Easy Reliable User-Friendly I install networks in Dallas, TX and we have never found an easier more reliable system to use and install than 2Wire. All we had to do was plug it in, install the client software on any machine connected to the phoneline network and then type in a verification code and the settings for your dsl isp, then it was good to go, we have not recieved a single complaint from multiple customers of the homeportal unit being down for a single second. As a networking company we highly recommend it for home or even small business use.
Haven't had any problems I received the home portal from SBC as part of their home networking kit. It was easy to install and I haven't had any problems with it. The software that came with it lets me monitor all the computers in the network, reset encryption keys, and change firewall settings. A couple of days later, I tried to help some friends with their Linksys router and it was such a pain, making me relieved that I spent the extra money for the wireless router.
Slight Problem While we have many devices connected to phones and power lines in our house, guess which one has died twice in the last week due to lightning storms. Talking to a Sprint representative they confirmed that this thing is a fragile butterfly once the electron winds begin to blow.
Wired up I think it's great except it's too big and bulky.
Home HPNA Option (Over PhoneLine Mode) No Longer Supported Have used this DSL modem for several years, in the HPNA mode (internet access provided to home computers using your existing telephone wiring). Used to work well. Macintosh computers here. Have had to reset the unit occasionally, no biggie. Had to replace it once due to lightning storm-induced failure (yes, it's fragile to power surges). **** 2-Wire no longer updates the software, and it caps out at Mac OS X 10.3.9. Does not support 10.4 (Tiger) or higher, which means I can't update my Safari browser. This is now 2005-era software, and it increasingly can not handle common website features. 2Wire considers HPNA a dinosaur. Don't buy it if this is what you want to do -- at least if you're on the Macintosh platform. I don't know about Windows, but don't expect upgrades there either. I plan to keep the unit and switch over to wired ethernet or wireless mode, but am still weighing my options.
Residential Gateway Did not enjoy this at all. Would not work so we sold it at a Yard Sale.
