This review is from : GS716T-200 - ProSafe® 16-port Gigabit Smart Switch
A solid well-performing switch . I recently purchased this switch due to the lack of reliable consumer-grade unmanaged 16-port Gigabit switches. It was also listed on the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ compatibility list, which was the second reason I purchased this model.

This model replaced a Netgear GS116, which itself worked fine until it decided to suddenly stop transmitting packets and required unplugging and replugging the power cord. The GS116 replaced a GS108 which worked flawlessly (and still does) for 3 years. I've been expanding my network since our house's network is more like a small business than a residence.

The buyer of this switch should note that there are several versions of the GS716T floating about, a v1, v2, and 200 model exist - and the v1 and v2 are being phased out for the 200 series according to the Netgear website. This model is the latest 200-series - though I cannot really tell the difference between the v2 and 200 model, and both use the same firmware image. It (v2 and 200) has many more features and is more up to date than the v1 model and the nicest feature for me is that this model has only one fan which is a lot more quiet than the two fans I heard on the v1 model. The v1 sounded like a hair dryer set on low speed, this model puts out a whisper and is no louder than a whirring fan of a quiet desktop PC.

The web interface is informative and easy to use. It works best on IE and the shipped discovery tool software is Windows-only. The switch can still be managed via Firefox or Safari once its IP address is known. I have had little need to configure the more advanced functions of the switch (flood control, RADIUS, QoS, and the myriad of security settings), I really don't need them at this point.
GS716T-200 - ProSafe® 16-port Gigabit Smart Switch Reviews
Great Product . great managed switch for the SOHO. love the stats and the management interface. network is really running faster than before with 5 daisy chained 5 port GIG-E switches.

super quiet unlike my Trendnet 16 port switch which sounds like a jet engine.

GS716T-200 - ProSafe® 16-port Gigabit Smart Switch Opinions
Good Smart Switch . This is a switch that lets you track issues on the network, manage ports and provides many of the features that a fully managed switch provides. So far it's worked very well for us. The fan isn't quiet but it's not as loud as some other switches we've installed. A great buy for the cost.
Great Smart Switch! . (1) Why I bought it: I purchased the GS716T to use mostly as an unmanaged gigabit switch, but I was looking for a few extra options such as QoS, VLAN, port security, etc. This switch is used on my home network with video streaming, VOIP, and web browsing.
(2) Cost: At under $238, it's a fair price for the quality and features. Other vendors on the internet have this switch for approximately the same price.
(3) Ease of Use: It was very easy to set up as an unmanaged switch (plug and play). Once you start moving into the web interface and configuring advanced features, it becomes complicated quickly. Luckily there seems to be a decent knowledge base for configuring Netgear switches on the internet. Do a Google search for what you are trying to accomplish, and someone has probably got it wired. I guess the Netgear switches all have very similar interfaces. To me the web interface is logically laid out, however, I have limited network management experience.
(4) Quality: This is a well built switch. The fan is quiet but moves plenty of air through it, keeping the switch relatively cool.
(5) Features: Lots and lots. But, forgive my ignorance; my inexperience with network equipment may have colored my glasses rosy.
(6) Overall: An excellent purchase; I would recommend the GS716T to anyone looking for a switch with plenty of options for a small but managed home network.

Cons Review
Sent me the GS716T v2 not the -200 . Dissapointed after researching this that I was sent the switch that is being phased out. As best I can tell the main difference is the -200 is green and therefore will save power and theoretically need to use the fan less so cut down on the noise (have not confirmed this). Took a vacation day to hook it up and now need to return it.
This device HAS A FAN in DIRECT CONTRADICTION TO NETGEAR's WEBSITE . Aaaargh.

I Bought this switch at frys, in commercial-box-packaging (e.g. a brown cardboard box with the part number on it), based on the information about it on netgear's website.

This was going to go in my home lan/experimental network, which is predominantly in my bedroom.

Netgear's website EXPLICITLY states: "Fan-less design for quiet operation"

I get home, open the box, and it has a little, tiny, *high-pitched* fan. What the heck? Now I have to drive to the nearest Fry's which is 45 minutes away form my house AGAIN, just to exchange the switch for a competing d-link, which might actually have the features it claims.
