It works pain and simple . I needed to replace an expensive FAX modem that failed after several years. This was remarkably affordable, offered a simple USB connection, and seemed to fill the bill. Amazon delivered it quickly (as is typical) and I opened the package. Just a mini-CD with drivers, the modem, and a USB cable... what was advertised. No FAX software supplied (which is OK as I already had mine). Took about 20 seconds to attach the USB (which also powers the modem) and phone line. Another minute to install the drivers. And.. about 30 seconds to have my FAX software autodetect the modem and self-configure (I use Mighty-Fax). Wallah... done in under 5 minutes...
Did it work? You-betcha. Another couple of minutes to send it a FAX from an external Samsung... worked fine. Another minute to send a FAX to the Samsun... no problem. Looking good, I thought!
And.. then about two hours later, the first unexpected FAX came in. Worked perfectly. I'm delighted withe cost, the ease of installation, and the performance. One happy customer here.

Cons Review
Legacy Product . The Diamond Smart data/fax modem will only work with a legacy system. Windows 7 64bit and 32bit are not supported because there are no drivers. A much better external fax modem by encore electronics is plug-n-play. The encore USB modem supports Windows 7 for sending and receiving a fax. I do not recommend the Diamond Smart modem for a modern operating system. Only Windows 98, ME, 2000, Vista and XP (32bit) systems are supported.
Useless . This was a waste of money. I have tried it on three different computers and have not been able to get around a blocked modem message. The cable fits in so loosely that if you breath too hard the contact if lost and you have to start over.
And I was really looking forward to using this as I am in a rural area with no hopes of affordable broad band in the near future.
