Works with Legacy Impact Printers . I am using this print server with Panasonic KX-P2023 and KX-P1123 impact printers for hammering out multi-part pin feed invoices and checks.
It works flawlessly on a Windows network. I have not had the same good fortune with some other compact print servers (Ethernet to parallel).
The unit itself is quite stylish and compact. Installation was fast and simple. The instructions (in only a few pages of a huge 15 or more language volume) were clear and to the point.
There are three negative features that lost this little print server a star in my rating. Two of the negatives are common to all mini-print servers so it's probably a bit harsh for me to downgrade this otherwise excellent product.
First of all is that the print server is about two inches long with a male centronics connector at the end. If your printer has a connection in the rear the interface can get in the way of feedng forms. This is not unique to Level One because the other small servers have the same shape, tend to be larger, and present the same problem.
Second, the external power supply has a European plug. An adapter is provided for US use, but the whole assembly is unusually bulky. The mains pins are exceptionally long in order to fit into recessed round European mains sockets. As a result, the power supply and US adapter assembly is quite tall and top heavy.
Third, why on earth doesn't someone make a print server with a 25 pin Sub-D printer connection? There are Sub-D to Centronics cables on the market with right or left hand Centronics connectors. Although bulky, those cables tuck neatly out of the way and allow the print server to be put out of the way. I ended up purchasing a female Centronics to 25 pin Sub-D adapter (I don't think Amazon carries them) just so I could tuck the print server out of the way.
The Level One FPS-1031 appears to be an excellent product that works flawlessly with my legacy impact printers, that easily installs on a network, and that might require a bit more space above your power strip than you'd expect.
I did email Level One technical support to ask if my printers were supported. Their answer was a prompt but terse link to their compatibility chart. I'd give Level One points for promptly responding, but would remain neutral about their bedside manner or grasp of English.
