A great product! . I was having trouble getting wi-fi to all parts of the house. I bought an Edimax repeater, but it would drop on occasion, especially when we took a power hit, requiring a laptop to be connected to it by a cable to resync and reboot, and it resulted in lower speeds. I plugged one of the AV 500s into the wall socket next to the cable modem upstairs in the front of the house and ran an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the AV500. I pluged another AV500 into the wall socket downstairs next to my computer and also connected it by ethernet cable. I plugged a third AV500 into a socket in the back of the house downstairs and ran a cable from it to the former repeater, now reset to be a wireless access point (its default setting). I pushed the sync button, as instructed, on the AV500 at the cable modem then walked to the other two and pushed their sync buttons (you have 2 minutes to complete this so you don't have to rush). Everything synced up perfectly and worked without a hitch. They have been running several weeks now and what a pleasure! Speed differentials (using speedtest.net) are: PC on wireless direct to the cable modem was 6800 Mbps download, 4800 Mbps upload; now wired through the AV500, it is 23,600 Mbps download and 18,200 upload. The laptop using the repeater was 3400 download and 2100 upload; now using the repeater reset to wireless access point, it is 9600 download and 7400 upload. The house is 30 years old so I think I would get even higher speeds in a newer house's wiring system. I highly recommend it. Follow the easy instructions and you can't go wrong.

NETGEAR XAV5001 Powerline AV 500 Adapter Reviews
Simple fast and easy . This is a great way to extend your network without ripping the walls apart and when a wireless connection will not work. We're using this for our Slingbox and second VZ Fios router. The time to install three adapters was under 30 minutes plus a few minutes to upload the network monitoring software. Transfer rates are more than satisfactory but not as fast as advertised -- but its not a problem. The trade off in speed and construction costs is worth the journey.

NETGEAR XAV5001 Powerline AV 500 Adapter Opinions
Powerline works fine but... . Powerline networking works fine and the Netgear adapters are fine products. However, so far the AV 500 adapters do not perform any better than the AV 200 adapters I had in place before I ordered the 500's. With either I get about 120Mbit between the same plugs. Just as a warning. Don't think that you are going to increase your bandwidth by going to the higher speed adapter.

Great product after a return . The configuration of our home made wireless connection difficult. I purchased the XAV5001, received it, installation was a snap (plug and play), and it worked great. In fact download speed on the connected laptop was faster than the main desktop. Worked great for a week and then just stopped. Spoke with a Netgear tech support rep and we determined both units were "dead." Returned the adapters, received replacements quickly, and so far, so good.
I'm not sure what caused the adapters to malfunction, but they do work well. It would have been a "5 Star" had it not been for the return issue.

Love it! . This unit not only performed as advertised, it exceeded my expectations. In the warmer weather I like sitting on my porch and using my computer. However, my router is inside the house and I always got a weak signal. Since I have an outside outlet I decided to buy one and give it a try. Not only did I no longer get signal loss, the data transfer speed increased. I am very satisfied.
Good product does at it says . Bought a pair and then another single unit for my media server to reach two wd hd plus media receivers. Works great, no interruptions and setup is so simple. Recommended if cannot pass Ethernet cable and wireless is too slow like when streaming video
Easy to use works great! . I just moved into a new home (well, 90's home, but new to me) and needed a quick way to hook up my windows media center, my desktop PC, my XBox, and a machine in another room.I bought three of these adapters, plugged them into the wall, and then hooked them up to switches in two of the rooms, and directly into the PC in the third room. I believe I had to press a button to get the devices to find each other, but they did so quickly, and have been maintenance free since (at least six months). There are simple status lights that tell you whether the device is working correctly, and the quality of its connections to other devices. My backups go every night over these devices from my downstairs machines to my server upstairs. I stream HD video from my windows media center upstairs to my xbox media extender downstairs. I play Xbox games from downstairs going over these devices to my internet connection upstairs. Sometimes my wife is watching videos / playing with photos (hosted upstairs) on her machine downstairs while I play COD Black Ops on the xbox downstairs, and everything still works fine.Do I get 500 Mbps from this? Probably not, I think I get somewhere between 30 and 100 Mbps. But I never have video playback problems, and am able to back-up two machines every night (incremental backups) over them, so I'm extremely satisfied!
Cons Review
Poor problems disconnects . At first, I was incredibly disappointed at the really poor performance (throughput) of the two devices working together. I was seeing only 3MB/sec (3000KB) whereas my wireless network delivers about 7MB/sec.
I then updated to the latest firmware and instantly saw a huge increase in throughput performance, up to about 9MB/sec. My entire network is Gigabit so I was hoping for a bit more than 9MB/sec, but would have been happy if it weren't for the showstopping issue:
Constant Disconnects
This thing constantly disconnects off the network. I was using it with my WD TV Live Plus and whenever the network disconnects, the WD TV Live Plus loses its position of whatever movie you were watching and resets itself all the way back to the main menu. This was a deal breaker, the device disconnected at least once every few hours whereas my wireless network has never once had this problem.
Product returned.

Did not live up to expectations . I was very disappointed with this. No matter what I did in my house, the best I could get from speedtest.net was 7MB down and 7 MB up. Direct wired to the router gets me 45MB down and 8 up. I have a wireless G bridge and it gets the same 7 down/7 up and it cost $35. I bought it for the "high speed", but after testing this, if I really need a powerline adapter, I'd go for the cheapest one as I can't imagine it getting a slower speed. I returned the Netgear.
Freezes every few days . The device freezes every fewdays and starts working again, if I remove the power and connect it back. Other than that, it works well.
