setup configuration unless your are a networking gearhead. It has way too many programming options. It was completely over my head. However, by calling netgear, I was able to optimize the settings for my needs.

NETGEAR GSM7248 Prosafe 48PORT Switch Reviews
Excellent Value . I have been a fan of NetGear's blue-metal-box line (now called ProSafe) for some years, so I dove into this box (and its 24-port brother) for a project I was working on.
Out of the box, they were plug-and-play. They automatically detected 4 parallel spans to another vendor's switch and started using them before I had a chance to formally configure a LAG (link aggregation group).
The auto configuring ports perform flawlessly in our mixed network of 10/100/1000Base-T based Macs, printers, routers, servers, and various toasters. In fact, they perform so well, they, um, "pointed out" some driver issues we had on a few systems that had trouble coping with the added speed.
The web UI is spartan for sure, but quite functional. Configuration settings are pretty obvious without reading the manual. Their SNMP MIBs are complete.
There is one gotcha... You must remember to *save* your settings. It does not do this automatically.
Support seems excellent, and they openly describe fixed bugs and any outstanding issues contained in each firmware update available from their website. (I didn't need to upgrade, I did it to test the upgrade process.)
Adding icing to the cake is a lifetime warranty and a high MTBF.
If I were to pick a word describing this box, it would be "lean".
