If you need 8 ports and every penny counts... . Let me start by saying this is another quality product from D-Link. I mounted it to the wall behind my wife's desk so her laptop and network printer can both share the network instead of the laptop having to go over wireless when it's docked.
The main things I like about this switch are:
1) It's a switch - not a hub. That means it will run in full duplex mode and each connected device doesn't have to deal with as much network overhead. A switch will typically give more than double the performance than a hub in the same situation.
2) I ran some performance tests through this switch and verified that it really is capable of sustaining 100Mb/s in each direction.
3) This switch looks great - it has a clean design with the lights in front and the ports/power plug in the back.
4) It comes with a couple of screws and wall anchors to mount it to the wall (which I did).
There are some downsides that may impact some people:
1) Even though this is made to mount to the wall, it hangs with the D-Link logo upside down and all the ports facing down. This seems backwards and I think D-Link should have at least made it possible for it to hang in either orientation.
2) This probably won't impact many users of a product like this, but you should be aware that it is NOT stackable.
3) By now we should all be used to this; but, this switch does NOT come with a network cable.
Overall, I'd have to say this is one of those devices that works great - but I just don't think it will appeal to many people. The main reason I say that is because it is only a 10/100 switch in a world where 1Gb is very cheaply available (even from the same manufacturer). I suspect most people who need 8 ports are probably willing to spend just a few more bucks to pick up a 1Gb switch; and people who can live with 5 ports will find 1Gb switches costing less than the DES-1008E.

Small But Mighty . I just happened to pick this up at my local Office Depot store. There was a returned open box item that somehow was returned by a unsatisfied customer. It got for for $14.13 due to a 10% discount.
Anyhow, I am using this switch to add additional ports to my Trendnet router which was purchased a year and a half ago from Amazon. This unit is really compact and sleek 3"x 4.5" x 3/4" almost like a scaled down Linksys router. Setup and hookup was easy and painless and quite frankly I am truly amazed with the speed both upload and download. You really can't tell the difference whether your ethernet cable is plugged into the main router or this switch. Really outstanding. Only problem is because the unit is quite small that the five inputs are quite close together so that your RJ45 plugs may feel quite snug if the surrounding jackets or are left on. Otherwise, great little product. I should have bought the 8 port version which sold for $5 more. Right now, it sits directly on top of the routers with a pair of clothes pins for additional ventilation until I can make a small wooden stand for it. Looks and runs really cool. Please give it your best consideration.

D-Link DES-1005E 5-Port 10/100 Desktop Switch Opinions
Suits my purpose . I'll start by saying that I got this with a very simple thing in mind: sharing peripherals without a security risk. We already have many of the computers and peripherals in our house set up on a wireless network via a modem and hub. I often need to print documents securely (e.g. patient records) and do not want any risk attendant with sending confidential information over a wireless network. granted it is a small risk, but a risk nonetheless, and one I would rather not take. That said, neither my computer nor other peripherals are wired into the household network (wired actually being used awkwardly, inaccurately here as our network is wireless). The D-link switch offers the option of going wired or wireless. Being 8 port, I could likely put all of us & our equipment on if I chose to, but the entire point of this for me is that I do not want to.
Really, my primary use is to share my childrens' printer, which is better than the one attached to my computer. I have not yet set it up to share an external drive I recently bought, but likely will set that up as well, as being a ridiculously large (for our purposes anyway) terrabyte drive, this switch will enable sharing without having to physically move the drive around.
The switch is inexpensive, easy to set up and has a small foot print. It is also nicer looking than most, and relatively inexpensive (very much so, compared to what they cost just a few years ago).
This is capable of a good deal more than the simple things I wanted it for. Most people will likely use it to set up a home network. I am using it for a shadow version of same; a smaller, discrete network which will keep confidential documents "off the air" and not connected to the other machines or modem.
Since I am not transferring huge files, speed is not a huge issue. This provides a nice, easy economical solution, from a company which has been doing networking for a long long time and is among the best consumer brands in this area. A simple solution which spares my having to replace my printer, move peripherals, or risk sending confidential information over a modem just to move it from one room to the next.

Works good looks good. . I bought this to install at a customer's site. The set up is fast and easy. I know this brand works well. It's much better looking than the box shaped switches. This was a good value at Amazon.
Sweet . Compact, nice looking, works perfectly, I paid the extra ten bucks to have this aesthetically looking unit then the other ugly blue ones I saw here for less. It is very lightweight so you may have issues with keeping flat on the ground.
Great way to simply share files in a home office or small work place . I hooked this in my office at home as a way for me to access files from 3 computers at the same time. Using this, I am able access documents and pictures from all 3 CPU's, data stored on my external terabyte drive and access my printer all from one location.
It's a simple design that works great for small networking needs. If you only need to network 2 computers, it's possible that using a basic crossover cable running between the two CPU's may work for you just as well. But considering the price of this unit is pretty comparable to a good quality cross-over cable, you might as well get a switch like this and enjoy the added benefits of more ports should you find a use for them at a later time.

Sleek and Easy. . Yes, it's plastic and the design matches with D-Link's router. If the back of your router is already full and you need to hook up 8 more devices such as a network printer, games, computers, via ethernet, then this is what you need.
It's just plug it in and you're done. Fiddling with network settings and such can be intimidating or confusing, but if you know how to plug a cable in, then that's it.

Great if you need 8 ports...but can't afford GB. . This is a very basic switch from D-Link. It is designed for 10/100 with 8 ports built in for those who need to the extra space to connect printers, laptops, etc... The product does what it says it can do, and very well. Unfortunately, I think the market will leave this basic switch behind due to the lack of GB support. Again, it does what it says it should do, and it works fine. But, if you are a heavy game player, watch video over your network, or backup a lot of local files to an external hard drive, I would suggest spending a few extra bucks to get the GB version.
Good for want it does. . This is an 8 port CAT 5 cable hub. I have two of these. The first one was all metal enclosed and this one is all plastic. Obviously, if you drop it, it will break. Otherwise, this is a very simple device. you plug in your first cable from the source and then you can send/or receive data from 7 other devices. It has 8 ports and a power supply. Simple and it works. The description states it's a desktop switch, but you could easily use this as a network junction box.
Cons Review
Worked for a few months then stopped working . Too many issue with D-Link products so time to switch brands. Bought this at Fry's, it worked for a few months and then failed. Lights blink continuously but no internet connection at all. Called tech support, on the phone for 45 minutes going through all the things I already did and they said the product was bad and I was out of luck, out of warranty.
