Media server allows remote access to content . I bought a PLA401Kit, a PLA470 4-port, and a DMA1100 for my home setup. Hooking up the PLA401 near my broadband router was a cinch. To test the system, I ran into the other room and plugged in the 2nd PLA401...five seconds later my ethernet connection was recognized...WOW!
I installed the DMA1100 media server into the media room. This took a little longer to connect because I had to configure Windows Media Server but after about one hour of configuration I was listening to my MP3 collection, watching my digital movies and running a digital photo slide-show on my 111" projection screen all from my home office computer upstairs. I am also streaming HiDef movies over my broadband through the powerlines in my house; the whole thing is cooler than I ever could have imagined. I do have a few complaints though:
1. The new 1100 DOES NOT require an additional ethernet connection box like the old 1000 did. The 1100 is online once it's plugged into the outlet. I bought an additional box that I did not need because the diagram ZyXel provided was from the older 1000 model; confusing.
2. The remote control should be backlit. It's buttons are small and hard to see; backlight would help.
3. The system recognizes photos by their digital tags instead of their file location. I now have to mass tag my entire photo collection (3500+ photos) with tags.
4.The system is sometimes slow to respond because it inventories your entire collection with every remote click. I wish it had some onboard memory and could build some inventory files that would speed up access.
I also bought the PLA470 for my media room downstairs. The media room is the farthest spot away from my wireless router and neither my netbook nor my ROKU box (streaming Netflix) could pick up any signal in the room. I hoped the ZyXel system could get me online. This system works so well it literally brought a grin to my face. I chose the PLA470 because of it's 4-port connection. I plan to wire lines for my families notebook connections (yes we're online while watching movies). This setup allows all of us to be online at once downstairs.
I cannot recommend this system enough. It's so easy to set-up and use and it runs faster than I could have imagined.

Love it...but at this price? . I have this and the PLA-401 powerline ethernet bridge and it's awesome. It streams my pictures, music, tv shows, movies and with ORB I even managed to stream shoutcast radio and get this...tvu streams to the TV downstairs.
This was an experiment and I managed to get this off newegg for $99 and the pla-401 for $60 and that was a nice deal.
It does what it is designed to do well, and it has a certain geek factor when you get into the codecs it supports and getting dvd's to stream etc. but once you get that figured out, it's great.

Man, it gets crowded sometimes around my little monitor. This nice looking box does justice in sharing and streaming all my videos and pics I have onto my big plasma TV so all of us don't have to hawl over my computer.

Not bad but outdated tech almost 4 stars worthy . I picked this unit up, brand-new about 6 months ago as a closeout 'elsewhere', for a 1/5th of the list price, yes 1/5th. Don't know where this current pricing comes from! As for the unit, it is relatively nice, slim, good connectivity but w/ busy lights. As an older unit, firmware upgrades are non-existent. It does not support mkv, vob and many other video packaging formats now common today but it is quite capable of playing most avi files(xVid & Divx) and connects well to its own (DiXim) host PC software. I also use TVersity which needed a bit of tweaking but provides on-the-fly file conversion so that helps with the format limitations. It also doesn't seem to play 1080 files but not sure if it is the I/P limitation. It simply states 'unsupported format'. I don't have a HW DLNA Media Server. Navigation controls during playback are very good but not great. Remote buttons are a bit small, creating mistakes. No slow-motion and favorites don't work either. Still for the price I paid I have enjoyed it immensely. I am using the powerline function with the internet adapter (PLA-400 included in my kit). This 'wired' connection works far better than expected and provides very smooth video performance. If it handled more native file types it would be awesome and get nearly 5 stars from me.
Quirks: when soft-powered off, the HDMI connection does not appear to go full 'off'. This prevents my HD monitor (Hanns-G 28", not an HDTV) from going into sleep mode. My monitor does play well with other HDMI sources. Since I have no remote for the screen, this is annoying. Not sure if it is all the ZyXel's fault but it seems that way.
