Worked fine for a couple years . Worked fine for a couple years - a lot better than my previous (different brand) router - then a few days ago (May 2005), it just stopped working.
Now the Status and Print Err lights remain red (I never had a printer connected to it), and the Power and Print Act lights remain green, and any ports with computers connected just flash slowly. I tried holding in the reset button for a long time, and I even tried letting is sit completely unplugged for a few days, then resetting again, but it is still dead.
I have my router and cable modem connected to my UPS, and there were no power problems the day, so I don't think it was a power surge that caused it to die.
I see that one other person had this exact same problem. I would love to know what the problem is, so contact me if you have an idea (It's pretty simple to find my web site).
Fortunately, I already had another good router (3rd brand) to replace it with, so I'm still online. And I just bought an additional router (4th brand), at a very good sale price, to have as a backup.

Killer . After using a Linksys and then a D-Link, this is now my favorite SOHO router. I replaced a D-Link DI-604 and am very glad I did. The setup's easy. I powered everything down, removed my old router, plugged in the new router, and powered everything back up. The router configured itself, and I was connected just like that!The SS2604 includes a lot of smart features. I use the print server with my Epson Color Stylus 880 and have no problems (in fact, the printer port is what prompted me to buy the router). The Web administration is pretty simple. Basic users don't have to wade through the advanced stuff, but advanced users can get right to it, and you have a lot of control. A really nice touch is that the router uses DNS PC names (rather than IP addresses) within the setup software when setting a DMZ or opening specific ports ("virtual servers"). Therefore a power drop doesn't require a complete re-config. There's also a site log and a filtering function, which I have yet to use.Before you set up the Speedstream, DO download the firmware upgrade from speedstream.com. And make sure you have Acrobat installed. The only printed doc is a quickstart guide. Everything else is on CD in PDF format. I'd prefer a paper manual, and including a CAT5 cable or two would be nice. All in all, it's a great SOHO router, currently selling for about 1/2 the price of comparable products from Netgear, D-Link, and Linksys. If Siemens marketed better this box would sell bundles.

Has problem with windows update site . I bought this router based on price and it works pretty well. The set up was fairly easly once I got tech support on the line to tell me it had to be set up differently with my DSL modem (Westell) but you should know that Windows Update will not work with this router. It will freeze when it tries to scan your PC. Tech support tells you they know this and to wait for firmware update but no time table given.

Just want I was looking for . Have had the Speedstream ss2604 firewall/router for about 5 weeks. Have not had one problem with it. Found it to be easy to setup. I have a DSL connection with a PC running XP. Speed seemed to increase when I went from the DLS modem/XP PPPoE support to this fireall/router making the PPPoE connection. Use VPN to connect to my office, no problem there either. According to the Gibson Research site I am not visable to the internet. Price/performance hard to beat.
Good AMAZINGLY cheap router . I purchased this router because I wanted/needed a cheap NAT firewall router for my cable modem. This router has performed extremely well so far, with the exception of one firmware bug I've found (dealing with viewing the security log).The security on this product is great. The firewall doesn't let a thing through... many NAT firewall's echo UDP traffic. This one does not. It is possible to configure this router so that no one on the outside world knows that your IP address even exists :)I don't do any of the advanced things like other people posting here do, so I can't confirm or deny their complaints. That said, if you want a good NAT firewall router without spending a huge sum of money, give this one a look.
Good router for the money . The Siemens SS2604 is a great 4-port ethernet router for the money. Compared to other routers made my D-link, Linksys, and Netgear, this one is priced to sell at around $...less. It works great, despite its sparse set-up instructions. The set-up is internet based - requiring the user to enter a specific address into a web browser. This brings up a set-up wizard which is very basic and probably isn't very helpful for people who are new to setting up networks. Still, it's not hard to get the right set-up going (reading the included CD-ROM manual maybe advisable). In my case, I run some firewall software in addition to the router, so I had to adjust a few more things before I got this router to work. I play a MMORPG on one PC and surf the net on the other using this router. I've had no problems whatsoever. If you're looking for a basic router with a print server as well, the SS2604 is a good deal.
Simple basic hardware . The only problem I've seen with this product is in the learning curve, but that's to be expected from a real 1st-time home networking newbie. The installation was simple and flawless, once I realized I had a couple bad CAT-5 cables. After that, it was easy.I've read about problems with this device and IM services. I run ICQ with no problems, so I'm not sure what that's all about.I run ADSL with 768 down, and there hasn't been any bottleneck in my network speed. There may be a slight delay in responsiveness, although that might only be my imagination...it's not significant in any case, if it's true.There is a LOT of information out there about how to configure routers for specific gaming situations, and setting up this router doesn't seem any more complicated than most others, but it will take a little bit of studying to figure it all out. The manufacturer's web site is very helpful, but you'll have to gain some moderate understanding of networking. I'm still in the process of setting it up so that I can host certain games on my computer (NWN to be exact), but if you're not planning on something like that, you won't have to worry about it. Every basic operation that most people will need is seamless and automatic.All in all, I had a very good experience with this router, and the VERY inexpensive price tag made it an excellent deal.
PS2 Problems . This is a good cheap router, but if, like me, you purchased to be able to connect your PS2 to the world for online gaming, I would recommend another product. See, PS2 requires that certain packets of information be allowed through the firewall in order for the headset to function. Normally, you can just tell the router to allow these packets for the PS2, or you can use the DMZ host feature. However, changing this still did not allow the packets through. I talked to someone on the technical support team, and they said that they don't know what the problem is and that numerous people have had this problems. They said keep checking for a firmware update but they had no timetable for it's completion. So, if the DMZ host feature eliminates the firewall, why does the router still give me problems? The router does not apparently listen to how you set it up. Take that for what it's worth to you...
Cons Review
Cheap Router Cheap Results! . I bought this router so I can be on my computer and my PS2 online games. Some of the games can't get through Speedstream's firewall. DMZ didn't work, disable DoS didn't work, and Special Appications didn't work. So I called there 24 hour tech support...Got a recorded message. Tried Email, and it was sent back. Submit a question and you get answers that cannot be understood. ...
This router ... . though it is easy to install but it has problem with major online messenger programs. If you don't run those programs, it works fine but there might be some other hidden problems with the router. I just got rid of mine. Don't wanna waste too much time to debug the problem.
