Buffalo Technology LinkTheater High-Definition Media Player LT-H90LAN (Black)
This review is from : Buffalo Technology LinkTheater High-Definition Media Player LT-H90LAN (Black)
Great Video Playback and File Format Support . I have owned my LinkTheater for about 18 months now, and am considering purchasing a second unit for another room. The video playback is fantastic. Streaming files from a Windows Home Server system or a Windows Vista PC over a 10/100 wired network, playback is smooth without any skipping or hiccups.
The LinkTheater supports an incredible variety of file types. My HD files are 720p M2TS containers with h.264 video at 55oo kbps and AC3 640k 6 channel audio. Playback is flawless.
In addition, with the latest firmware update, the LinkTheater supports ISO images of DVD discs. Loading an ISO presents you with the same experience as loading a disc into a physical DVD player. Menus are preserved and fully functional, titles, chapters, subtitles, special features, commentary, foreign audio - all work flawlessly.
Downloaded high definition Matroska MKV files play back perfectly on this unit as well.
Firmware updates happen automatically. When the unit is powered on, it checks online for an update, and applies it if one is available.
Playback from attached USB devices is smooth and simple as well.
The menus are simple and straight forward to navigate. However, media organization is the one drawback to this unit. If you have a large collection of media, I recommend organizing it into subfolders. Otherwise, the entire contents of a network share are simply displayed in alphabetical order. Playlists are not supported, but starting playback of a folder will result in sequential alphabetic playback of everything in the folder, making the LinkTheater easy to use for presentations.
Overall, this is a fantastic product, and I plan to add a second unit to my system for another room.

Cons Review
Downgraded to 1 star. . UPDATE** 7-5-09
I have had this for a few months now and it has let me down in every way. Crashes, freezes, funny noises duing playback and start up. Its is VERY slow going thru the many different menue options. The remote control response is quirky and the lack of support is maddening.
I have been trying to contact Buffalo "support" for months and get NO RESPONSE. I even found a phone number for them. I ask for customer service, get put on hold for half an hour, then disconnected, EVERY TIME!
Do NOT buy this doorstop! The Dlink, although not five star, blows this thing away.
Older Review:
I have a Dlink unit (DSM510) that worked resonably well. But had limited functionality especialy in the music department. I have a huge music librabry stored on a NAS, the Dlink had trouble listing all the songs, it would only find the first 100 songs or so in a folder, and playback was screwy. It would play 3 or 4 songs and then crap out.
I bought the Buffalo unit in hopes of better functionality. I was wrong. The UI is pretty primitive and navigating is sketchy. You can navigate to the video folder and it will show music... with some fiddling around, like exiting all the way out, then back to the same folder and magicaly, it shows your videos. The video playback is good. It has never lagged or skipped during playback. However, the volume control on it does nothing. It has crashed a few times when I click play on a video.
Music playback is decent. If you have your music separated into different folders, like Rock, Pop, etc, you can open one of those folders and play back all the music in that folder. There is however no suffle feature, which is a real downer unless you want to listen to all your songs in a row in alphibetical order. It will not recognize playlists created my Windows media player or iTunes either.
Like a mentioned before, the UI (user interface) is primitive. The Grey and white pinstiped background makes the white text difficult to read. I have not found a way to change the color of either.
I can't say i would really recommend this. The cons are greater than the pros in my book. It does playback your music and movies, and pictures, but thats it. The quirks, lack of support, lack of shuffle feature and playlist compatibility are a real downer.
