Powerful little thing. . I am in Afghanistan, and we have (crappy) wi-fi here. Living in "cans", and the signal cannot get in. So, to get on the internet you have to go sit outside. Who enjoys that? So, I looked around, found this to be the best choice and made my purchase. Tested it out in the US on leave, and it stayed connected to my wi-fi driving away from my apartment, made it to the turn, that would be through the entire building as my apartment was on the opposite end. That is good. Took it back to country, with an extension for the antenna, which, according to your needs may be very important. Works great, have it on the roof, full bars and connection. It is amazing that that little tiny cube is able to run an N network, but it runs very well. This guy was a lifesaver and I recommend it for anyone that wants to connect to wifi from a fair distance.
HiRO 802.11n Wireless USB Network Adapter with High-Gain OMNI Direction 5dBi External Antenna (H50194) Reviews
Worth the money . Note: I have the 2dBi antenna version, not the 5dBi version... However, I can only imagine that the 5dBi version just has a stronger signal than the 2dBi.

This is a great adapter!!!! It's half the price of "name brand" products, but works twice as well.
I previously had a Linksys 54g usb adapter. I was constantly dropping my connection, and sometimes it wouldn't even connect. I only have a 802.11g router, but this n adapter is worth the money for the same price as a good g adapter since it will give me better range and will "future proof" my computer for when I update to wireless n.

I'm two floors above the router and all the way in the farthest corner of the house. I consistently have 4-5 bars of signal, have a signal strength of 85-99%, and have a download speed of 24Mbps.

If you are having problems with your wireless range and connection, BUY THIS before spending the money to upgrade your router.

(Working in Windows 7 64 bit)

great bang for the buck . Installed this on a three year old PC running XP SP3. It was easy to set up and works great. Fast speeds, great signal, seems to find twice as many networks as any laptop I've had. Love that it has a magnetic base so I could just slap it onto the side of my tower.

Definitely worth the purchase.
Great Link and Great Signal Strength . This product has greatly improved the link quality (100%) and the signal strength (80-95%) of our internet connection, which is through a wireless router on a different floor. Bought a second one after noticing the difference in response time between this adapter and our old one.

Also, the magnetic base gives you some options for antenna placement. We have a metal filing cabinet which keeps the antenna from shifting or being knocked over by passing children who have challenges with spatial awareness.

Enjoy this product and your (always up and running) internet connection!

Cons Review
Didn't work well . I live in remote Costa Rica and needed something like this to get better reception on my laptop. It seemed like a great idea, so I had it shipped here, which took a long time and cost more than the antenna itself!. I was able to install it, and although it picked up the Wifi signal and had a nice interface, it was no better than the internal antenna in my Sony Vaio laptop. Actually testing with and without proved that the HIRO was WORSE than the internal antenna. So it was a total waste of my time and money. I ordered the extension cable too and that didn't work AT ALL and prevented the HIRO from working. Unfortunately it costs me more to send it back than I can get refunded so it's a total loss. Beware of any crap made in China, it gets worse every year.
Save your money . I bought this for my daughter who is deployed to Qatar so we could communicate with her over the internet. The wireless signal is poor on the complex she is housed in. We thought this was going to increase signal strength, but it really didn't provide much improvement at all. Frankly, we were both very disappointed.
Seems no better than internal laptop antenna . My husband recently had to spend an extended time in a campground that had wifi quite a way from their campsites. Being in a rather desolate location, and alone, he was really hoping to be able to connect and watch movies. This seemed like the perfect solution, and someone else in the campground had something similar that attached to her laptop that worked well. This one, however, didn't improve the signal at all. When I tried it on my own laptop, trying to figure out why it wasn't working, I wasn't able to pick up any more signal WITH it than I was without it. Go figure. I was so looking forward to it working, but, it didn't. Maybe in a place where there are more networks available, you would get better signals? I don't know that, but it wasn't the solution for our problem. Just wish I had found the misplaced box in time to return it!
