Cisco SG 100-16 Ethernet Switch - 16 Port SR2016T-NA Switches & Bridges

This review is from : Cisco SR2016T 16-Port Rackmount 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch
Silent and simple gigabit workgroup switch . Cisco's marketing department royally screwed up naming this product. They chose a model number (SR2016T) that is one character away from another product (SR2016), which was so horribly panned by customers that it was pulled from the market. They should have just used the part number (SG 100-16) and left it at that. To be clear, this switch bears NO relation whatsoever to the Linksys SR2016 switch. The 24 port models are different as well.

My specific need was for a 16+ port gigabit switch that is quiet (silent if possible) and that will last a long time, running 24x7, completely neglected in a dusty closet. This unit is fanless, delivering on the quiet part, and also making it less likely to suffer from dust build up that can lead to overheating. I can't say yet how well it will hold up over the long term, but I'm not too worried since it comes with a lifetime warranty too.

So far I have had zero issues. Every device that was working on the original switch (an SMC8624 that is being re-tasked) immediately came up at 1Gb on the new switch. Recommended.

Note: the product literature is unclear and sometimes contradictory, but the 16 port model has an internal power supply (no wall wart) and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Cisco SR2016T 16-Port Rackmount 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Reviews
Nice when you need more unmanaged ports . This 16 port gigabit switch is nice for small installations or home use where you want some speed but don't require port management. It comes extenders to support rack mounting or could be wall mounted also.

My main suggestion for a change in this product would be to put the "gigabit" LED for each port somewhere better. As it is now, the green connectivity/activity light is on the top left of each port and the green gigabit indicator is on the top right. When you're trying to look quickly at status, that puts the gigabit light right next to the connectivity light for the next port over.

The core features are good for an unmanaged switch. All ports detect crossover cables, support QoS tags, and the switch supports jumbo frames. It has no fan so it is quiet and needs appropriate climate control and ventilation. It also supposedly support "green" energy efficient technology but there were no details to explain that - just a marketing-speak type of statement. this switch does not deliver Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) on any ports. If you're looking for PoE, there is at least one other manufacturer who delivers PoE on 4 ports in an 8 port switch. Someone probably offers some powered ports in a 16 or 24 port size if you need that feature, but expect a bigger power supply and probably cooling fans.

It's good to see prices for 16 and 24 port switches are coming down. Hopefully the price of switches with management features will come down further also.
Cisco SR2016T 16-Port Rackmount 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Opinions
Cisco Switch . This Cisco Switch replaced a Linksys Ethernet II 24 port switch that was 7 years old and just starting to go bad. It came packed good, very simple interface, we had it up and running in around 3 minutes. From the very start all the computer systems were recognized, and we were back to work in a small office environment. I highly recommend this unit, it's an excellent choice to upgrade from the normal home switch to something that is manufactured for small business with a reasonable price tag. I will be looking into their wireless routers to see where we can go from there.
Lifesaver . Simple to set up. Plug and go! Not managed, but even with QOS, I have much better performance than the 16-port Netgear I was replacing.
Routing your way to a Faster System . I recently purchased the Cisco SR2016T 16-Port Rackmount 10/100/100 Gigabit Switch to expand my Home network cappability. The Switch was a great add to my home network which currently includes a Linksys 3000 Router. Gigabit networking is the way to go if you want to stream video or audio. Setup was simple, plug and play. You do have to have cabling that will run at the higher transfer rates, but what a difference.
Smoking fast. . I purchased this switch because I ran 2 ethernet drops to the bedrooms, front room and family room while remodeling. With 16 ports I was able to move all ethernet cables (from drops to rooms, Internet gateway router, NAS and video receiver) to this switch. With this switch, copying 1Gb DVD VOB files from the NAS to my laptop took less than 50 seconds using jumbo frames.
Great 1000MB Switch for the price . What can I say? It works and it's at a great price. You can count on Cisco quality.
switch has been up since the first time i powered it on a year ago. No issues. . So i racked this guy up in my home "network closet" about a year ago. plugged it in.. plugged in roughly 10 devices..and i've had 0 issues. have never had to reboot it.. it just "works" Transfers speeds are true to the specs and i would definitely recommend to anyone.
Basic 24 port Switch - Works as advertised . This switch has replaced the linksys 10/100 basic switch. No frills switch, but this switch is quality built, and has Cisco components. If you do not need POE, managed capabilities, Qos, then this is a great option...

Cons Review
Does not pass multicast traffic . I purchased an SG 100D-08 and an SG 100-16 for use in a Development lab -- specifically working with M$ SCCM 2007 and Windows Deployment Services for WIM image (Windows 7) deployment.

The 100D-08 was plug and go and works fine for both unicast and multicast deployments.

I needed more capacity, so I wired up the SG 100-16. The client machines connect to the Deployment server, load the boot.wim, start to download the install.wim and then hangs up 2%. It never finishes, although it appears to be passing traffic like crazy! I put the 100D-08 back in place and it just works!

The link lights on this unit are constantly flashing (on ports where something is plugged in) -- almost like there is a broadcast storm or something. If I swap it out with a different unit, it operates "normal" without all the blinkin lights. Since the unit does not work for my intended application and/or is defective, it is being returned.

I have used and recommended Cisco equipment for years for myself personally and for my Enterprise clients. This is not the first Cisco product in recent months I have had problems with and had to return (first purchase/return through Amazon though). I hope this isn't a trend.
