great for large home networks or basic small businesses . I recently purchased this to replace an older 8 port SMC switch which I've had in my home for over 5 years. This unit has 16 ports of 10/100/1000 and an internal power supply (no wall wart). There is no fan in the device which means that it is completely silent (great for home). There is no configuration or management of the device so it is entirely plug and play.

good basic switch . Fast switch but runs very hot. Also lacks support for IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP).

Good bang for the buck . Bought this switch for a small shop network I administer and it's been great. No hiccups and steady workhorse of a switch.
It is unmanaged with minimum features but for a small shop what more do you really need? Just need speed, speed, speed for the ever growing larger files that are being generated by CAD, Financial and inventory applications. This does a great job. Recommend!

Great switch out of the box no configuration necessary . In the Summer of 2007, I did a job for a doctor's office where I installed network cabling and jacks, a switch, servers, desktops, printers, software, wireless access point router and laptops, etc. I selected this switch because it seemed like a good switch for a good price. Since that time, this switch has been running without a hitch - no problems. No configuration was necessary - I plugged it in and it just worked. Been working ever since and I am considering getting one for my house to upgrade an older 100 MB switch I still have on my home network.

A port in an ethernet storm. . Like the other reviewer, I bought this unit to replace a SMC 8 port switch. The 8 port switch had operated faultlessly. In fact, I moved it to another room and am using it there. But I needed more than 8 ports for the main switch. These units just work. Plug them in and forget them. I had a problem with a NAS unit that turned out to be an incompatible switch (not SMC); replacing the switch with a SMC solved the problem. You cannot go wrong with this 16 port switch.
very low price fit for purpose . It's a 16 port gigabit switch... and they're practically giving them away! The price per port is the main draw here - unmanaged gigabit switches are fairly common, and all basically the same.
I live in an apartment complex where there are 30+ wireless networks all fighting it out over the limited airwaves available. My wireless network is one of them, and performance can be really bad at times. I try to hardwire everything I can so that I don't have to worry about interference from my neighbors trying to operate on the same channel as me. I have a Windows Home Server, PS3, XBOX360, SiliconDust HD homerun, net-enabled receiver, Dune HD network player, and a couple of PC's connected to my network.
Backups to the server, downloads from the internet, endless PS3 firmware updates, file transfers between PCs, and streaming video from the WHS down to the Dune can all run simultaneously. With everything wired up to this switch, I have no problems with dropouts or lost connections. All the ports I've used work, but I haven't made a point of testing each one for function (I assume they're all fine).

Gig-e speeds on the cheap and quiet. . I've used everything from Netgear and Linksys...and never have I been happier than with the SMC series of Switches. With my Netgear switches, if I ever had to reset the router, I had to power cycle every switch in cascading order...ugh. These, you turn them on and forget they are there...haven't had to power cycle one.
Now, the 16 port doesn't have a fan. So, I like to use these in places where I want silence...like my desk/office or living room type situation. Because of this, they can run warm....so, do give adequate spacing in your rack or on the shelf. The 24 port has a built in fan, but the fan does generate noise....so, it keeps cooler, but is noisier...better for server closet type applications.

Cons Review
SMC EZ Switch failing ports . Shortly after installing this switch ports start failing. By now I have only half of them working. I called SMC Customer Service for no help. Don't buy it. You certainly have better choices.
